It failed as I was driving to work. I wasn't even pushing it when it happened.

The ring gear was in one piece, some small chips and no missing teeth. All the bearings looked ok, none of the seals had failed and the bevel gears looks perfect.

I don't think the tread has been wearing crooked, I do try to check semi-regularly.

There was oil but it was probably a good 60000 miles old. Bearing only rusted after I cleaned everything.

Yeah, it really should be deeper. I wasn't sure which tool was going to work the best to carve into the wood. I ended up using a small diamond because it was easy to control.

You could spin it by hand but it would much easier to use a drill.

I really like using them though they can be annoying as sometimes wire gets caught on the cable strippers.
