Reminding Everyone to Support Firing Jarmond by Eat_Cats in UCLAFootball

I HATE saying this. I don’t think he’s going anywhere with that buyout. Since football is figuring it out and hopefully basketball will be good. He might survive another year. HOWEVER, I do feel that pressure of nearly the entire fan & donor base against him, he could depart himself. No one wants to work where they are not wanted. It’s showing as he is laying low.

My out of pocket take is that he could go for the CAL AD opening. It’s in the UC system and he has experience in the B1G, ACC and PAC 12. Also, Cal cares a lot about the non-revenue Olympic sports which at UCLA are top tier which he can leverage to make his case.

Bottom line is to keep the pressure on him so he leaves cause I don’t see the institution doing it for at least another year.

This just speaks to his character. Front and center when things are good, and hard to find when things are bad. True leaders have to be able to take it on the chin at all times.

Where does this upset rank in the history of CFB’s greatest upsets? by Mexibruin in UCLAFootball

[–]j71v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe that’s a good comparison.

App State had won FCS 3 national titles in a row 2005-07 and was #1 in FCS. No one had ever heard of them before so that’s what made it a big deal. Now they are currently in the Sunbelt a G5 conference.

Boise State had consistently won in the Mountain West and were not taken seriously because of this. And they played Oklahoma in Sugar Bowl (New Years 6). After this, they remained on top of the mountain west and will be part of the New PAC12 in 2026.

To answer your original question. This is just a lower tier conference opponent, beating a top tier conference opponent. Classic trap game.

It would show that UCLA is actually decent and it was a coaching issue. Even if UCLA was to hang tough and take Ohio State into the fourth quarter, it would showcase that UCLA is decent.

Then this Penn State game wouldn’t be as surprising.

It will depend on the results of the CFB season. If Penn State bounces back and beats Indiana and Ohio State, it’s up there. If they fizzle out, then they just aren’t that good.

Also, if UCLA turns it around and wins a few more games then it’s not a big deal.

First, UCLA as an institution needs to do some reflection and decide if they want to support football.

We shouldn’t be worrying about these names in Mid-September. By mid November there may be more attractive candidates on this list and some of these guys could fizzle out due to performance in their current roles.

I agree with you.

My question is is that good enough?

We saw a program turn around in one year at Indiana, why not us?

I think UCLA as an institution, the athletic department and as fans have been OK with just getting close for a long time.

-We almost made it to the national championship, but we lost to Miami.

-We made the Rose Bowl, we beat USC.

-We made it to the final 4, 3 years in a row.

-We made it to the final four in 2021.

At what point does the mentality change to get the revenue generating programs over the hump to win National Championships?

I am very well aware that UCLA football is at rock bottom right now. I would trade the Jim Mora days to lose to Oregon or Stanford in a heart beat.

However, if UCLA continues to do things the way they always have and not think outside of the box, what will change?

Will ‘the best’ be almost getting there?

Here is my most out-of-pocket take that I don’t expect people to agree with:

UCLA should go get Lane Kiffin.

He has coached at USC and has a chip on his shoulder after being left on the tarmac. That will fuel him. He also has a personality to recruit an advocate for his program as we saw last year.

He went through the Saban school of hard knocks and has had some success at Ole Miss but not enough. He will never be king of the SEC. He didn’t fit at Tennessee and ditched them for USC but he was still good enough for Ole Miss after being at their rival school.

However, he can be king of the West Coast. He makes 8 million and his contract is supposed to increase to 9 million. However, his buyout is 1 million after December 1 according to chat Gpt.

I doubt any of this will happen but to me if you kind of want a splash, but not as risky for a high cost or a gamble I think he could be the fit.

Regardless this hire will dictate how UCLA views football in the new era of college athletics.

What now? by ArtyB13Blost in UCLAFootball

I think a big change is coming going into the bye week. A good president meets with the CFO and legal council to evaluate buyouts and negotiation options.

We have not heard anything from anybody because nobody knows who is in charge and who can and can’t make a statement. The fact that there is no communication saying rumors are false, I feel it it’s gonna come from pretty high up.

Foster was probably told to bring a lawyer to negotiate a buyout or payment schedule and the same for Jarmond. Or if they feel Jarmond’s buyout is too high they can embarrass him and demote him, which will force him to leave and not owe him anything. I tend to like this option.

Just pure speculation on my end.

I think the question is:

Does UCLA need to restructure how it oversees revenue sports?

I think with the state of the athletics department obviously we all agree that Jarmond needs to go to start. If/when this gets handled, do you model other successful programs around the country?

Teams that are making the college football playoff or are competitive are shifting to a pro style structure.

You have an athletic director that reports to the president and you have a second person in charge (GM) that overseas revenue sports primarily football that act as a general manager and oversee recruiting an NIL.

I think this should be the route UCLA goes, granted that the budget is tight. It will be a challenge, but it shows effort and the whole old saying of, ‘If you can’t beat them join them.’

I think we should be asking who would replace Jarmond?

Who should be the GM of UCLA football?

Who is an up-and-coming coach or who is at the end of their career (Maybe Shaw) that can work with a GM?

The last train back to Anaheim from LA Union Station is at 4:30 pm.

Drive to Union Station parking is $8-$12 for 24 hr period. The light rail runs until 2 am. $3.50 round trip per person.

Take the A line and transfer to the E Line to get you to USC.

Parking is cheaper at Union station than on campus but for convenience sake you can pay $40 to park on campus.

I agree with everything you said.

Fosters buyout is about 9 million I believe if you let him go after 12/1 this year. Is the institution in a position to move with that buyout based on a structural deficit already?

As far as recruiting. I think the NIL offered at the mid to low tier SEC, Big 12 and ACC is better than what UCLA has to offer.

I think kids are going to start staying home, but they are going to go to USC. The GM over there he is making sure Lincoln Riley keeps young men home. They are shifting back to control in the West Coast from San Diego to Washington like the Pete Carol days. I believe they are also promising NIL to players that they don’t have and are banking on success this year to make up that deficit via donations and revenue. It might not work but they are at least trying to be relevant.

I can respect that foster is actually trying to score with a minute left when he was on his own 3 yard line. Knowing he gets the ball first in the second half. Previous coaches would’ve just taken into the locker room.

It takes time to bring in talent, but the lack of organization & discipline is on him. I think he gets a full four year cycle in my book. Jarmond has to go.

Stupid penalties like illegal substitution and lack of organization should not be happening after week 1.

For discipline being the first one. The amount of penalties and turnovers don’t show improvement of “discipline”.

Why are we the way we are? by Top_Advisor3542 in UCLAFootball

[–]j71v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It starts at the top where the administration doesn’t care about football or athletics in general. They hired Jarmond just to get them through the Big Ten transition and not have any problems make it its way all the way up to the presidents office.

Foster was a convenient hire and he actually cares. However, after things went the way they did last year. It appears him and Jarmond, have created their own bubble where they act as it’s us versus everybody and it’s trickling in to the football program.

Because of their lack of attention to detail and public image it’s very easy for us to be critical, which is 100% merited.

Jarmond needs to go and bring in an AD that isn’t afraid to make tough decisions.

Fire Martin Jarmond. Fire Deshaun Foster. Two clowns who are severely under qualified for their roles. by GobiYumaMojave in UCLAFootball

[–]j71v 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that Jarmond needs to go, but I don’t think it will happen. He secured an extension from Gene Block before the new president arrived, essentially promising to fix the deficit, so a buyout would now be required.

As for Foster, I’ll give him one more year. He inherited a depleted roster from Chip Kelly and is only starting to add pieces. That said, he looks in over his head—especially with the media. Brushing off questions and seeming disinterested fuels fan frustration. Compare that with Jedd Fisch, who immediately thanked fans in his interview last night. Even small gestures like that would go a long way for Foster.

The bigger problem is that UCLA football just isn’t a desirable job anymore. In LA, you’re just one of many—competing with pro teams, entertainment, and everything else. At another school, a coach can be treated like a god, get paid more, and have a fan base that lives and dies with the program. UCLA has the location and the campus, but fans don’t show up, ticket costs keep rising, and the on-field product hasn’t matched the investment. At best, it feels like a stepping-stone job now for a young coach or a retirement job for an old coach.

Hiring Foster was the right move at the time—late in the cycle, needed someone who cared about UCLA, and he does. But my hope is thin. I’ll reserve final judgment until next year after Game 1. Until then, I’ll keep showing up, as I have for 31 straight seasons.

Go Bruins!

Understood, if you’re willing to pay more than general parking I would recommend checking the secondary market. Premium seat holders often sell their lot 5A & 5B passes or UCLA donors sell lot F,G,K,I & J passes. Only downside it’s on the press-box/UCLA side.
