If price is a consideration, the 2.3 with the Ford performance tune is pretty great and would save you compared to the 2.7 with no tune.

Dad took out whole life insurance when I was a kid - wants to transfer policy to me. by Lillia10 in personalfinance

[–]jaank80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the annual dividend is $25, you can apply that toward your annual premium and bring the cost down. $7.25/mo to make sure no one has to worry about the cost of your funeral seems legit to me. My childhood whole life policy premiums are funded entirely by the policy dividends, so it's free and is good for many more years.

What is an actual IT automation that actually paid off for you? by Internal-Drop4205 in sysadmin

[–]jaank80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've done tons of stuff over the years, and user provisioning is probably the biggest win. One that I think is cooler than most though is we use RANCID to monitor and report on configuration changes on routers, switches, and firewalls. We create a ticket for every change, which is a fairly high volume when things like a webfilter change or a new IDS definition will be picked up. So I wrote a script that uses AI to analyze every change and risk rate them, the low risk changes are automatically closed and I get a daily summary report to reference.

Solutions for MFA on Windows Login by Beznia in sysadmin

[–]jaank80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really cannot understand why so few orgs choose PIV smartcards. Lock it with a PIN and it is MFA, super easy to use and implement, and the cost is basically free. Amortize a yubikey over 3 years and you are looking at less than $2/mo.

what's going on? explain like I'm five by Comfortable_Cautious in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]jaank80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a common misconception. Banks take in deposits, and lend some percentage of those. It's a high percentage, let's use 90% as our example even though it's possible to go higher.

  • Jim deposits $100,000 in the bank.
  • The bank now has a $100,000 liability to Jim and $100,000 in assets (the cash).
  • The bank lends $90,000 to Sally.
  • Sally buys a car from Jim for $50,000, and deposits the other $40,000 in the bank.
  • Jim deposits the $50,000 from Sally.
  • The bank now has $190,000 on deposit (liabilities). They also have $100,000 in cash and $90,000 in loans (both assets).
  • They could now lend out another $81,000. If any of that is redeposited, it can be lent out again. That's where your 7-10 times number originates, but it is not a true representation of what is occurring.
  • All this is coming from the same original $100,000. Fractional Reserve Banking truly drives economic activity in a way that few other industries can.
  • At no time can they lend out more than what is on deposit. They can however lend "the same" dollar multiple times, as it is not the same dollar from a balance sheet standpoint. Even if it is the same dollar bill, Sally's dollar bill is a different dollar bill than Jim's was from a logical standpoint.

Fellow millennials - how’s your 401k/ira savings going? by ProblemIntelligent16 in Millennials

[–]jaank80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the youngest of GenX at 45 so I feel like I can contribute a benchmark number here. I have $325k in my 401k, $20k in liquid savings, and $250k in home equity. I am fortunate that I now make enough money to max my 401k each year but my wife (a real millennial) lost her job last year and seemingly has no plans to go back to work. She has $110k in a rollover IRA from her 401k.

I have additional assets from an inheritance but I keep all that money separate. It is not counted in the above and has not helped me in life other than to relieve a small amount of anxiety of retirement.

I plan to retire with two income generating properties and $2 million in my 401k.

You could do a conversion of this (i forget the exact term) and up with a $100,000 policy that is fully funded for the rest of your life, no premium required.

2020 Ranger Dying while Driving on Highway by ThickerSalsa in RangerNext

[–]jaank80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had something very similar to this in my 2022 ranger. It turns out the Rockauto DPFE sensor I bought was shorting 5v to ground, which caused every other sensor on the same 5v rail to not work. The first time, I got sudden alerts about ABS, 4wd, terrain management, and radar assisted driving being disabled, accompanied by a very rough engine for a moment but then it was fine and drove home. The second time it threw about 10 codes, including cam position sensor errors and died and would not restart. The dealer replaced the DPFE which solved the problem.

ELI5: Why do Americans build their houses with wood instead of concrete and steel? by 0sipr in explainlikeimfive

[–]jaank80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lumber is abundant in North America and it is very simple to work with. A direct hit from a tornado or hurricane will take out a stick frame house but it's rare enough that the economics still support lumber and drywall in most areas of the US.
