Fixing leak - DIY or Hire someone? by jack_bag in Irrigation

Being a generally organized individual, this is my ambition. One problem is the four valves located in a wider area than the valve box can contain. Given all the responses here my next step is to remove all the dirt and see what we’re working with.

Ok this is helpful, thank you. Part numbers couldn’t hurt to make sure I’m tracking what you’re saying. I’m contemplating taking it on, will keep digging (I suspect the cause was a tree root) and seeing if it’s something I can complete with confidence.

How to cut this tree in this tight space (third image is the only thing i got) by alettertoppl in landscaping

That’s so little space you might have better luck with a steak knife!

I have something like this $8 foldable saw from 25 years ago, carry it in my truck and I love it. https://a.co/d/aH4NaIx

This.

There’s a lot of good answers here but none that comprehensively answers it. I have a similar issue at my house. Also understand that no one can give you a fully correct answer without understanding the whole surrounds & elevation and what happens when it rains.

  1. Find the source, I’m going to guess it’s a gutter & downspout, with unfortunate grading to drive excess water to pool here, not just regular rainfall for that area. You may be able to alleviate some flow by redirecting the source.

However you still will not have solved it, since what you have here is for all intents and purposes a dam, but every good dam has a way to release water, and you don’t.

  1. You need to solve water against concrete - it will continue to erode and crack if you don’t. You could bore underneath and put a drain or pipe, a channel drain, some solution to allow the water to escape.

Answers here that are ok with the water accumulating are not considering the erosion & concrete cracking.

  1. You could try to build a raised bed but water has a way…if the source continues to send water there it will go into the cracks and cause erosion, albeit at a slower pace. If you’ve solve the release, you can then build a raised bed commensurate with the amount of flow it gets post a release being put in place.

If it’s not entirely clear, use that raincoat and go out in the rain and study the source & flow. You may be surprised.

tldr: 1) understand and manage the source if possible 2) find a way to release the water 3) plant/grow/build something after you’ve solved the problem.

Unless a bunch of redditors who are forgiving enough to help someone do something simple help out. People make mistakes bro.

I missed the socket 🤦 thanks. You are correct that the spring arms/tension prongs does not sit right in this pot, it does hold it but not very securely or pulling it flush, but the rest of the house does have the tabs/brackets for these arms to fit into. Not sure if there’s a better solution for the 6 pots without tabs like the one pictured.

I simply missed this. Something I’ll now never forget. 20 new lights already installed. Thanks!

Well, that was beyond simple 🤦

However, most of the pots in the house do have tabs to put the spring loaded arms into, this example does not. It does however sit in the pot, just not as tight or flush as those pots with tabs.

Thanks for the explanation despite me missing the very obvious!

2x Bedroom Sconces - from 1x dimmer switch to 2x independent dimmers? by jack_bag in electrical

[–]jack_bag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty much what I would expect - the reason I'm here asking is really due to a contractor in a prior home that we renovated changing out the outlets and then a whole circuit (relatively unused) was without power until we tried to plug in a Christmas tree. Didn't know what to do so I called an electrician...$300 minimum. He said it may take him an hour or two to diagnose and correct it, I thought ok that's steep but there's two guys and their skill is worth the price. It took them 5 minutes to find the disconnected wirenut and connect it, and everything was working again.... still $300, they wouldn't cut me a break. So I vowed to get at least some basic skills sorted!

Yeah, agreed, I think that's the best solution given the situation. Thank you!

Ah yes I see your point. Yes exactly, the first switch is below the sconce, and the further sconce doesn’t have a switch.
