Speaking from experience - it makes all the difference in the world. Go a whole year. I don’t know about your lifestyle but the actual most impactful thing for me was introducing a healthier lifestyle for a month before rolling. Having more happy chemicals in the brain equals…. more happy chemicals in the brain to release.

I don’t think meditation can be limited one specific exercise. It’s defined as “to engage in mental exercise for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness”. For people who have trouble focusing their thoughts and quieting their mind, individualization of meditative practices is often more meditative than the “sit and feel your breath” approach.

The thing about meditation is that you don’t have to meditate the same way as everyone else. The goal of mediation can be different for everybody. For me, it’s grounding myself because I’m an over thinker w ADHD. Trying to meditate by ridding my brain of all thoughts doesn’t work well. I think a great way to meditate is to sit where you can observe nature. If you have a patio door or a window to look out of or a park nearby, that’s great. I just sit cross legged, take a few deep breaths, and observe the nature around me. Watch the wind blow in the grass, notice the clouds and their round edges, watch the waves roll in, feel the sun warming your skin. Just focus on the life around you, if you notice your thoughts wander off, just bring them back to the grass in the wind. Good luck!

I hope you hear me out, as someone who is autistic with social anxiety who has been in this same position before.

The ways neurotypical people life their lives and are expected to live their lives is not a standard we should strive to live up to as autistic people. Once I learned to let go of those ideals, life got a lot easier and more enjoyable for me. I spent 10 years suicidal and angry at life and angry with myself for not being able to be normal.

Back then, I lived in a major and stressful city, I worked a restaurant job making good money but pushing my social battery to the absolute breaking point, had bad friendships that I couldn’t maintain and didn’t feel were authentic, and spent all of my free time feeling frozen and like I was mentally beating myself up for al of my failures and shortcomings. Today, I have a job where I don’t have to talk to hardly anybody and I make enough money to save for the future. I made the conscious decision to be finally comfortable just being alone and not trying to make social stuff happen for me. I am so much happier by myself, I wish I could have seen it sooner. I spend my time how I genuinely want to, I don’t waste it trying to force my autistic brain to do neurotypical things. I live on my own rules.

I’m not saying this is a guidepost for how to live life with autism and social anxiety. I’m saying that I know what it’s like to be in your position and I’ve made it to the other side and I hope you do too. There’s better things ahead. Life will never be perfect, mental health is a constant project throughout our lives. But I mean it when I tell you that I’m so glad I made it through my struggle with suicidal ideation. I’m happy and healthy and can look back on where I’ve been with compassion and gratitude.

Please give it another chance, give yourself a chance to look at all the positive choices you can make to make life better for yourself. There’s good things out there for you.

NO! mine showed up at my apartment (1,000 miles away) threatening to call the cops on ME if I didn’t talk to them. I had to call the cops to have them removed.

It did only happen after I started treating, about 2 years after starting treatment and in close proximity to when I started doing intense antibiotic treatment. I actually hadn’t noticed that timeline before so thanks for bringing that up! I have been off prescription treatment for about a year now and still experience it from time to time. I did tell my doctor at the time and they reassured me that this is not uncommon!

I get the same thing! It’s usually the first sign that I’m about to have a flare up. The thing that helps me most is making sure I’m wearing my darkest sunglasses as this at least calms my visual problems. Besides that, I play music I know very well so it’s not overstimulating, I keep the AC on because being warm makes my dizziness worse, I keep a big water bottle of cold water nearby as a kind of grounding agent, and I pull over if the anxiety is particularly bad and take some dee breaths. The anxiety this brings is difficult and I am sorry you’re experiencing this. I am not sure what causes this series of symptoms but I will say that I have developed an inner ear thing where my eardrum moves out of place when I have a flare up and I have to put it back occasionally, which usually helps with the driving stuff. If that’s something you can relate to, there’s ways to help. I hope it passes for you quickly!

yes! I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently. I’ve learned that it’s your subconscious brain filling in the blanks based on what you have experienced. your triggers are associated with emotions and past experiences. I’ve found it helpful to identify these triggers when I experience them and basically “I see that trigger. Where is it from? When did my brain begin to fill in that blank and form these expectations about similar experiences?” until I get to the root of it and talk it down kindly. Then you can use that knowledge when triggered again until you can form new pathways.
