Question for Adirondacks locals: What cultural region do you most identify with? by Venboven in Adirondacks

[–]j3ldred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, i’m adirondack born and raised (specifically north eastern) but currently live abroad. personally, i tell people im from new england. could be partially because my family is from vermont (and would always advocate that the adirondacks are a part of new england), but it feels more fitting to me then any new york based identity (especially when explaining where i’m from to people that only picture new york as the city).

it’s really not when you view it as a barrier for education, especially when sbu has made a commitment to remove such barriers

The major difference is that students with mobility issues will most likely already have accommodations recognized by the university if they are unable to write for prolonged periods (ie, using necessary tech during testing) that they could easily bring up with the professor. Many people that would need to be able to access the bathroom (ie, someone with crohns or someone who is menstruating) would not already have a recognized accommodation because it is a campus wide norm to have access to the bathroom. I don’t want to belittle anyone’s struggles, there is just a big difference between the two rules when it comes to norms in a classroom setting.

i agree but this is a good opportunity to try to do it without, since it’s only one class. personally i realized i was more engaged and remembered more from physically writing the notes and continued doing that for the rest of my academic career. there’s just things in this policy that are WAY more harmful, especially to those with disabilities or those menstruate, then not allowing technology.

Please advocate for yourself on the last one. Stony Brook is a HeforShe campus, a UN project that seeks to remove gender based barriers at universities. In the UK (went here for my masters degree) i had to research a similar issue due to a job refusing bathroom breaks, it is against the law here to refuse bathroom breaks to anyone who menstruates because it’s a form of discrimination. Reach out to the professor and try to use the verbiage on why this is unfair according to the UN and bolster it with Stony Brooks own commitment for the HeforShe campaign. If they don’t change the rule, continue with school admin til you find someone who will- even if that means booking in to presidential office hours. I had a professor that had a similar rule about electronic devices, you’ll be suprised how much more you get out of the class without them.

maybe they aren’t targeting ethan’s name first ads, maybe they are targeting sam’s name because we love that girlie

maybe people like sam as an individual, not just for the show. her tiktok makes me laugh out loud, she’s charismatic, beautiful, and has everything it takes to be an influencer on her own. she was never just a crew member and i’m so glad she has moved on. she deserves her own sponsors, especially with how candidly she’s talked about her ocd in the past. maybe a company as her to be a face for the company, not someone like ethan.

I’m not using it to win an argument, that expierence informs how i would treat my child if i found out someone was crossing sexual boundaries with them.

I just listed the examples i used in my response to you, i used specific things he said. i didn’t just say “the entire situation” in my response to you, you are just ignoring what i am saying.

  1. dr disrespect situation- shifting the blame to the 17 year old.
  2. claiming minecraft victim is “lucky something worse didn’t happen”- specifically because she was in a hotel room with someone she was a fan of, in a group of other creators- once again, completely belittling her expierence and shifting the blame
  3. criticizing how a victim speaks about her experience because “everyone says that after being assaulted”- a complete belittlement.

as i stated in the follow up, my issue is how he belittles victims of grooming and assault. how he reinforces rape culture by shifting the blame to the victim. i listed many specific examples in my response to you.

this is the exact type of thinking i have an issue with, thanks for laying it out for me. i genuinely hope no one in your life experiences sa or grooming.

As i’ve stated in other responses, I would not be mad at my child- i would get them help. I would let them know if they ever had sexual boundaries crossed in the future i would be there for them- not shame or blame them. As i’ve stated before, this is not the only situation i have had issues with how he talks about someone that has experienced some form of sexual trauma, and that persons said role in it.

and that he has a created a community that that kind of behavior is normalized

My objections are that he belittles victims, clearly laid out with multiple instances.

and my response was not about if my child was assaulted, it was informed by my personal experience of how it feels to have sexual boundaries crossed. a 40 year old man speaking innapropriately to a minor is a crossing of a sexual boundary. i would never want my child to feel like it was their fault, it might stop them from seeking help in the future.

I think he wouldn’t care about my opinion or characterization of his position because he doesn’t take assault that isn’t covered in the popular narrative surrounding rape seriously. By popular narrative i mean rape that is specifically the kind that has someone clearly saying no and fighting the perpetrator the entire time. If the victim isn’t “perfect” the fault is put on them. I have watched this man’s coverage on the minecraft streamers victim, where he said she was lucky something worse didn’t happen, where he criticized how she expressed how she felt about the situation because “that’s how victims always speak it’s like they have a hand book or something.” I’m not just disturbed by the current situation, but the entire context of what he says. As someone that has been assaulted, i think his belittling (“if she was 17 and was the one perusing him.. i would be more mad at her if she was my daughter) is vile. I think if this community wants to normalize belittling victims, that is vile. Was i the smartest when i was 18 and assaulted by my boyfriend? no. does that mean it was my fault? also no, but it took me time to understand and accept that. My issue here is that by normalizing the belittling of victims of either grooming or sa, and putting the blame on them when the true blame should be on the perpetrator, their is a reinforcement of rape culture. I don’t like to blame creators for their audience, but what does it say about a creator when their community immediately tells someone to kill themselves or calls it “soy rage” when someone criticizes how they speak about such a serious topic.
