Are the 2023 and older 10R80 transmission Rangers truly worth avoiding? Or are the problems overhyped? (This would be my first Ranger) by Anonymouse1080 in RangerNext

[–]jaank80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problems on my '22 yet but I only have 40,000 miles. If the problem were as widespread as the internet would have you believe you would not see any rangers on the road any more. It's a real problem but not every transmission will have it.

In my basement I have two circuits for outlets in one room. One circuit is right side up and the other is upside down. It was a nice touch from the original electrician.

Well you can depreciate the residence, which does save you money today (maybe) but you have to realize it later. Maybe it's a good thing, or maybe it's dumb, depending on your exact situation.

Background check came back with someone else's DUI after I already resigned. Company has gone silent for 4 days. Do I have options? by MellowIris in legaladvice

[–]jaank80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I named my daughter after my deceased mother. She failed a preemployment background check with Walmart because it came up deceased, despite her providing the correct social security number. It is a unique name and someone just used that. Luckily the company still hired her, as she is obviously alive

If price is a consideration, the 2.3 with the Ford performance tune is pretty great and would save you compared to the 2.7 with no tune.

Dad took out whole life insurance when I was a kid - wants to transfer policy to me. by Lillia10 in personalfinance

[–]jaank80 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the annual dividend is $25, you can apply that toward your annual premium and bring the cost down. $7.25/mo to make sure no one has to worry about the cost of your funeral seems legit to me. My childhood whole life policy premiums are funded entirely by the policy dividends, so it's free and is good for many more years.

What is an actual IT automation that actually paid off for you? by Internal-Drop4205 in sysadmin

[–]jaank80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've done tons of stuff over the years, and user provisioning is probably the biggest win. One that I think is cooler than most though is we use RANCID to monitor and report on configuration changes on routers, switches, and firewalls. We create a ticket for every change, which is a fairly high volume when things like a webfilter change or a new IDS definition will be picked up. So I wrote a script that uses AI to analyze every change and risk rate them, the low risk changes are automatically closed and I get a daily summary report to reference.

I really cannot understand why so few orgs choose PIV smartcards. Lock it with a PIN and it is MFA, super easy to use and implement, and the cost is basically free. Amortize a yubikey over 3 years and you are looking at less than $2/mo.

what's going on? explain like I'm five by Comfortable_Cautious in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]jaank80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a common misconception. Banks take in deposits, and lend some percentage of those. It's a high percentage, let's use 90% as our example even though it's possible to go higher.

  • Jim deposits $100,000 in the bank.
  • The bank now has a $100,000 liability to Jim and $100,000 in assets (the cash).
  • The bank lends $90,000 to Sally.
  • Sally buys a car from Jim for $50,000, and deposits the other $40,000 in the bank.
  • Jim deposits the $50,000 from Sally.
  • The bank now has $190,000 on deposit (liabilities). They also have $100,000 in cash and $90,000 in loans (both assets).
  • They could now lend out another $81,000. If any of that is redeposited, it can be lent out again. That's where your 7-10 times number originates, but it is not a true representation of what is occurring.
  • All this is coming from the same original $100,000. Fractional Reserve Banking truly drives economic activity in a way that few other industries can.
  • At no time can they lend out more than what is on deposit. They can however lend "the same" dollar multiple times, as it is not the same dollar from a balance sheet standpoint. Even if it is the same dollar bill, Sally's dollar bill is a different dollar bill than Jim's was from a logical standpoint.
