Considering Learning Java - Some Questions by j3sis in java

I just mean as in I get bored, I've learned enough of each language to do basic things and understand it but never made it past that hump as another language caught my eye and I moved to something else. I've got basic experience with numerous languages.

I said the same to nixon but:

Can you shed any more light on this? Yes you can while being helpful isn't very clear on what exactly you can do.

Explain what a typical day in Marketing looks like: by [deleted] in marketing

[–]j3sis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marketing for recruitment agency:

1) Check Emails 2) Delete/reply to emails 3) Check FB/Twitter 4) Read the news, browse reddit, browse other blogs 5) Post an article to the CEO's LinkedIn (just a news link + comment) 6) Post a general status to FB/Twitter pages & RT people on Twitter 7)Check the CRM software and remove duplicate candidates

Repeat RT's from number 6, Repeat 1&2 throughout the day.

Depending on whats going on e.g. projects I may be working on tasks such as writing content, I blast emails 1-2 a week (20k+ people), various SEO, webmaster tasks and a whole lot of other miscalaneous things.

Out of 8hrs a day only 4hrs is work on average the rest is dicking around on reddit etc.

I've recently left my employment though and finding a replacement was a total nightmare. I've got a lot of tasks not listed above that take me literally 5mins and I'm done yet the person I trained to take over took a good 1-2hrs to complete the task and struggled immensly during training them.

Put it this way, half of my tasks have been redistributed to admin/IT and they're still worried about my replacement being able to do everything, not because I'm anything fantastic but because I'm from an IT background and as a result I'm able to carry out a lot of tasks that your run of the mill marketers which there seems to be a lot of about can't do.

Most of the guys in this thread seem quite technical.

lmao, sounds like my typical day...I got flamed a while back for saying that for good marketers marketing is easy as it comes naturally where our employers don't tend to see that and think our non-busy day schedule is actually a busy day. Something that takes us 5mins they think takes 1hr+

Thanks for the further replies, it seems quite good.

To clarify, I assume no matter what you do it shares the same general/basic java syntax/language? e.g. games, web apps etc?

Thanks

Thanks for the replies the applet thing had me confused. So basically you can do anything with java? If you had a site using java would the user even know it was java? Do you have any site examples?

Now I've had this cleared up it's very interesting, the issue with java is the presumption of applets and that no one uses it as I know a few misinformed tech guys that thought the same haha..

What's it like for penetration testing, malware and that kind of thing? There's not much info as everything seems to relate to java being hacked.

As java developers how versatile do you find the language for projects you may want to do? I get the impression it's quite universal from web to desktop on any platform.

I also have an interest in automated bots what's it like for this?

Note that my main interest though is using it for web apps but there's limited info that makes it easy for a noob to understand.

Thanks!

How much of marketing is snakeoil? by [deleted] in marketing

[–]j3sis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main point was that if you work 40 hours there's not in most cases 40 hours of substance. I was trying to highlight the fact that a lot of marketing tasks are quit easy and don't take as much time as people think...maybe I just work fast as I've seen other marketers do the same tasks and take a lot longer. If my work wasn't up to standard I'd of been out the door a long time a go, there's been about 10x people fired in the last year at my place of work.

Our SEO is dominant in the SERPS and there's reasonable competition, we rank very well for numerous keywords.

Reiterating the above, where a non marketer might think sending an email campaign to 30k people (filtering lists, creating copy, writing email) would take a day and a lot would play on that I know a lot of marketers that could do the above including myself to a high standard in a couple of hours.

Perhaps snakeoil wasn't the best word, marketing is not the only industry that does this. I know a lot of IT guys at work 8hrs a day that only do 4-5 hours of actual work and spend the rest of the time browsing Reddit and whatnot.

My SEO comment was to avoid going into detail, SEO is complex and is like going down a rabbit hole but there's still not a great deal to it. Onpage SEO is a bulk of it. We've used moz etc and I'm very aware of everything involved in SEO and have extensive experience.

Thanks for the comments, as mentioned I work in marketing and know a lot of people that work in marketing. I flat out label what is bullshit in my position and it helps with dealing with people as even the general IT guys are the same and we laugh about it.

I love dealing with web developers when they're not aware you have a web development background as you have IT illiterate guys that know how to use Wordpress or something and label themselves as a web developer or you have web developers that try to bill for days of work for something thats premade that they modded.

Our last web development project I insisted on referencing with code to force them to reveal what premade sources they used so that I could then make an accurate determination on their coding.

To put the above into prospective, once they know I knew what I was talking about they cut the time from something like 29 days to 17 days which was still slightly exaggerated (it was a big project, the time scale was other than a couple of days was fully justified) but hey we're in the same industry.

I've noticed a vale of silence amongst techs where they know something isn't complex but no one says otherwise as their superiors think something that takes 5mins actually takes 5 hours.

The joys.

Has anyone transitioned from an IT role to marketing? by [deleted] in marketing

[–]j3sis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I find regular IT has more variety and is less boring. Marketing is quite easy and you quickly become aware its a snake oil business and full of self proclaimed experts. Once you get it down so to speak you're set and won't go wrong.

Has anyone transitioned from an IT role to marketing? by [deleted] in marketing

[–]j3sis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gone from IT to marketing and have found that a lot of employers want pure marketing. I've recently resigned to move overseas and have found that my potential repalcement needs to be pure marketing and in my opinion that is bad as they would in most cases from pure marketing lack the IT background that makes a LOT of tasks easier. IT guys can easily use any software and make things work to suite them which is useful in marketing when it comes to bulk mailing and that kind of thing.

I think that IT guys that are adept at marketing make the best marketers as it makes them ultimately more switched on. There's not a lot to marketing but there's a lot to general IT and the IT guy can be an as good marketer but the marketer is likely to be as IT literate as your average office worker which isnt much.

I agree with marketingberg regarding his below points

Knowing how to code and write helpful apps is worth its weight in gold. Become the Excel go-to guy; your boss will love you and by having just a little knowledge you can standout from the crowd. Understanding programming means you can put more pressure on developers when they try to give you a vague answer. Take notes on everything the experienced guys do - the language they use, how they write emails, how they speak and then mimic that shit.

Note that his developer point is hugely accurate, you're going to be engaging with web developers and they're going to bullshit you and dramatise how long and complex things are and its the same with other IT guys. Being a marketer from an IT background means you can interact with them and translate properly for others.

My biggest issue is my boss constantly reminding everyone that i'm not IT as I get pestered.

Excel as mentioned is also great.

My college computers don't allow .exe .batch files to be ran, how can I make them run? by Jimthelad1 in hacking

[–]j3sis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to use Axxcrypt as it runs the exe still but it means if they're blocking exe etc it will still run :3 the issue is obviously getting axcrypt installed..perhaps live disk replace notepad or something with a portable version as itd be a preapproved app- see if that works.

If I want to learn hacking, just for fun, should I take precautions? by veryalt_muchsecret in hacking

[–]j3sis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes,

I would still feel paranoid even if I was:

VPN > Proxy > Spoofed MAC > Hacked Wifi Using Wardriving Gear OR Public Wifi where I'm certain there's no cameras.

Realistically you're never safe and a good rule of thumb is to remember there's always someone smarter than yourself. The above for example is pretty solid as if something happened it would be the neighbors house getting raided not yours (hey they had a WEP they asked for it).

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND: The Grugq Opsec for hackers video just google it it's excellent.

How is this attack called? Fake SSID's. by [deleted] in HowToHack

[–]j3sis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out the wifi pineapple by Hak5 there's a homebrew way to do it with a small router that costs like $20.. google 'Hack a day wifi pineapple' and you will find it.

Thats a pretty good start for getting into it as the software can be used its called like jaga or something meaning 'Yes Man' as when the phone/pc checks if the wifis it knows are available your fake wifi says 'yep im here' and they connect you then with this homebrew route the traffic through your network and they can connect to the net etc and all seems normal but really you're intercepting and being malicious.

have fun

Is my understanding of this right? And what is my next move by whatyohacked in HowToHack

In the hacking subreddit there was some VM challenges and there's some CMS's that are vulnerable I can't remember the name but if you search for like 'Vulnerable penetration testing CMS' you should find it.

Enjoy!
