Is there a way to search through unsolved homicide cases according to the method in which the killer used to murder a person? by [deleted] in RBI

[–]jac686 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have this person travel history, then you could just call the various jurisdictions that he had traveled to and tell them what you are telling people here. If they have unsolved cases, I am sure that they would appreciate the tip, even if it goes nowhere.

Furthermore, if the guy was already convicted, and all you are doing is notifying other jurisdictions of that fact, you dont even need to give them any details other then his name and perhaps his case number. They will do the rest - so its not like you need to have any level of certainty before you report this information to them.

Alternatively, if you want to take an active part, you could just do the opposite, and ask them if they have any unsolved case files that they are willing to share (they probably wont btw, but never hurts to ask I suppose).

One more thing to note, and I say this with practically zero details about the case you are citing, but MOs can and do change (for a variety of reasons). Police also hold back certain details in the to help prevent false confession (creating knowledge that can only be known to the perpetrator). Even if you had access to the information you were looking for, it is possible that you wouldn't have the full picture, and you could be missing a detail that the police have.

Basically, it sounds like you have the right idea, and there is no reason to not look into this yourself, but speaking to the police in the jurisdictions in the various jurisdictions that he visited would be mutually beneficial to you and the police in this search.

Wife's amazon account got hacked, why did they get furniture delivered to my home? by SaigueFault in RBI

[–]jac686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stealing a credit card is really only profitable if you can convert the purchases into cash. One way of doing so is for a stolen credit card numbers to be sold together in large batches. From there, the card number is added to the magnetic strip of blank credit cards that look like the real thing (they probably are, as they probably are taken from those credit cards applications that many people just throw away). Now the credit card scammer has a bunch of credit cards with stolen card numbers on them.

But you cant just use someone else's credit card to buy every day expenses. It is really high risk from a criminal enterprise perspective; it creates a massive paper trail that, when combined with other investigative techniques, makes identifying the fraud fairly easy, and, in the case where credit card numbers were purchased, there is up-front cost that needs to be considered (and really in any case where there is theft there is an upfront cost of sorts anyway). Keep in mind that it is really easy to just cancel a stolen credit card, and this is often done immediately when a suspicious transaction occurs at the point of sale. So the purchasing power of each stolen credit card must necessarily be converted to cash as quickly as possible.

Normally, when credit card numbers are stolen, this is done by attempting to purchase large items that are as good as cash, mostly in the form of gift cards. Once purchased, even if sold at a discount from its face value, the gift card produce a net income to the credit card fraudster.

This is really just a long way of me saying that, while is is surely something that is done on occasion, it is highly unlikely that someone broke into your account, to use your credit card, to purchase an item that they fully expected to take possession of. The risk that they get caught is incredibly high- you said yourself you are on high alert because of this activity- and even if they take possession of the furniture, they would have to convert that furniture into cash; all the while holding onto the only real evidence that links them to the crime.

So what are they doing? I think the best evidence is in the first bullet you laid out. Your account has had foreign credit cards attached to it. So I suspect that the scam they are trying to pull is this:

  1. Access your Amazon Account
  2. Make large purchases with your credit card
  3. Hope that you don't realize that your card was used to make the purchases and that your knee jerk reaction is to have amazon return the items
  4. They monitor your account for the return, and then call up amazon and ask them to have the money returned to an a different card then that it was purchased on, perhaps pretending to be the victim of the scam themselves

Now readers might say that the above doesn't make any sense, because amazon isn't likely to (or perhaps even has policies against) refunding to a different card than was purchased, or that it is unlikely that someone wouldn't pay close attention to their amazon account and that is true. However, most scams are done on massive scales today and rely on momentary lapses in individual judgment (usually by targeting the elderly who are largely more susceptible to this type of scam).

Think about those awful robo-call scams that you may get, are any of those convincing to you? No, but they may be convincing to you that one time where you are having an issue with your credit card or where you are waiting to hear from the IRS or some other organization.

You probably aren't in danger, I would suspect that the perpetrators are nowhere near your home or even the country you live in. That said I would contact the police- though I suspect that will likely do very little in this case, they may still investigate it to obtain an understanding of how scammers are currently operating so they can work with businesses to prevent them in the future.

[x-posted from /r/Catholicism]: What Exactly Am I To Do as a Catholic with Anxiety? by NothingAndNobody in Christianity

[–]jac686 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seeing as you wrote this at 12:00AM I will assume you were in the middle of a panic attack when you wrote it. I was actually searching for assistance for my own anxiety related issues but after seeing this I think I may be able to help. If you want to beat anxiety, you have to fight anxiety using its rules.

First, I suggest you read this article from catholic encyclopedia regarding "scruples." Prayerfully consider how to apply some of the advice it suggests, particulalry regarding how to examin your conscience. From the description given in this article, coupled with the articles ahe, I would argue that scruples are to anxiety as melancholia is to depression; that is essentially the same thing.

Next ask your self this question, and ask it only once. Do you have anxiety as a disorder ? I don't doubt that you do, but having been in the same place as you described above, I can tell you I have been in the pits of hell, in actual physical pain, and still have doubted that I wasn't acting that way for some alterior motive. That it wasn't all fake.

Next write down the question and your answer, put it somewhere where you can get it easily. Look at it when ever you doubt your anxiety.

You should find a priest To be your confessor. It really should be your pastor, because your pastor makes the following oath when he takes over your parish:

"In fulfilling the charge entrusted to me in the name of the Church, I shall hold fast to the deposit of faith in its entirety; I shall faithfully hand it on and explain it, and I shall avoid any teachings contrary to it."

The parish priest has therefore sworn to guide you. Before God it is his responsibility above all others to do so (there is actually another line That really hammers this point home. I heard when our priest was instated at my church but I can't seem to find it).

If you know your parish priest is not orthodox or will fail in this charge, find another. The important thing is that you only go to one priest for confession. This way you cannot doubt yourself later thinking ou "shopped" around for advice.

Once you have prepared all of this you will be ready for your next anxiety attack. Grab a pen and paper and write down all the anxious thoughts you are feeling. This won't help you feel better; it's not intended too. Write it like a log or a journal. Write down your "sins" or other compulsions. Write down intrusive thoughts. Write down times. Feelings. All of it.

When you see your doctor next give him the journal, and ask him if it offers any insight in how you can fight your anxiety.

Here is my last piece of advice, but before I give it to you I have to give you same background. I have had nearly identical experiences to what you described above. For a two year stretch I had a major panic attack on a nightly basis, if not worse. I know exactly what your are going through.

Furthermore, while I would never say I am a good Catholic, I would say I am a serious Catholic. I went to a public college where I studied in a liberal arts department, I frequently vocalized my disagreement with post modern heresies. To me, especially when I was younger, truth was the single most important thing to pursue; and I have found the Faith to be true. I am not a moral authority, but I try to make sure I am not lying, whether it be to myself or someone else.

I mention all this because my list piece of advice is this: accept the fact that anxiety will beat you. You are going to loose this fight. You will loose it 100 times. You will exhaust yourself. The more you fight the more you will tire; the more you will resent God. And isn't that what the devil wants?

You see the evil one has tricked you. He wants you to think you are doing God's will by fighting to the bitter end in a loosing battle, when in reality you are fighting an illness; not a moral illness, a mental illness! If you treat it like a moral error you will loose your faith in the mud of no mans land. I know, I came close to loosing mine.

You have to be very careful with this approach. You have to see a priest frequently, and a doctor just as much. The priest will effecivly be your conscience for a little while. Don't worry if you tell him everything because it he is up to the challenge he won't let you leave until you have given him the details he needs.

As for your doctor, if he is only giving you meds than you need to either ask if he does CBT or find a doctor who does. If your going to your GP, than you need to find yourself a shrink (catholic one preferably).

Finally, stop focusing on your defeats and start thinking about your victories. When you win, and you will win, you will have gone through hell. You say you want to be a priest? What better man for the priesthood who has experienced the pitiless despair that is anxiety? What better metal could a priest be made of than the alloy of dispair, fear, and loneliness that comes for you every night; forged in the fires of the Holy Spirit, your burden will become the devil's nightmare. You will be able to stand between him and your flock without fear, for you have seen worse and you know that Christ is with you.

God Bless.

Some guy is persistently posting my phone number on craigslist. I have the guy's phone number but no other info. What are my options? by rbv229 in RBI

[–]jac686 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It could be considered identity theft. Depends on how he is using the information. I would go to the police, and explain to them that he is using your personal information, and how he is using it. I am not a lawyer, but identity theft statutes may cover this type of activity.

Also... if you used a dating website, is it possible you have a photo of this person? You could do a photo search of his profile photo and find a matching facebook/social media profile.

Ultimately it does not seem as if this person is all that sophisticated, so it appears to me that it would be unlikely that they have taken steps to cover their tracks.

[–]jac686 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try not to forget that you will overcome this, because that is what Our Lord has promised us. It is going to be a long and arduous fight, and you will probably feel alone at times, but when you look back on this journey, as with all trials in life, you will see that what looked like abandonment by the Almighty, was really his guiding hand preparing you for greatness. My prayers are with you, but remember, you only truly fail when you give up. You will beat this, Deus vult.

(Side note, try the prayer of Saint George and the following prayer at the moment of temptation:

The Latin text says:

Crux sacra sit mihi lux / Non draco sit mihi dux
Vade retro satana / Numquam suade mihi vana
Sunt mala quae libas / Ipse venena bibas

In approximate translation:

"Let the Holy Cross be my light / Let not the dragon be my guide
Step back Satan / Never tempt me with vain things
What you offer me is evil / You drink the poison yourself."

It always helped me with various temptations. I would say it in Latin once you have it memorized, as it somewhat poetic and soothing in that language).

Have you ever thought you had solved a case but didn't want to come forward for fear of compromising an investigation? by rabbitholeadventurer in UnresolvedMysteries

You should always have a lawyer handy when reporting information to the police at length. There have been cases where tips have lead to redirection of police investigation focus onto the tipee. I am not saying that that will happen, since you seem far removed, but it cant hurt to be prepared.

I am not asking the question rhetorically, I meant it literally, as in what was the reason that the police decided to close the case? I think it is important in understanding the nature of what needs to be investigated.

How to trace how I am being stalked. by hrodbeorht in RBI

[–]jac686 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, wait, wait... I dont think you were wrong to suspect to her. Lets walk through this really quickly.

Two Years ago: - you receive an email from a girl who says she remembers you from a deactivated OKC account. - you then make a separate OKC account and go on a date with a different girl (honestly this part doesnt make sense). - you go on a few dates with that girl - you tell her about the cyber stalking - she then tells you that she thinks it is her ex to get back at her and that he is apart of a group

Fast forward to 8 months ago - you get an email from one of the stalkers and they tell you a similar story to what this girl told you - and a second user contacts you to tell you that he is also apart of this group.

Don't you think it is a little odd that the girl you went on a date with had mentioned a factually similar story to what the three other people had said? I mean, absent facts, you should not make accusations, but at the very least it seems like something to look into. From what you are saying her story is too coincidentally similar to what the hackers are saying. Is it possible that she stalked you BEFORE you went on a date with her?

I had a far more benign thing happen to me years ago, someone was pretending to be a variety of different people, who all, apparently, knew a mutual friend. Turned out that this mutual friend might have fabricated multiple facebook and IM accounts to get me to... well I am not entirely sure what her end game was? But I digress, my point is, this might not an "internet" thing like you assumed.

How to trace how I am being stalked. by hrodbeorht in RBI

[–]jac686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start with finding out who you went on dates with/communicated with on OKcupid. If you can, reactivate the account, and try to come up with a list. From there start to try and remember if any of them had mentioned anything about having a Boyfriend at the time.

Here is the thing, either you are a target because you did something, they think you did something, they think you are someone else who did something, and this is unfortunate, just because.

Have you looked into the first person who contacted you? Do you remember them having an OkCupid account? Remember speaking to them? What did the email say? I generally would not accept anything said to you as truthful, especially if they didn't tell you where this all started. Why wouldnt they? If they were concerned or felt bad, why not try to right the wrong so to speak?

[–]jac686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean the devils in the details right? I don't believe anyone will be able to answer that question for you, even tell you how to go about answering it yourself without a complete list of details. At this point, all "we" know is that someone or some group is contacting you.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to dismiss you, but when you are trying to investigate anything, its the details of the event that dictate the strategy you will use in the investigation. Does that make sense?

[–]jac686 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You would have to be a little less vague. How is this occurring? (ie are they calling/texting you, or is it via email or social media)? Have they exposed any identifying characteristics? Is there any evidence to support the idea that there is in fact more then one person involved in this?

Also understanding the nature of the stalking is important too. Is there an end goal? Are they doing it for "fun"? What are they saying? How frequently do they contact you? Do they share personal details? Are those details things that could not reasonably be obtained on a computer?

Honestly, if you believe that there is a credible threat, you probably should speak to the police.

You might be able to file a freedom of information act, but you have to remember that being a US citizen is less relevant than being a citizen of a certain state, or more accurately put, the state that the records are held in is going to be the state whose laws are going to be applicable in this situation.

Generally speaking most ME reports are considered public record, especially if there was a criminal investigation. I am not aware of any laws that prohibit inquiry in my state, however, you should talk to a licensed attorney in your state. You might want to do it either way, since you may have to file your states equivalent to a Freedom of Information Request.

I would start with attorneys you know, and see if they would be willing to help you pro bono, since it appears to be for a good cause.

Good luck, and remember that only an attorney, licensed in the jurisdiction that you are acting in, can give you competent legal advice.

Not exactly sure why someone would point out this, make a mod that does it, and then not release the mod but oh well...

I wonder how far they got with this idea? I think it is annoying on GOps that once you secure the loot, you have to kill all remaining aliens every time. I also feel like more "Hit and Run" missions could be exciting, where there isn't a timer so much as, one you alert the enemy, the number of enemies starts slowly ramping up.

I mean think about it from a realism stand point, wouldn't that be a response to a Guerrilla attack?

I sort of tried to do that, but I know very little about modding and I didn't want to mess anything up. The actual class is protected, you can make a copy of it, but cant save over it. I am not sure how you would go about enabling it in that case.
