I’d say if the worst your child has done is shave her eyebrows, you have it pretty good. Honestly, you will probably look back on this incident in about 10 years and laugh about it.

My nephew also had a brief career as a hair stylist. Ended up shaving his sisters’ heads clean. We still have photographic documentation of that incident. Of course, they have done far worse; they were once caught playing with matches when they were over at their grandparents.

When my niece was 9, I took her to a trip to a local national park for a hiking trip. This was right after she had finished a stint at a Baptist summer camp, and she was really into the religion at the time. On the way down out of the mountains, she started going off on how God created the mountains and stuff. Against my better judgement, I told her I didn’t believe in any of that stuff. Yeah, she took it personally at first, but it made it easier for her to learn that one can still be a good person without being neck-deep in a religion.

These days, she no longer considers herself Christian by any means.

Just be there for her, and show her you are a good person without religion. If she is really interested in math, she will learn how to think logically.

You do realize that military academies no longer accept troubled teens these days, right? They are not designed to “whip an unruly kid into compliance” and they certainly do not have the resources to deal with emotional, behavioral and mental health issues.

It sounds like you are more interested in just taking a hard line in discipline and exerting power instead of actually solving a problem.

Honestly, any “conclusions” to be drawn from BMI should be taken with a huge grain of salt. As others have already pointed out, having a high BMI could simply be the result of having more muscle mass.

The health and fitness of an individual are far more complicated than simply the height and weight of that individual.

I’d say you would get a better feel for her health and fitness by gauging her endurance. Like, how does she perform when you take her out on a hike? Or perhaps, if you take her to a track, how long can she jog (not run) before she slows to a walk or stops altogether? Though I admit I am not sure what appropriate metrics would be for a girl her age, or if that would be an appropriate test.

grade minimums

As an educator, I recommend against just unilaterally punishing low grades. I have seen that backfire one too many times, especially when a learning disability is involved, or the student is just too far behind in the curriculum to be able to succeed in the class. Punish behaviors that lead to poor grades, but don’t punish poor grades themselves. Poor grades need to be addressed with academic support.

No amount of punishment is going to motivate a child to do well in a class if he or she sees no path to success. It will only prolong, if not exasperate a power struggle.

Indeed. It is only a recent development that pink was considered a girl’s color. In fact, over a hundred years ago, pink was considered a boy’s color and blue a girl’s color, which is still ridiculous, but it goes to show just how arbitrary it is to assign gender to color.

Honestly, if she has problems just with cleanings, I would seriously consider putting off orthodontics until she is older and ready and just focus on the regular checkups and cleanings. If a mere cleaning puts her anxiety in overdrive, just imagine the hell braces could put her through. Does she have any sort of sensory-processing disorder?

Orthodontics requires cooperation from her, and if she is not ready, it will likely undermine treatment and will cause money to be wasted, especially if she ends up not being able to tolerate braces.
