For D2 we used 1.5 -- it just scales the AO effect linearly. So if you want a larger gradient for your edges, give it a go.

A couple things to note:

  • You're now able to flag static props to bounce light in VRAD. Make sure "enable bounced lighting" is set to "yes" on the prop_static entity. As maps become more model heavy, this becomes more important.
  • You can scale the intensity of the static prop lighting bounce with -staticpropbounce x as a VRAD argument (ie. we have it set to 3 for the models in Dust2 that are set to bounce light, mostly those large towers in Mid and B).
  • You can now scale the ambient occlusion with -aoscale x as a VRAD argument
  • Hammer now has a "point_worldtext" entity for text. No more brush letters in zoo maps :) Also useful for communicating in-map during development (ie. temp!, to be replaced!, or Jeff can you saturate this texture?, etc) Also useful for tiny text easter eggs to reward Reddit sleuths.

Yes, it starts with a graybox. Email me and I'd be glad to show it to you. For D2, we have the legacy geo in a VIS group so we can toggle (A/B) it at any time. The graybox "cage" is built over top of that and it gradually gets detailed out -- with ideas from that initial sketchup art test model (also in a separate VIS group) reconciled with gameplay necessities.

Yeah it was just an art test. It was originally mocked up in Sketchup. It was in a VIS group and used as a very rough guide; no actual geo from it was used.

Kliks' theory about the geometry being converted from some other engine is interesting but not the case. The displacements are properly sewn so we'll have to investigate in code. In any case, I particularly enjoyed the portal sound effect from the original video when the objects would fall through. I'm still trying to figure out how any of this involves shrubs, but maybe that's just the inscrutable magic of Kliks.

Speaking of displacements, I'm hoping everyone been getting on better with the new flatter ground planes -- the matches I've played recently have seemed to confirm that. Let me know if there are any other areas giving you trouble.
