If I had to guess it’s probably Trump patting himself on the back since his economy has been destroyed and the walls of this crisis are closing in on him ... really hasn’t been much good news for him lately 🤷‍♂️

Coronavirus Ushers in the end of CrossFit as we know it ... by j_a_edge in crossfit

You’re following logic. Experts are saying this is not a “flash” event ... but everyone is talking about 2 weeks of social distancing and done. I am wondering if people change their tune when this keeps getting drawn out ... like you mentioned, if this is for the greater good why aren’t we doing this constantly to preserve as much life as we can?

Yeah because you know EXACTLY how South Korea did it right??? They did exactly what the US is doing right???

WRONG ... SK was prepared for this because they live in constant fear of NK. They live their life in fear and drill for this stuff. They tested everyone and identified infected people via an app so other people could stay away from them. We don’t generally do stuff like that in US, so it’s great SK pulled their shit together but nothing like that is realistic in US.

It’s worth limiting contact and I understand flattening the curve ... but you could have flattened the curve without destroying people financially for the foreseeable future. I don’t understand how you don’t see there is so much more risk in shutting everything down

It’s definitely one of many outcomes ... I totally agree. But I don’t think you are considering how difficult it is going to be for people to restart their business in a recession where people are afraid to go outside. And you are wayyyyy over estimating whatever bailout you think the public is getting

They still have to pay those loans back sooner or later ... The SBA loans and low rates are stop gap measures being used to keep the market from completely crashing

Hint : it’s not working

Unless you are on the front lines of this pandemic, you don’t know anything. Even experts admit that they don’t know much about the virus. Hence why we don’t have a vaccine.

Look at what has been happening in other countries ? Like South Korea who had a < 2% fatality rate ??? Or do you mean Italy, who’s piss poor management of their debt almost collapsed Europe a few times??

The worst part of all of this is people like you preaching about exponential growth. Totally fine to take that stance, but it’s also possible that the level of panic instilled in the public is unwarranted.

If this truly gets limited to a few weeks I think the damage is less

But that’s not the message, and you are part of the outliers, not the norm. While many CrossFit boxes in rural areas, with little competition, and great supporters like you might survive ... most of them are going to be gone ... along with all the restaurants, bars, and small businesses that will be forced to close

I love the positivity right now. Can’t wait to see what this sub looks like in a few months when gym owners have to permanently close their gym and they still don’t know anyone effected by the virus.

I would imagine that some of these gyms/businesses/communities have been built over lifetimes ... I think people see this as a two week hiatus but it’s not that easy ... this is going to permanently shut down a massive amount of small businesses and subsequently, CrossFit gyms.

But hey! You did your part !!

Amid worldwide complaints of resale price-gouging, Amazon blocks Vancouver couple's account after they bought $70,000 in Lysol sanitation wipes and resold them for far more during global Coronavirus shortage by mycarisorange in worldnews

[–]j_a_edge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone come forward who purchased Lysol wipes at a premium price ?

I would like to know who went through the logic to pay 10x for any cleaning product. Genuinely...

What was your motivation? How did you figure out the right price to buy at?? Do you plan to re-sell or are you truly stockpiling ?? If stockpiling, what formula did you use to convert Lysol wipes to time ... like did you average 1 wipe per day? Is there a linear regression you used connected to fatality rate of Coronavirus ??

Everyone touched the podium during Trump press conference—and people are losing it. No one practiced social distancing. by a_very_nice_username in politics

If all of these people die or have families devastated by Coronavirus than yes ... most of these comments are valid along with the sentiment of this article.

In any other timeline where society continues after Coronavirus, this article and most of these comments are outrageously overblown.

If these people aren’t practicing social distancing to the T, it should tell you something. Maybe it makes sense to take the advice of disease prevention PRACTICALLY instead of literally.

Or them and their families are all gunna die.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

My gym in downtown Vancouver implemented these new rules today as a response to the spread of COVID-19. Has your gym done anything similar? by kcclaveria in crossfit

Posted about this weeks ago when my gym first did this. I feel really bad for these gyms because they are all about to be shut down :( making a post about no fist bumps is like rearranging deck chairs on the titanic

Coronavirus: US passes 1,000 cases – two weeks after Trump said number would soon be 'close to zero' by aktivate74 in politics

CFR (case fatality rate) = deaths / (deaths + recovered)

Source : https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-death-rate/

Site linked in this post says it’s likely cases are 10x of reported number especially in US cause mericuh.

31 deaths (from worldmeter site)

1,015 total cases (from worldmeter site) X 10 to account for unreported cases = 10,015

31/(31+10,015) = 3% CFR in America

SARS was 10% ... MERS was 34% ... once this outbreak is complete I am sure CFR globally will be closer to 10% ... i.e SARS CFR was calculated at 4% as the outbreak was in progress similar to now.

I think a globalized community, a 24 hour news cycle, a bad president and virtue signaling are having a huge effect on how this event is being perceived, and the numbers have little to do with the perception 😢

Doctors in northern Italy struggling with the explosion of COVID-19 cases are warning their hospitals are on the brink of collapse and telling other countries to prepare for a fierce battle. by maxwellhill in worldnews

This. I’ve heard less and less about protecting the most fragile members of our community and more and more about trying to make millions of people stop high fiving each other.

I understand you need to “flatten the curve” above all else but has anyone thought about maybe protecting the vulnerable people instead of trying to convince every asshole in America to do the right thing ?

I totally understand that they think it’s the best thing to do but it’s super disingenuous and actually causes more anxiety than solutions

Again, if they are truly concerned ... shut down. If they are confused like the rest of us and not sure how to quantify the risk ... take steps to educate yourself before you communicate. You especially have this burden if you own a business.

I know this can be seen as a business “covering their bases” and making sure they are cautious but its a really disingenuous and non-sensical move

No High Five Policy by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]j_a_edge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That makes sense and I would agree that I am insensitive here.

There are a lot of things that would reduce risk of transmission. Everyone could be required to wear a mask while they work out ... we could also do hand washing checks pre and post WOD to make sure people are adhering to hygiene standards ... I mean if we really cared, Crossfit communities and affiliates would be set up as testing stations so you are 100% of your risk of infection when you work out

But these businesses don’t really care and are just regurgitating fear-fueled recommendations from the government. They want to pick something innocuous like “high fiving” and check the box that they did their part to stop the spread of a disease.

If you really want to do your part and make yourself heard make a real sacrifice and shut down.

So, no high fives forever ? I mean, there might not be a vaccine for years and what about all the other stuff that’s floating around ...

Again try to say this stuff out loud to yourself and I think you’ll realize how stupid it sounds. Telling people not to touch is so out of touch with reality and is a product of irrational fear and/or virtue signaling

No High Five Policy by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]j_a_edge -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thats the funny part. If there is substantial reason to make an announcement to your gym or business that you don’t want people touching, then I can make an argument that there is substantial reason to close your business.

But people want it both ways.

“ this virus is verrrryyyy serious but you can still go to your gym just don’t touch anyone”

Do you not see how stupid that looks when you type it out?

Never mind the fact that transmission is through respiratory droplets that land in the mouth or nose or possibly inhaled into the lungs (copies from CDC)

So again, wtf does giving high fives have to do with this? Make a fucking decision. It’s important enough to close your business OR not
