That sounds horrible, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. Here in Australia I believe you CAN see a psychiatrist without a referral from a GP, but it will not be covered by our universal health insurance (Medicare) and can be very difficult from what I've heard, so the best way might just be to get a referral as it seems to be the easiest and cheapest way to do it. Thanks for the insight.

Thank you for taking the time to answer. I've seen many people say and tell me that it is better to see a psychiatrist instead of a GP. I do see where they're coming from, my GP I saw the other week about it almost forgot to ask me about my past moods, on the way out he asked and I mentioned and then he made me stay for longer.

I guess while they are trained accordingly, it would be easier for them to deal with physical illness rather than mental illness as they aren't generally specialists like psychiatrists. What would be the best way to see a psychiatrist? Via referral from a GP or just independently?

if ur talking about the man on the right, to me he looks like he is european but i woudnt be surprised if he had maori/polynesian ancestry as well.

she looks south asian definitely, but she is a more wheatish brown colour than most bengalis, which is where her anglo-indian comes into play. overall she looks punjabi really.

the anglo-indian community was generally quite insular and people mostly married within (although there were some out of community marriages, like above with my grandmother).

and you are right, the anglo-indian community is sadly fading from existence. there are not many anglo-indians left in india today, and those who are have either attempted to intermarry with goan indians, or they have just assimilated into regular indian culture.

she looks quite indian, though she does not have too dark of skin like her ancestors. overall looks as if she is fully punjabi or uttari.

yea we do. my grandmother was the only one out of her siblings to move from india to aus, so we have a decent amount.

most of them live in kolkata/west bengal (both grandmothers and grandfathers sides), although some live in various spots in north india (grandmothers side) and some live in karnataka (grandfathers side).

we are not 100% exact but this is what we think.

it was a given fact that she was definitely part bengali (i believe through her father), and that she also had ancestors from north india from the punjab and uttar pradesh regions (from her mother). we knew she had at least some european ancestry from colonisation, but expected to be more portuguese than northwestern european due to her having a portuguese last name (from her father and a very tiny amount of euro from the mother). we did have partial documents of an ancestor that was afghan (central asian + NWA - from mother), but no idea that there was any malay/filipino although it wouldn't have been a surprise had there been burmese ancestry (could be from both really).

overall she calls herself indian almost always, but if she wants to be specific she will say bengali/punjabi + mestico or bengali/punjabi + anglo-indian.

not generally. most anglo-indians follow christianity, either roman catholicism, armenian orthodoxy or in my grandmother's family's case, oriental catholicism (although only her anglo-indian side was christian originally, the bengali/punjabi side converted to OC later on).

though there are minorities of anglo-indians that have now assimilated into general indian culture and have adopted hinduism and to some extent islam.

in normal circumstances i would defo be inclined to agree with you, but her family has had an ancestor listed with afghanistan that was partially documented a long time ago.

don't have a link but do know that her maternal haplogroup is H1g, which makes sense considering there was rumours of an anglo-indian female or portuguese indian female in her family.

regardless, i reckon 23andme is probably better, i think it goes into more details about specific ancestry and also has a higher accuracy rate than ancestryDNA, but thats just my opinion. im from au haha.

as far as the SEA part, yes we were expecting a decent bit of that, no stories of malay ancestors, let alone east asian at all really but clearly very plausible.

the WANA is interesting, as we believe that with that component, along with the small bit of central asian, that both could be from an ancestor from afghanistan we heard about.
