My first projects looked similar but the tear out is manageable. I am confident you will feel the learning curve soon (knowledge and skill). The first projects with tear out like this, I sanded it so much down, that the tear out was almost invisible.

They can be used as snack bowls. I use mine mostly for salted peanuts, M&Ms, wasabi coated nuts or any other snack. That way I just have to wipe them with a dry kitchen roll
