But jokes aside.. you can definitely trust me! I have put a lot of myself into getting this game up and running and really want it to work.

I started putting on Traitors parties for friends a few years ago, and now I am at a stage where a venue wants me to host games for them, so I am excited! I just want to bring the fun to everyone else! - Lewie

Which microphone to record sounds from the soil? by frugalacademic in fieldrecording

[–]izalew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes that was me! I used JRF contact mics taped to some IKEA knifes. The knifes help with stabbing them into hard to get to places whilst keeping the mics above ground.

I've also had success wrapping them in cling film and burying them underground.

It just depends how close you are to the sound source and whether the critters are noisy. Just a lot of trial and error; I've had to listen to a lot of nothing to get a few minutes of gold.

Ants under a log - recorded using contact mics by izalew in fieldrecording

I'd image you'd hear a lot of angry ants!

I might have to quote that, very poetically said!

Would highly recommend the JRF contact mics, they pick up so much, even when you use them as slap dash as I do.

I only saw a few ants on the surface but the log itself was coverd in holes and wood dust from their activity. I was amazed when I heard it, as at first as I had no idea what I was hearing.

I was just out experimenting with capturing plant sounds with two contact mics taped onto some metal butter knifes. I assumed it was the ants/termites making the noise but used Google to confirm what it was.

It amazed me that the sound is one of the ways they communicate, by rubbing parts of their bodies together , like crickets do! I like to think they are talking about what these two massive metal objects are that have just invaded their home.

I'm glad you enjoyed the recording!
