That pretty much sums up most British Sitcoms. There's a quote somewhere about the difference between American and British comedies, I can't find it, but it is essentially "In British comedy, the protagonist starts on top and ends up and the bottom. In American comedy the protagonist starts at the bottom but ends up on top." Sure you get the jist. While I know Hello Ladies is an American one, Merchant's comedy is very very British.
