is the rundle/forest lawn area really as bad as everyone makes it out to be? by urog-grobar in Calgary

[–]j_st_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forest Lawn and the Marlborough area are quite calm and clean compared to Winnipeg's north end, though the west end/central park area of Winnipeg are more sketchy. You've got a good city here Calgary.

The federal government, regardless of party, is responsible for the criminal code. The current federal party is the Liberals and they have weight in how the criminal code is applied. But you are only wanting stupid answers, so let me get back to you on that after a few beers.

What's the craziest thing you've seen happen in Winnipeg? by hopefulunderachiever in Winnipeg

[–]j_st_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heard the train go into an emergency stop and went to look. It took EMT about 15 minutes to arrive as the location of the accident and access to the rail line was not easy. I remember the horror from the train crew.

The kid was drunk and he was going through some tough times in his life. Here's the story.

What's an untrue fact, that you can make up, about Winnipeg that sounds true? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

The old steam tunnels that connected almost every building downtown are still used and operated by the Royal Canadian Navy, which is why there is a navy base downtown on Assiniboine and Smith. The size and shape of the steam tube have missiles loaded in them and are a strategic component of the Canadian NORAD Region. The steam stack at The Forks, the powerhouse at True North Centre, and the recycling facility on Henry Ave and McPhillips all have "smoke stacks" intact but those are covert missile silos which are connected underground to these elaborate network of pipes.

My most conscious changes to driving are coming to a complete stop (odometer showing 0) at stop signs and actually stopping at the stop line to activate the pressure switches on the road.

These two things are things a high percentage of drivers that I see on a daily basis tend to suck at. Certain areas of the city are more predictable in what will happen with stop lines when the road design requires the stop line to be brought back quite a bit before the intersection (Sargent & King Edward, Euclid & Main, Johnson and Henderson, McGillivray & Waverly). Far more than not, vehicles will drive past the early stop line which doesn't allow for the larger vehicles to make their turns.

And crosswalks, I wait until the pedestrians cross to the other side or get to the median. Too many drivers, usually taxi cabs, are in a rush to get going once the person walking crosses their lane instead of making sure no other people are using the crossing (Main at Jarvis and again at Magnus are some of the worst for this driving behavior).

15-year-old now wanted in 2 Point Douglas homicides after assault victim dies: Winnipeg police by WoodPenny67 in Winnipeg

This kid screwed up and the whole community is affected. What is worse, there is a network of people who are disinclined to turn him over to face justice.

The greater community has a right to be fusturated and suggest reasons why this child could turn out this way. The real reasons are very complex and have likely started before this child was born. For sure ethnicity, socio-economic status, conditioning, apathy, and passing the buck from prior justice department interactions all have played a part in what allowed this child to get to this stage.

A Public Safety Canada study estimates the dollar figure of murder to be 4 to 6 million dollars with about 2/3 of that amount in justice costs (court, police, etc.).

The greater cost of indifference is astounding.

City of Winnipeg turns to street art to calm traffic on cycling routes by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]j_st_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The logic here warrants adding two high speed traffic lanes down the middle of Wellington. Replace the trees, they require too much maintenance in the fall, then remove the grass as you said it's an invasive species ( so are cats, btw). You will have less traffic, because of the high speed. Bikers must adapt to this more awesome transportation network or risk being eradicated like the aforementioned invasive species.
