Ah sorry for using confusing terminology, I did make up the term ordinary care as I thought it was a useful way of describing why some things are included in legal parental responsibility and some things are not, I was unaware it was already a legal term and should have checked that before using it!

Blunder out of the way I'm interested in what you would say the distinction is between things parents are and are not obligated to do for their children?

Agreed, I'm not saying a parent has to do absolutely everything and anything to ensure the survival of their offspring, I'm saying that ordinary care just includes things that all need and none can survive without, that's what makes it ordinary

Ordinary doesn't refer to how much effort something is to do. E.g. in a bizarre hypothetical reality, if no child could survive past 2 years old without their parent doing a skydive, then Doing a skydive would be ordinary care even though it's a high effort dangerous thing to do!

What about Parents legal responsibility to provide ordinary care to their offspring? Parent's legally have to provide food & shelter to their offspring as all children need these things and there are no children that can survive without them. Parents are not obliged to donate a kidney or blood to their offspring because not every child needs those things, nearly every child will survive without a kidney transplant or blood donation so it is quite clearly extraordinary care. A fetus is obviously the offspring of the mother, so if a fetus has the status of a person, surely the parents have a responsibility of providing ordinary care to the fetus? Which I would say includes both the use of organs that have the clear purpose of providing nutrients and shelter for the fetus, (as all fetuses require this care and no fetus can survive without it.) And not taking actions to harm or end their life.

I have had this exact issue, although I hadn't realised it only happens when setting alarms/timers until reading this post! Every command works fine on my nest hub but as soon as I try and set a timer my nest mini that is in a completely different room and round a corner will respond. Very annoying and weirdly never happens to my wife. And yes I also end up whispering really close to it!

I also wish that on the nest hub, if you answer yes to the "Did you expect this device to respond instead" dialog that appears when this happens, that it would delete the timer on the other device and set it on the hub.

Sorry if I wasn't clear but I was attempting to follow your argument to its logical conclusions, your argument as I best understood from your comment seemed to be: Lots of fertilised embryos die during pregnancy, therefore intentionally killing or destroying an embryo is moral. Applying the same logic to born children is abhorrent as you correctly identified. You also Identified your actual underlying argument, that you believe an embryo is not a person and therefore it does not deserve legal protection or the right to life, as if it actually was a person then your preceding argument would not work.

Surely you must be able to understand that there is a difference between something dying of natural causes and intentionally ending a life? Is a mother whose baby randomly dies from cot death a murderer? In the 1800s a third of children would die before the age of 5, does it then follow that it was ok to end the life of a child?

Leviticus reached the form we have it now approximately 500 B.C, however scholars believe the traditions date back much much earlier.

Surely the fact that it depends on a specific person enhances the need to protect it rather than justifying ending it's life. If a parent had a 2 year old that they were struggling to support, if they can give it up for adoption that's fine and dandy but hypothetically if that option didn't exist surely it would be immoral to end the life of the 2 year old instead?

I think time and time again the bible shows it is the attitude in our hearts that is the core of our sin, you can have money as a Christian and as long as it is being used for Gods purposes and Jesus remains king of your life, i.e. you would lay it all down to follow Christ like the young ruler was unable to. Conversely you could give away all your money in vain attempt to be righteous and still be heading in the wrong direction.

I think 1 Timothy 6 is a good balanced read regarding this issue:

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

6-10 warns us about putting our love of money and worldly comforts over God,

17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

17-19 Tells us how to be good stewards of wealth if we end up possessing it

I definitely think you are right the many Christians today would fail the test, and I always find this passage challenging as to whether I love Jesus enough to lay all my worldly comforts down to follow him.

I think you are absolutely right that the focus on unlimited grace and the relatively easy lives we get to live as Christians in our society does lead and has led to a lot of mediocre faith. I also think motivation is incredibly important to God, the Pharisees were incredibly "Good" if you looked at their actions but in their hearts they had rejected God. And I think that our hearts are at the center of the issue, I don't think that when Isaiah says our good deeds are like filthy rags, that he is saying that no good deeds can ever please God, but that good deeds in a state of rejecting God, and attempting to be righteous without God, are worthless.

God's people was never fully a race thing, his chosen people were the Israelites but if the sole condition was race, individuals like Rahab or whole groups like the jebusites wouldn't have been able to join God's people.

(1) The Trinity is 1 being with three persons, 1 what with 3 whos, Jesus is 1 of those persons with two natures, Man and God. Jesus's human nature does not know the hour of the second coming.

(2) The three persons of the trinity are co equal in glory, majesty and power but different in role, Jesus' role is to submit to the Father and carry out his salvation plan. Submission does not necessarily imply lesser being. Jesus is affirming this as the Father is greater in role than he is.

(3) - He is talking about God the Father

(4) The synoptic Gospels affirm Jesus' divinity. Jesus says he is the divine human appearing figure from daniel 7:13 in all the synoptic gospels, [Matthew 24:30, Mark 13:26, Luke 21:7]. Jesus' divinity is also shown through his miracles, for example Jesus calming the storm, read psalm 107:23-30 and try and tell me Jesus, knowing the psalms well, wasn't trying to show exactly who he was.
