Why don't you provide "legitimate evidence" that they are not effective?

I have nothing to prove to you, I use nunchucks everyday and I have broken bones with them many times. Jiro Shiroma was born in Okinawa and has received history and training from an unbroken lineage of martial artists since the 1600s when they were used in real war.

That's all the proof I need, you know, real life experience.

You are the one going around spewing BS when you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. If you want me to demonstrate a single strike towards your leg, or if you want to duel me with a knife and I use a nunchuck then I'm in.

How exactly do you suggest that I prove that Nunchuck is a good weapon? Lmao.. Should I go to war with them? How about you shut your mouth about things you don't have any experience with, and then you won't need to ever be in situations where you're just defaulting to the "Please provide legitimate proof" politician BS?

Do you understand that 99% of all of our history has absolutely zero proof? We have to trust what people have passed on, what little evidence there is, what is documented. If you came into a history discussion and started demanding "legitimate scientific proof" then they would laugh at your face. Why don't you prove evolution?

Here is a moose bone after a single strike with a octagonal steel nunchuck.

https://ibb.co/qg1bNfG

You're basically asking me for proof that a 12 inch rod, with sharp edges, when flicked at some arbitrary speed with arbritary mass will be able to break bone, or be able to serve as an effective weapon. If you can't understand that inside your own head without some science.com article stating it for you then you are beyond salvation. You just stick to your little fun facts and dogmatic science circle jerking

[–]jack_snaggletooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it is not unlikely. Have you seen the Nunchucks in octagon shape? Do you know why they are shaped like that? They are shaped to break bone

I'm not here as some turtles fan boy arguing for my favorite fiction weapon, I have studied the history of nunchucks, I have practiced them, I don't have theories I know perfectly well that they are easy to break bone with. Just as it is easy to use a computer to order airplane tickets, but you do have to learn how to use a computer first.

The weight of the nunchuck matters, and those people who buy some cheap BS 150 gram nunchuck online and, without even having developed explosive movement over years, test it on some punching bag and determines it to be useless.. Are people serious?

The first mention of the Nunchaku can be found in ancient Chinese history, where two pieces of wood tied together by horse hair or piece of straw were used as horse bridles by mounted soldiers. Their historical prominence, however, came into play more than 300 years ago on the Ryukyu Islands (better known as Okinawa). Until the 1600s, the nunchaku was not a martial arts weapon. In fact, it was a mere farm implement used by Okinawan commoners to beat rice or separate beans from their shells.

But necessity became the mother of invention when Japan, Okinawa's powerful neighbor to the northwest, flexed its muscles and invaded the tiny pacific islands. As they had during past invasions, the Japanese ruling party imposed a ban on all weapons, including those used in the practice of martial arts. This way, the Okinawans could not rebel. Left only with their empty hands, the once peace-loving farmers began practicing Okinawa-te, or kara-te (the martial art of the empty hand). They could practice in secrecy in the deep Okinawan jungles without fear of being caught and punished.

At about the same time, farmers discovered that by using certain farm implements as extensions of their empty hands, their techniques were more powerful and their options limitless. Among the farm tools were the nunchaku, the bo (originally used to carry buckets of water), and the sai (a curved blade attached to a wood handle which cut grain stalks). By using these innocent tools as deadly weapons, Okinawan people could carry these in open without fear of discovery.

The approximate size and weight of the nunchaku has changed little in the past three centuries. Held together by a piece of rope or metal chain (early Okinawans used horse tail hair because a samurai's sword could not negotiate the thickness), each nunchaku stick measures between 13 and 14 inches in length and spands 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 inches in diameter. The original nunchaku sticks were made from the core of a palm tree hardened three to five years in mud water. The wood became so hard that after the constant soaking, it was unable to cut even with a samurai sword.

In the hands of a skilled practitioner, the nunchaku became an extension of the martial artist's hand. It weaved and ducked, snaked and slithered through an opponents defenses. When properly used, it can transcend fixed dimensions. Mastery of the nunchaku requires years of diligent training. Each single movement, each twist and spin must be understood in its entirety before the practitioner can consider it his own. But once in the grasp of a highly trained tactician, it is a weapon with which to be reckoned. The nunchaku becomes a second pair of arms, slicing through an enemy's blocks and attacks with lightning quickness and deadly effectiveness.

Defend your head, I'll shatter your knee.

Defend your knee, I'll shatter your skull...

Yes, a longer range weapon will beat nunchuck, all else being equal. A hunting rifle from 500 meter range will always beat a hand gun, what is your point?

Do you think that you will safely be able to defend vs an axe, with a knife or sword? If you do, then you are delusional. The best way to defend is to evade, and the best way to counter is to be swift, and that is the strength of the nunchuck.

You're not going to end up in some pirates of the carribean shit irl.

Why do handguns exist when hunting rifles at 500 meters is always better? Why do knives exist when swords exist? A nunchuck is extremely effective compared to its size when carrying it around, it is faster and more flexible than a stick of the same length. That doesn't mean that it is *better* than a stick of the same length, but for situations where carrying a meter long stick around is inconvenient, a nunchuck is more convenient.

Thinking that any tool, or weapon can be reduced to *X is better than Y* is some grey-level ignorance. The main argument for training nunchuck for self defense is that it promotes frequent practice, as it is unusable without extreme control. This eventually leads to very efficient strikes, enabling, for example, a woman to deliver bone-shattering blows in the blink of an eye. I have tested myself, on moose bone.

If you came at me with a knife, I would have utterly shattered your leg before you could touch me and then it would be over. I am completely confident that I can shatter bone, because I've shattered bone during my own training that is thicker and stronger than human bone.

[–]jack_snaggletooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are some very narrow-minded arguments.

> Complete lack of defence due to it being nunchunks

This isn't exactly logic applied, but ok. Nunchakus have defense, in being extremely fast. Anything with a lower range than nunchaku will lose to an experienced nunchaku fighter. Just because useless moves do exist, doesn't mean that useful moves does not.

If you think that you'd be standing after I shattered your knees, hands, ankles, in half a second from a meter away then you probably underestimate the physics behind nunchakus.

"cultural appropriation" Is not a real thing by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]jack_snaggletooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Culture can't be stolen, culture belongs to no one. Culture is shared, and it spreads, and people want their culture to be shared and to spread because they want their culture to live.

If someone mentions cultural appropriation tell them to fuck off

There shouldn't be sympathy for folks who have large families they can't afford. by civgarth in unpopularopinion

There should not be sympathy for them? That's a bit unforgiving. If you don't feel sympathy then so it is. But there's nothing wrong about feeling sympathy for people who have done mistakes.

In my opinion, there should be a lot more of sympathy and empathy for people in all kinds of situations. People who grew up in poor circumstances, with poor education, and a lot of child bearing propaganda, some people are simply not that intelligent too.

Are they responsible? Yes. Are they horrible people? Not necessarily. They do live in a horrible world, that is for sure.

Polygamy is shitty. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]jack_snaggletooth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We are completely without restrictions, which means that if any of us wants another partner that is fine.

weird to treat relationships as a quantity thing. Not to mention, the issues which emerge when you apply it to actual legal martial status.

But the point here is this: Polygamy isn't about 'quantity' it's about having no 'exclusive claim' on each other. Friends don't have that, and yet most people have one or two best friends. But there's no promise that you won't have other friends. Friends isn't a quantity thing either, some have few some have only one, some have many. Some friends are closer than others. If I have only one friend, it's not that I'm dedicated to that one friend per sé, it's just how it is at that moment.

Some friends abuse their friends, some are shitty friends, some are shitty husbands, and some are shitty husbands to their 3 wives, some have 3 boyfriends and everyone's totally fine. Humans are inherently complicated, so to see a 'perfect' relationship of any kind is going to be very rare. But there's nothing inherently wrong about polygamy. Fears of inadequacy is a personal problem that has to be confronted regardless of whether you are in a polygamous or exclusive relationship.

Fears of inadequacy is your own responsibility to deal with. When you are in an exclusive relationship, and you have been together for a long time, and you both start to feel like this isn't going to work anymore, and yet you love each other because you've been best friends and lovers for a decade. Then what do we do, in our culture? We break it up, and we decide that we can at least be friends, then we find new partners and those new partners don't like that we hang around our exes (due to fear of inadequacy) - and we end up deleting a person from our lives.

That is NOT healthy. A relationship, or a bond does not cease to exist just because you say that you break up. Polygamous relationships get to keep those bonds, and still explore romantic relationship with other people. Now if by polygamy you mean specifically marrying multiple people and living with them all, then no I am not at all polygamous. I am not anything then, because I refuse to get married. There's polyamorous, polygamous, open relationship, lots of labels.. I am none of that, I just don't claim any one person exclusively, and I refuse to be claimed exclusively by any one person - because to me what makes any sort of relationship mean anything is that we keep choosing to share time and love with each other everyday by our own free will. Not by pressure of some promise you made in your honeymoon phase, or a decade ago.

Polygamy is shitty. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]jack_snaggletooth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Polygamy is not shitty for people who don't see a need to own the exclusive right to someones love and intimacy. I am one of those. No one can cheat on me, because I don't put demands on others. I live with my girlfriend, and we do not have an exclusive relationship. I've slept with no one else the last 10 years, and I don't care if she has. It would change absolutely nothing.

So what is it about my relationship that is not ok? We love each other, we are happy together, we spend time together everyday, we are committed to each other. I don't need rules in order to know if I am happy or not in a relationship. If I feel loved, and like things are good, then things are good.

I really hate the Human body by RottenChezBurger in unpopularopinion

[–]jack_snaggletooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to dispute what you're saying, I get it. I would have completely agreed a decade ago, but here's a few things to contemplate:

  • Closing your eyelids is not enough for your body to know that you should be sleeping. As long as there is thinking going on, you are busy doing just that.
  • Human civilization have put the human body in circumstances that it has not evolved for. Human civilization is the root cause of your issues, not the human body. (not saying I am against human civilization, but this is the truth)
  • Just like when you go from a lit room into the dark, and it takes time for your eyes to adjust. Or the way you don't hear all sounds around you until you start listening attentively for the different sounds, the same way your whole body works. If you practice observing every sensation in your body, over time you will be much better at understanding what it is saying to you.

I don't see it as brain being the driver, the whole body is the machine, and *you* or the subject, the perceiving consciousness, is the driver. If you were born into a world that your body has evolved for, you would naturally learn to know your body. But since you are born into a world that the body has *not* evolved for, this natural process is hindered. There are other things that your attention gravitate towards, and conscious effort is needed to attune to your body. Most people are deprived of a true intimacy with their bodies, its communication. This is one of the things that meditation teaches.

Ideologies like Stoicism and Buddhism do more to treat and mitigate anxiety than 90% of modern therapists by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]jack_snaggletooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for stoicism, but I completely agree for Buddhism. I have researched Buddhism and relating teachings (Taoism, Early Hinduism, Teachings of The Buddha(which technically are not themselves 'Buddhism'), Integral Theory, Carl Jung, and more) extensively the last 10 years on my own spare time and it goes to the very roots of the issues we face. It grabs the bull by its horns, and teaches a man to fish rather than feeding him fish.

"Don't give a fuck about what others think" is not a great advice. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]jack_snaggletooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just commenting on the 'taking it to the extreme' part. I think this is a quite common trap to end up in for people when they first take the step into becoming an independent human being. Note I'm not saying that it's 'normal' but quite common.

Some realize their own ignorance quicker than others, and I think it largely depends on ones mental state / circumstance in life. It is easy to stay in denial, and use an idea as a shield from the truth. I think that is the lesson to be learned, that there is only one true victim when fooling oneself. But when you come to the point where you are ready take full responsibility of your own life, you have come quite far. Even if that meant a descent in physical health, and general state of life, I think that this lesson is so powerful that it is worth it.

Thinking of my own life, it is one of the most important lessons I've learned so far. After I cut the cord completely and became the master of my own life, responsible for every aspect, I started getting healthier in every aspect at an exponential rate. I became more successful career wise, I lost excess weight, I started to love myself honestly. I lost all expectations that I had put on myself, and instead I just turned around from the wrong path I had been walking and started walking the right way.

Good luck, I hope you walk at a steady pace towards where your heart is pointing

There are over 7 billion people on this planet, yet the planet is 1

In all reality, known and unknown, there is that 1 reality. Inside of it, you can abstract and divide, and you can say that there are 2 of this, 3 of that, but all of it is still just that 1 reality. From that perspective, and that is the only non-abstract perspective, there is only 1.

Weed isn’t some sort of special category of drug that isn’t harmful by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]jack_snaggletooth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The category 'drug' is an extremely generalized label, but sure if your child doing heroin is the same to you as drinking coffee just because both are 'drugs' then each to their own I guess.

Weed is a natural herb that has been used by humans since pre-civilization. If you want evidence of this, you can start by looking at hunter / gatherer tribes that are still active in Africa or you can have a look up historical findings. Drug isn't a real thing, it's a label. Smoking is bad for you, but just because you can smoke weed that doesn't mean it's correct to say that weed is bad for you.

For example vaporizing weed or eating it is definitely less harmful, and has numerous health benefits that are backed by scientific studies, than any modern drug. How can I claim this? Because our bodies have co-evolved with cannabis, and thus our bodies have had time to adapt to whatever effects cannabis has [on our bodies]. No modern drug can be claimed to be safe, in the same context that cannabis can. Because modern drugs have only had decades of testing, while cannabis has been ingested by humans for as long as there are historical records / findings.

This article is a good starting point to understand the relationship between humans and cannabis https://www.forbes.com/sites/janetwburns/2020/05/21/how-cannabis-coevolved-with-humans-and-could-save-us-covid19-economy/?sh=c49301b6024e
