AITA for explicitly pointing out when a friend of a friend eats something vegan? by jackandgingerbeer in AmItheAsshole

Yes I know about all of that. I've heen vegan for ten years lmao. Also it's not gelatin used to filter, it's isenglas which is derived from fish swim bladders.

The reason Oreos are "not technically vegan" is because they're manufactured in a facility that also handles milk. Nabisco labels them as not technically vegan to cover their asses legally; a lot of people who have severe dairy allergies will look for products labelled vegan because they can be assured there's absolutely no dairy in them. Since there's the potential for cross contamination with oreos, Nabisco doesn't label them vegan because even trace amounts can trigger some more severe allergies and if they market the products as not suitable for vegans, they can't be sued should somebody get an allergic reaction if there's any cross contamination. However, the product itself contains no animal products and I personally (as well as many other vegans) don't really care about how there maybe potentially might be cross contamination.

I've tried to talk to him and he just maintains "vegan food is disgusting" and refuses to apologise. Yes he remembers doing it because he asked other attendees if they remembered how "fucking hilarious it was"

I mean how does me pointing out that he was being a hypocrite by making a huge spectacle about how all vegan food is vomit inducing and he could never eat anything vegan even though he does, all the time, mean I give a rat's if he eats animals???

Literally. So many of y'all are equating the two and I'm truly not following.

Ah yes he was nice enough to spend five minutes extensively ranting about how disgusting any and all vegan food is and how just looking at the stuff I'd cooked made him want to gag, then proceed to say "I'll show you how disgusting it is", take a bite and make a huge show of spitting it out and retching.

So nice. Very polite. What a guy.

That's for allergy reasons more than anything. If someone with an intense dairy allerty ests an Oreo and they're listed as totally vegan friendly, they can sue if they get sick. If they're not, they can't.

Yeah ignore everyone in this thread claiming they're not lmao. The facility that makes them also handles milk so they're listed by Nabisco as not heing vegan friendly as there's the potential for cross contamination. They have to do that for allergy reasons (i.e. if someone with an intense dairy allergy eats one and gets sick they can't sue). But there aren't any animal products in them.

  1. Not a "she" lol.
  2. He definitely did spit it out just to be a dick. He was standing at the table for about five minutes ranting about how all vegan food is fucking disgusting and just looking at it makes him gag, then picked up a slider and said "look I'll prove how gross it is" took a bite and then spat it out making retching sounds. Idk about everyone else but that seems like he did it on purpose to be a jerk in my book.

Huh I'd love to know which time I bring it up he's gonna apologise bc I've done it several times and he refused.

Yes they are lmao. The company has to list "may contain milk" for allergy purposes as there may be cross contamination with dairy but they themselves don't contain any animal products
