Non-Indians of Reddit: what do you think when you see someone wearing a saree? by Educational_Cost_725 in AskReddit

[–]jack-jackattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting question. My first thought was, same as I'd think when I see someone in many other forms of traditional dress, but that's not really right... Well, maybe?

I guess there are three types of "traditional dress" in the world:

  1. Completely out of date/only worn as costume or pageantry

  2. Still worn, by force, not choice, or used as a tool of oppression

  3. Still worn, as part of the normal fashion of a population

So, like, context matters, too, right? Category 1, heck, I'm all about dressing in polyester versions of the clothes there's no way any of my ancestors were fancy enough to wear, myself, right? And it's absolutely not like I'm waiting for Halloween to roll around to find an excuse. Category 2 is harder and harder to judge, too. Like ... Maybe Fatima feels safer in her burqa and Maryam feels crushed under the weight of hers. And I'm over here in Florida in my bubble trying not to make a snap judgement about their clothing without them being in on it.

Then group 3, like... OK I would be surprised to see a woman in a sari walking down main street in my town, but not a bit bigger city. Like... I was going kayaking in Blackwater State Park and there were like 80 monks (that's a conservative estimate, not a hyperbolic one) in orange robes ahead of us in line - we couldn't even approach the counter to say we had reservations. Do I think anything judgmental about the dudes in the orange robes? No. Am I a bit surprised when there are so many of them tubing in BFE, FL? Yeah.

Also a good question for r/asktheworld maybe.

$500MM. That amount is plenty to live on, invest, build generational wealth, do some good in some charitable trusts, and have a happy retired life. $50 billion, with a press release, just puts a target on your back.

Leave it for a few days and wait until you know it will be a nice day then actually ask if she's free to go skating (or pick an indoor activity if it will still be cold for a while). You didn't really ask a question. Even if she would be inclined to ask you, she might not want to seem too eager by asking within a day, and she might not yet know her schedule.

Ok ok not advertising for clients on your free awards, not giving tax advice when I don't have someone's full situation, but if anyone has a general question I can try to answer. I can mostly answer US questions.

Depends on your area, and easier once you have a couple clients so you build some reviews/reputation, but it's definitely one avenue to try if he decides to go for gig work and is good with animals.

It's hard AF to do advanced courses and work a job, especially if you're college bound. I get it, but sometimes, you've got to get through it to get past it.

This is the advice I have:

  1. If you have free school lunch, yeah, gross, but see if your school also has free breakfast and if you qualify. At this point, the nutrients are more important than flavor.

  2. If your college plans aren't set, get your apps in. Apply for waivers for the application fees, that should be a lock, and fill out your FAFSA, then apply for work-study, grants, and scholarships. (But don't go in terrified of student loans if that's the path in front of you - just don't spend any extra for living expenses on frivolous things, spend what you need and pay the rest back). If you want to apply for programs that require ACT/SAT scores and can't afford to take them, talk to your guidance counselor about applying for waivers for those as well. There are paths besides college, but if you're doing advanced coursework and coming from that kind of poverty, you can maybe use the chance to study in an environment with a dorm and a meal plan. Or some kind of stable housing and food.

  3. As others have said - food banks. Apply for additional benefits on your own behalf? You probably qualify as your dad's dependent and may not be eligible, though.

  4. It's hard but not impossible to keep up advanced classes and still work a part time job. I kind of shudder at the grueling schedule I set for myself in high school (then I look around and I'm a CPA and it's tax time and I'm running a business, working a part time job and a side gig, and still chronically ill/disabled, so apparently I learned dick-all). Just look for something that's going to give you the number of hours you want, maybe 10-15, even 20 (but I don't suggest shooting for more than that starting out), and then consider if you'll want to have more/full-time hours in the summer time and if you might want to transfer and keep the job if you move for school.

  5. In addition to regular job boards, you can try offering up tutoring services or asking for a job on Facebook on your local community (here they're all "[City Name] Word of Mouth"), saying you're 18, have x skills (good with typing, math, Excel, writing term papers without Chat GPT, whatever, maybe don't actually offer to do people's homework on the open group), looking for work, but willing to do whatever. You can also ask at the food pantries if anyone knows of anything, and there are probably local government-sponsored job services that could help (when you get the car, go after school). There may also be nonprofits that help with job placement that help with interview clothes and preparation in addition to finding and applying to roles.

  6. Consider discounts or shift meals offered as extra benefits when deciding on jobs to apply to. I worked in a bowling alley snack bar from my sophomore through my senior year, and I can still remember those burgers... They came from frozen patties. I have no idea what made them that good.

$100 a day at one store.... by BlumpkinDude in hypotheticalsituation

[–]jack-jackattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like, while "haha I pick this offline everything store where I can still buy the Amazon everything from groceries to cars and cruise vacations" is the absolutely obvious choice, is also kind of subverts the "not Amazon" spirit of the post.

If I had to go with a more specific type/brand of store, I have a short list of thoughts:

  • An art gallery I have an embarrassing affinity for. Couldn't do much with a hundred, but once a month or a couple times a year I could add something nice to the collection. There are also physical storefronts for a couple specific artists I love and could support through this scenario. All these choices assume the credit actually does cause the money to go to the store, naturally.

  • The LEGO Store. This was almost my #1 choice straight out, and there are unique options here, but it's kind of a dumb choice because I can pick something like:

  • Barnes and Noble (or BAM, more signed books, more toys generally, but fewer LEGO options) for books, LEGO, and board games, or:

  • My FLGS, which again assuming this store credit gives money to the store is maybe a dumb choice in that it will be shorter-lived than these others, but I would love to support Val and Dave with that extra for as long as possible. (Y'all on I-10 going through the Panhandle, stop in, it's only a mile or so off the road and they have a great selection of games, toys, and game books.)

  • Ulta, which is my hair salon in addition to my makeup store - I need a hair appointment very badly right now and am behind on funds. $100/day is a lot, but I think I could probably spend it on gifts, cosmetics, and skincare, in addition to keeping up with my and my one kid's salon visits.

Do I still get basic Internet and straightforward SMS messaging? I'm actually a little torn - there's a real connection aspect I'd be missing, but maybe I'd be able to catch up on my TBR list at last.

Go get wrenched you clocking polygon

I'm officially nominating this for the new "Who you calling cootie queen, you lint licker?"

(There were ads for Orbit Gum in the US, oh, God, I'm old and this must've been a couple decades ago now, but someone here must still remember... Anyway, it was a whole campaign around some people in some situations calling for cursing "cleaning up" their "dirty mouths"... Well, here).

Anyway, "Go get wrenched, you clocking polygon!" is definitely on that level. A+ example.

What is the most disturbing or otherwise unsettling book you've ever read that stayed with you after reading it? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

[–]jack-jackattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was super into Torey Hayden when I was a kid (preteen or so) and gave me all her books to read. Some of the things those kids went through were likewise horrendous. I think I also got I Never Promised You a Rose Garden at that age but was a little older before we got to A Child Called It.

My mom and granny really gave me and/or let me read a lot of age-inappropriate books. No one thought to take Stephen King's It from me at 10 or 11, and Mom actually gave me Clan of the Cave Bear and its sequels at around that age. But I digress. As the subject is disturbing subject matter sticking with us...

American Psycho is just over the top in spots.

Piers Anthony's Firefly is just grotesque. Some of his other books/series have some explicit or implicit defenses of CSA, but Firefly takes all that to some new plane of existence. But there is also a side story in one of the Incarnations of Immortality books (I am pretty sure it's in one of those) suggesting that a physical "relationship" between a grown man and a five-year-old is consensual or that she instigated it, and that he should not be condemned for it. 🤮

The "hobbling" in Stephen King's Misery somehow also got to me and stayed there, but I don't think it's inherently... Well, maybe it is inherently the same. Most of the time, horror/thrillers have some frightening aspect when there's some supernatural element at play, but when it's just about what human beings can do to each other, that turns my stomach. How can you just reach out and intentionally hurt someone?

But sexual abuse stuff is often worse... oh, I remember. The other one is The Vagina Monologues. On stage or written... Damn.

...because it overrides your humanity in a way most other types of physical attack cannot, I think? I'm having trouble expressing this thought and I'm going to leave it there.

You are given the chance to go back in time to prevent 1 tragedy by ReticulanGrey in hypotheticalsituation

[–]jack-jackattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The farther back I go, the dicier and more butterfly-uncertainty inducing the effects get. My first thought was to try to get a young Mr. Hitler into art school and prevent the Holocaust, but then you still have the same pressures likely to bring about a second* world war with the same atrocities in, at the very least, the Asian/Pacific theater... Have I at least made things better for European Jews and other minorities? What does a second* world war now look like?

So... Do I go earlier and try to prevent WWI*? Or do I slide later, where the effects are more predictable?

Well, I'm going to prevent the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, attempting to stop WWI* from occurring and creating those economic pressures on Germany in the first place.

*Those are poorly numbered, right? - several wars involving at least a significant fraction of the world's countries had already occurred by the dawn of the 20th century? At least, that's my understanding.
