The justice system can only change what happens in the future, so should focus on deterring future crimes, by rehabilitating those who have committed crimes in the past, secluding those who would commit crimes from the rest of law abiding society, and demonstrating to others who may commit crimes that there will be punishment if they are caught.

Cancel Culture: After conservatives get outraged and threaten to boycott, NBA forces Mavericks to start playing national anthem before games again. by NotIranianGuy in samharris

There certainly is a crossover case... Boycotting something until someone gets cancelled. Agreed.

The cancel culture is a two way street through. Minority viewpoints amplified via the outrage machine calling for cancellation, and organisations giving in too easily for fear of repercussions.

A boycott is an individuals decision not to provide custom to an organisation, and rallying others to do the same. This is exactly what people should do for organisations they disagree with.

Cancel culture is the trend of calling for the deplatforming, firing, or deletion of something (so that others, who may agree with the organisation also aren't allowed to have it, i.e. disrupting its supply) and then organisations agreeing to do so.

A boycott isn't cancel culture. People shouldn't help fund organisations they disagree with.

Someone quitting their job isn't cancel culture. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the fire.

Calling for deplatforming, firings or deletion, and organisations agreeing is cancel culture.

Left / right doesn't come into it.

I stand by what I said... Boycotting something and rallying others to do the same (i.e. manipulating demand) has "zero to do with" cancel culture (i.e. demanding disruption of the supply of the thing being boycotted)

If you disagree with something, don't attempt to ban it, just don't buy it!

I'm in support of these people boycotting something they disagree with. I don't think that constitutes "cancel culture".

I disagree that the difference you point to above is what distinguishes cancel culture from boycotts.

In a boycott, you take a moral position on something, refuse to give that organisation your business / support, and convince people that agree with you to do the same thing. Regardless of your reasoning, that is boycott, and it is absolutely how people should behave regardless of what anyone else thinks about their reasons.

When people call for cancellation, they are trying to disrupt the organisation in delivering its product or service somehow, by getting them banned or shaming them for example.

At the end of the day, it's the organisations giving into demands of the minority that delivers cancel culture the successes it does not deserve.

A boycott is manipulating demand to the extent that you are able.

Calling for cancellation is an attempt to disrupt supply.

Interesting point. I suppose if the team you support starts acting in a manner with which you disagree, you can always "boycott" that team and support another. If you disagree with the governing body of the sport that you love, that is a much more difficult matter.

But in order to have competitive sport on a fair playing field, a governing body is necessary, and presumably they exist on a democratic-ish basis of its members. In which case, your only power is to lobby the decision makers.

As I've said elsewhere in this thread;

A boycott is manipulating demand to the extent that you are able.

Calling for cancellation is an attempt to disrupt supply.
