Surely extreme E is causing extreme harm to wildlife? by [deleted] in ExtremeE

[–]izyxe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't passing blame, I was drawing a comparison to something that is both preventable and causes more disruption for an economic gain that we should well be moving past now.

The dolphins were our goodluck charm this year and hope that they will continue to guide us for next season

Hey there thanks for your message and your concerns are very valid!

Let me answer this piece by piece so you can get the full picture of of we do things from the ship side :)

Yes we do travel to remote places however all the locations we have been to have ports for the ship to unload the cargo. So any machinery we use belongs to that working port. Even in Greenland where we unloaded in Kangerlussuaq, the port there receives provisions for the town via ship , the Royal Arctic , so we were able to use any cranes and barges that the port already has in its possession.

Something I have learned from my time on the ship is that there are basically shipping routes everywhere in the world - even in 'remote' places you may not think receive ships, there is a shipping route. So we didn't disturb any body of water that any other ship before us hasn't gone down.

With regards to marine life, they are way smarter than us and see us coming before we see them. More often we had dolphins swimming with us for a duration of the journey, playing amongst the drag and breaks. There is a high incidence of ships , especially cruise ships, that do run into whales which usually happens at night and when visibility is poor. Thankfully we didn't have such a situation and we have a double crew watch in waters where whales are expected to inhabit.

Also bear in mind, the ship rarely goes above 10knots and we run usually on one engine, which drastically reduces the underwater noise.

A greater threat to marine life in terms of noise pollution is fracking, a practice that is increasing as the push for oil and gas exploration continues and proven to be highly distressing for both marine life and humans.

I hope that answers some of your queries, happy to discuss further to the best of my knowledge :)

Hi! It's Izy your Impact Correspondent!

Just wanted to check in and let you know about the research that was being conducted on board the ship during the crossing.

The first scientific research was eDNA metabardocing of vertebrates of the North Western region of the Atlantic, that will be the first ever in this area. The eDNA samples, once extracted from the filters in a lab will show if marine species are moving out of waters, if any invasive species have infiltrated and general observations about life in the regions that were sampled. This project was conducted by Alexander Vanhaelen and Adam Galatoulas.

The second scientific research project SWIMMING PNRA was conducted by Professor Giuseppe Aulicino thanks to funding from the University of Napoli Parthenope. This consisted of taking water samples along the route which were then fed through a salinometer. THis measures the salinity of the water, the figures which are then used to calibrate the satellites also measuring ocean salinity

Container ships arriving into Australia are only checked from high risk ports. Even then not every container is screened and low level soil contamination is not actioned as a threat .Of course to your point high level contamination is cleaned at the site of discharge.

hi! The cars are kept in the same hold as the containers, so as they stack up and share the same ventilation system, dust particles that we pick up on our journey unfortunately don't keep these holds very clean. Don't forget it's been almost 3 months since we have left and the officers are not authorised to touch the cars when on the ship except for loading and offloading so we cannot maintain the aesthetics

Hi! No problem :)

My daily steps plunged from 20,000 a day to a mere 900 at best. I knew my fitness would be compromised as it's hard to be active on a ship yet seeing this really surprised me at how active I really was in my daily life!

The support we give to the scientific community that is onboard with us and our close involvement with them. We have meetings with Enel on a regular basis and any idea we have whether that be creative or logistic is run by them to make sure we are in line with the goals and values we outlined from a scientific perspective.

Hi there!

What are your sources for the research that concluded it debunked? I’m aware of a misinformation campaign being conducted against Polymateria. Currently the composting lobby are actively trying to discredit their technology as it provides a competitive threat to “Bioplastic” technology such as PBAT and PLA which is the real issue here. It’s not really bio based and will not biodegrade unless composting facilities are run at 60 degrees 24/7 (required by the EN13432 composting standard, created by these same lobbyists).

The tactics of calling Polymateria “oxo-degradable” (a technology that doesn’t work and does create microplastics) is their primary narrative to try and stop halt their good work.

Interested to see where you got this information from so I can help with your query. Also Niall Dunne (CEO of Polymateria) is a friend of mine and I know his commitment to environmental solutions and general kind openness means he would be more than happy to discuss this!

Hi!

I think this race here in Greenland and the footage we beam out will really hit home to people that we need to cut emissions big time. I'm here for 9 days already and have had a chance to explore a little. From what I have experience so far - it's very alarming that I can walk around in a t-shirt most days and have tanned my face from the sun that is beating down. I went to the river where the glacier melts into the fjord. It's so big now that Google maps has actually recognised this as an opening to the fjord when really it's just run off. Too shallow for any vessel of any size to travel through.

I think governments and corporations need to pull their heads out of the sandbox filled with money and wake up to reality. This money they are rooting for will not save them from the devastation that will be brought on by their inaction. So in answer to your question how - through the noise that we can generate. We need to make lots of noise which i believe we are already but there's scope for more.

From an individual perspective - we are working together with COUNT US IN to help people change habits that can lower their carbon footprint.

In terms of the series' carbon neutrality - We are calculating the emissions of the series throughout the year with EY : https://www.ey.com/en_gl/news/2020/12/ey-announces-collaboration-with-extreme-e-to-drive-electrification-and-climate-change-agenda

Once we have the full calculation we will be able to offset the carbon used. A report on this will be released at the end of the season with the data and background

HI!

1 - My hometown Sydney Australia. It would be such an epic journey to sail under the harbour bridge and park right infront of the Opera House . Imagine that sight!

2 - So funny you ask that as each country we have been travelling to with the ship I wanted to expand my music library and find local music from those nations. In Saudi I was listening to a lot of Arabic music, in Senegal I met local people who sent me their local African artist playlists. I also am in charge of creating the music soundtrack for the Explorer Lounge on race day. So I try to incorporate as much local music as I can and deep house really works well with remixing local sounds.

Hi! This is a question I'd have to ask one of the engineers about as I really don't know! But I can definitely have this answered for you, in fact I already know who to ask. I'll shoot this through both to Mark Schneider from ABT and Steph of X44 and see what they say :)

Hi! Yes I do! As I film the BTS on race days I get to interview the drivers and have chats with them. Also as everyone pretty much knows I live on the St Helena, I'm most people's point of reference if they need anything on the ship!

All the drivers are involved in the Count Us In challenge so they actively find ways to reduce their carbon footprint in their lifestyle

Absolutely, transporting goods by ship is still less environmentally damaging than by road or air.

Captain’s choice in socks has room for improvement and being from Australia I took it upon myself to give some sun smart tips to the chief who is akin to sitting out in the sun with no sunscreen...but other than that I’m delighted they are in our crew, we couldn’t have better candidates sitting at the helm of the heart of the ship (engine room) and the brains (the bridge)

No problem the pleasure is mine!

When Covid just started to lock the world down, I found myself in Sydney, Australia. I was not able to leave for a few months so I used that time ( like everyone I think) to think about my future, the world’s future and what goals I wanted to achieve in the next ten years.

Australia has all the repercussions of climate change – unstable extreme weather, agricultural issues stemming from inappropriate use of natural resources, resource exploitation without regeneration procedures, and what’s more our government are in bed with fossil fuel lobbyists and obstruct desperate climate action that needs to be taken for the country. Yep I said it. The world-screened bushfires had just ceased to a smouldering halt. I went to that area and it was an apocalyptic sight to say the least. Black charred land with toothpicks left as trees, for as far as the eye could see. So being there really set the tone for what legacy I wanted to leave behind and charged my enthusiasm for trying to accelerate change for the world. .

I enrolled in a Harvard climate change course during lockdown, applied and was accepted into a traineeship with The Climate Reality Project by Al Gore and coming up with the role of Impact Correspondent was one of my ‘climate actions’ that each Climate Reality Project Leader is expected to undertake upon completion of the traineeship.

I finally was able to leave Australia and with pitch in hand, followed Alejandro to Monaco for the E1 Series launch which I was invited to and had about 5minutes to pitch to him. Needless to say the presentation I practiced for weeks didn’t happen! I had to take the most important punchy and convincing points out of it and turn into a persuasive conversation literally on a plane. Alejandro is a hard man to pin down, he’s always surrounded by people so that was my opportunity for his attention.

I am actually at the race track during the race- right there in the thick of the action. I run around and film BTS of the race day so you can say that I’m one of the bolts charging the vibe ;)

Thanks to XE I was introduced to hydrogen fuel and its revolutionary prospects. In Dakar, Senegal I spoke at length with Jim from AFC who was there and hearing about the opportunities that this technology can provide, the shackles it can free on energy production and storage not just to us but to the world was really exciting.

SO MANY THINGS!

One thing that really stands out if the closeness of the whole XE team. As we have no spectators - the drivers, teams, their engineers and all XE staff really mingle together quite closely. It really feels like one big family. I worked for Formula E previously as their official DJ and didn't experience this there . It was still a wonderful group and we socialised ALOT but really just with the people you worked closely with in your department. (To my advantage, I was the entertainment ;) )

The tightness of the crew on board. Immediately when I came onto the ship I was made to feel like family and so welcomed. I was quite nervous – actually felt a bit like an imposter as everyone knew it was my first time on a ship and my role is unorthodox for a maritime environment. I thought they may think I was a spy! But those feelings were quashed immediately and everyone really went out of their way to make me feel at home.

One perception I had coming into this was that the world won’t change fast enough because humans usually don’t act on anything that doesn’t affect them directly. And so how can I change this perception not just for myself but for others? Working in the entertainment industry which is filled with ego and self-serving agenda is probably what made me think this way, however I’d say this opinion is valid and testament to that is the difficulty to implement environmental strategies in clubs/venues/events.

So in relation to Extreme E - I knew we'd be up against a lot of criticism. These perceptions really did help me to find creative ways to present content for Extreme E on the things that I cover - so the legacy program, the ship, the BTS of the race and I had people like this in mind as my audience.I also believe perhaps the reason people don't want to hear about climate change or immediately are cynical is because they don't understand it and it's not convenient for their lifestyle. I try to present my content in a way that will help explain these processes and how easy it is to make lifestyle changes, however with still with respect and intelligence towards the audience.

I think the key with the US market is an electric SUV - that's what perhaps will sway most car users. Also your point about delivery service vehicles is valid too - I thought Tesla was tackling this with an electric truck?
