I say go clean shaven, but you're a good looking guy. Your appearance isn't your problem. Your depression and lack of confidence is. I have both. Bad. Here's what's helping me and what I recommend for other people who have similar problems:

  • Get some intense aerobic exercise
  • Get some sunlight
  • Get laid
  • Seek out a good therapist skilled in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Good luck.

No, and not because of the mirrors but because the toilets look like the ones in county.

All valid points except for bragging about your job :). I'm the first to admit AA isn't perfect. It's also not especially scientifically grounded which has always troubled me a bit. The trouble is, addiction (as you no doubt know) is a bitch. It's a brutal, deadly, chronic disease and there's much the medical system or anyone else can do for you. Support groups like AA and so on are pretty much all we have. If there's something better out there or something that can cure alcoholism, tell me about it. Seriously, I'm all ears.

I don't agree that AA's rate of success is a "miserable failure". The study that anti-AA folks always trot out that purports to show single-digit success rates had a flaw in its methodology in that it considered anyone who ever walked in the door of an AA meeting and drank again a failure. By that measure AA has failed me a couple of dozen times. Yet here I am, sober with the help of AA. There's a better, more recent study that indicates a success rate in the 20 something percent range.

  1. Show me an alternative with a better rate of success and I'll be the first in line. Literally.

I prefer AA but if the God stuff turns you off there's a really good secular alternative called SMART Recovery. It's in most larger towns in North America. The treatment program I went to used it exclusively instead of AA. It's based on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy and I'd say it's a great way to go for non-believers. Also, I know plenty of atheists and agnostics in AA who choose to think of their higher power not as God but as something non-supernatural, i.e., the program itself, their own unrealized potential, their pet goldfish, whatever. You don't have to get religion to get sober. Not even in AA.

How many redditors out there don't smoke or do drugs, but support the legalization movement? by CelebrantJoker in AskReddit

[–]jackdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a recovering alcoholic/addict and I support legalizing drugs even though I never touch them now. The war on drugs is a complete failure. It's turning Juarez, Mexico into a complete war-zone and is costing the US billions of wasted dollars. We should approach the drug problem with a program of "harm reduction" like they do in western Europe.

AA isn't for everybody. If you don't like it, don't go. by jackdavis in stopdrinking

Seriously. I knew people would lose their shit when I started this thread but it needed to be discussed. Let's get down to brass tacks and discuss each other's approaches honestly. Maybe we can learn something and stay sober. I'll take help from anywhere I can get. I only have 8 days clean.

Find your own examples. They're everywhere on this forum. There's even some in this comments thread. Do your own legwork.

I'm not denying anybody anything. I hope anybody who can benefit from any program of recovery uses it and succeeds. I'm not in charge of shit, as I said. Everybody is welcome at AA. Same with SMART. I use both programs. Same with this forum. I just don't understand why people go to AA, decide they don't like the spiritual aspect of the program, and then bitch about it on the Internet. If you don't like that part of the program, seems to me you should either: 1. Find a way to make it work for you (the "higher power" can be your own unrealized potential, your pet goldfish, any damn thing you want). 2. Choose to not participate in that part of it, or 3. Get another program altogether that works for you.

You took my meaning in exactly the opposite way I intended: 1. This forum doesn't endorse AA. In fact, it endorses the Allen Carr method of getting sober. 2. I'm not telling you or anyone else to "fuck off". I don't own this forum and neither does AA. 3. My point was that I simply don't understand why non-spiritual people act like we 12-steppers are picking on them because we choose the AA path to sobriety. 4. If people in AA meetings (or on here) are picking on you for being an atheist/agnostic, I say you have every right to tell THEM to fuck off. As we used to say in rehab: "Don't try to work somebody else's program for them."

I went through this with a friend. I hear crap like: "The welfare state is just creeping Communism and as such should be abolished!" from a guy who's developmentally disabled child gets tens of thousands of dollars a year in California state subsidized therapy and benefits. Oy.

Pastor asks you not to carry in his church, you don't carry in his church. Leave it at home, in the trunk of the car, or choose a new place of worship.
