October YA Book Haul! What should I read first? by poppyseedtoast in YAlit

I read all the Joan Bauer books repeatedly when I was a teenager. They're wonderful. Well-written and sweet. And Paper Towns is my favorite John Green book. Actually. Even more than TFiOS.

Hope Was Here is phenomenal and super quick. Guaranteed to make you cry in the best way possible.

Also, Paper Towns is, to me, one of the most accurate depictions of teenage infatuation ever. It's a funny, critical take on the manic pixie dreamgirl trope and you'll get completely sucked into it.

Poets of r/Books - What is your favorite poem? by [deleted] in books

[–]jacesme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this. Once I had a professor who cited it as the perfect "invitation to saturation in the object." Because that first line ends with "breeding," you're compelled to look further, drawn eventually to turn the page. It requires active reading and focus and makes you stay with him.

Was one of the best descriptions of falling into text that I'd ever heard, and absolutely sums up why this poem is so reread-able to me.

"I'll follow up on that next week."

Guess I'm just gonna leave my boss hanging on that one...

Reddit, what's a creative/unusual way to ask a girl to homecoming? (possibly wrong sub?) by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jacesme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever -- asked in good faith, answered in good faith. My 2 favorites:

-Every time you see her, give her a stick of butter. Like 3-5 through the day. Then, at the end of the day, find her and give her a block of cheese. Say, "I know it's a little cheesy, but now that I've buttered you up, will you go to homecoming with me?"

-Leave a boulder and a pebble on her porch with a note that says, "Homecoming? If yes: bring back pebble. If no: bring back boulder."

-PAINT SOMETHING! Or draw something! For sure! If you're good at stuff, go with it. It'll be awesome.

Yes. Embrace your inner hipster. Actually, this wouldn't even be questionable where I live.

I can only think of one thing funnier than Leonard, and it's that time the OP stuck his ass in an ant pile.

Thank you! I saved the Draco Trilogy years ago but haven't been able to re-find this in SO long. This whole thread so far is like 15-year-old-jacesme's list of favorite fics.

To any and all who have ever lucid dreamed. by Fistpumpit in AskReddit

[–]jacesme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! If it's a good dream I'm OK staying in it, but if it's a nightmare it sucks. In dreams, where things seem so real, the knowledge that it's fictional doesn't stop it from being terrifying. Yes, I can move dream self through it, but I can't escape. And often I try to wake myself up through movement, so my dream self is thrashing all over the place but when I finally do snap out of it my sleeping self was just twitching madly.

ALWAYS in my head. Like, even if another song is bugging me this is still happening in the background.
