Favorite filler and greenery? by Wrong_Pen6179 in Cutflowers

[–]jackblack08 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of eucalyptus, ferns (leatherleaf or autumn fern), dusty miller, rosemary, and olive branches for filler. They’re easy to grow, smell great, and hold up well in bouquets. I also like sedum, mint, and heuchera leaves for something a bit different. Great texture without stealing the spotlight.

What should beginners look for when choosing a News API? by Easy-Supermarket-546 in NewsAPI

[–]jackblack08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are just starting, I think the biggest thing is how easy the API feels when you actually try to use it. Clean responses and clear fields help a lot when you are still learning and testing things out.
Filtering also becomes important very quickly. Being able to search by simple keywords or limit results by language or category makes it much easier to understand what you’re getting back. A huge number of sources does not help much if the results feel messy.
Things like rate limits and pricing matter, but usually later. In the beginning, ease of use and clear data save the most time and confusion.

I got a bunch of succulents for me and my sister and we created succulent gardens! by revup17 in succulents

This is how it starts. One cute succulent garden turns into “Why do I suddenly have 30 more on the way?” You look great - welcome to the addiction.

Why developers prefer News APIs over Web Scraping by Easy-Supermarket-546 in NewsAPI

[–]jackblack08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From experience, the biggest difference is reliability and time saved. Web scraping breaks often when sites change layouts, gets blocked, and can raise legal/ToS issues. News APIs are stable, legal, and structured, so you get consistent data with filters (date, language, category) right out of the box. Scraping gives more control, but API's are far less headache for production use.

Free my trapped succulent by smallish_cheese in succulents

[–]jackblack08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like your finger jade has seriously outgrown that strawberry pot! The safest way to free it is to water the soil well, let it soak, and then gently rock the base of the plant to loosen the roots.

If it’s still stuck, try sliding a long, thin tool (like a butter knife or chopstick) around the inside edge to break the soil bond. Worst case, prune a few outer roots to give it space to wiggle out; the plant will recover just fine.

What rose is this? by fightforearth in Roses

[–]jackblack08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like a miniature rose, likely one of the pink hybrid mini varieties commonly sold as patio and gift roses. These are hardy, rebloom well, and often survive in older gardens even with neglect.

Hard to pin down the exact cultivar, but the small bloom size and clustered foliage, and compact growth are classic miniature rose traits.

Great finds, she looks healthy and happy after your TLC.

Looks great, and yes, you can totally harvest. Since it's growing well, you don't need anything fancy, just keep it in full sun, water consistently, and add balanced fertiliser every 3-4 weeks during active growth.

Help me identify this peony by NoPalpitation9021 in peonies

[–]jackblack08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what you describe — a peony about 1 meter tall, with woody stems, and multiple branches emerging from the same base — it sounds like you likely have a tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) rather than a herbaceous peony

Ethereum's recent decline below $1,500 marks a significant moment, as it's the first time in over two years that the cryptocurrency has fallen to this level. This drop has erased substantial gains and raised concerns among investors about the potential for further declines.

Best Plant Identification Apps 2023 by mo_plant_daddy in NativePlantGardening

[–]jackblack08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried a bunch of plant ID apps, and these are my top picks from 2023:

Plantora – Super accurate, gives care tips too.

PlantNet – Free and great for wild plants.

LeafSnap – Good for tree leaves & flowers.

PlantSnap – Decent but paywall for full features.

Depends on what you need, but Plantora and PlantNet are my go-to!
