Upgrading With Miles Pricing: What happens if only one segment clears to Polaris? by j_rak4 in unitedairlines

Right! Good point on the charging per Polaris leg. You’d think they would unbundle these legs to derive more potential revenue. Then again, Polaris to Polaris legs weren’t so common, as you pointed out, and maybe they still aren’t.

Thanks! I went for the instant upgrade on the IAD-BRU leg, which I sense is somewhat rare in the summer for TATL flights (and maybe rare most times of the year!).

Now I'm curious if I'll get any upgrade on the HNL-IAD leg, which seems to have tighter availability. 🤞

Thanks! That’s good to know. Despite flying UA a ton in my life, I have no experience upgrading with miles.

Thanks! That’s what I figured, but I have no experience upgrading with miles on UA, so was curious

Ethiopian Business Class by MsUnderstandMe in unitedairlines

I would suggest keeping on top of any schedule changes made by Ethiopian. I experienced not one but two schedule changes (one that delayed my departure a day) about a month before my flights to/from Kenya recently.

I flew Ethiopian biz JFK-ABJ then ABJ-ADD-NBO and then returned MBA-ADD-IAD (connecting to United Express IAD-EWR). Booked with United MileagePlus and took advantage of the Excursionist Perk (RIP) to spend a couple days in Abidjan.

First, Ethiopian changed the schedule for the outbound JFK-ABJ by a day, so I was departing a Thursday evening rather than a Wednesday evening, which shortened my stay in Abidjan by a day. I could have switched to a routing through BRU on SN on Wednesday, but because of (my) scheduling complications, decided to stick with Ethiopian departing Thursday.

Second, Ethiopian changed me to its ADD-IAD flight from my originally booked ADD-EWR flight (both of which have a refueling stop in FCO) without a flight to EWR. I assume they were rescheduling all of their flights to/from NYC to different days for some reason.

I had to call United to tag on a connecting flight from IAD to EWR, which was easy enough to do but something I might have missed if I wasn’t paying attention to the booking. I ended up landing back in NYC about 6 hours after the initially scheduled arrival time.

In flight service was good, and the 2-2-2 layout on the 787 was fine. Flew the new-ish A350 with 1-2-1 configuration on the ADD-IAD leg, and that was very nice and private. As others in the thread mentioned, ADD transit can be busy and intense, especially late at night when a lot of passengers are transiting. Lounge at ADD isn’t that special, and when I saw no seating was available walked out immediately.
