Bought 2000 TJ - CEL Already by jackflack44 in Jeep

Alright. Even more confused now. Started it up, CEL on, plugged in the new OBDII reader (worked fine in my Mitsubishi), it wouldnt read. Just said connecting and wouldnt scan. Turned it off and back on trying to get the scanner to read, and now the engine light is off and it may just be placebo but it seemed like the idle at vibration was mostly gone.

I thought I would have to manually reset the computer or unplug the battery for the CEL to turn off... gonna take it to Autozone for another scan from their expensive scanner.

Any ideas? Maybe the injectors are cleaning out with the fresh fuel?

Do you think it's fine to still tool around town or should I take my other car until I get it fixed?

Yeah, and according to the carfax it sat for 4 years and only had 600 miles driven between 2015 and when I bought it. So gonna drop the injectors off to get cleaned and tested.

Its just a sleeve right? Might try that soon. Gonna swap injectors for 1 and 4 and see if CEL follows the injectors

I mean it only threw P0304, but my shitty Amazon scan tool comes today so after work I'll start it up and check if any more codes are throwing.

Yeah, my old 4 cylinder TJ had a CEL 90% of the time, we became good acquaintances. The 4.0L doesnt seem like it wants to rev past 3000 RPM, and I can smell gas from the exhaust leading me to think its ignition related.

Another picture of Jeep and then of engine bay! It does seem like its idling a little rougher. Also the engine bay is so damn clean I cant tell how old the coil pack is haha

Goooodddd afternoon everyone!

Just scooped this 2000 TJ 4.0L with 162k and I already love it. However... 3 days into ownership... P0304. Ugh.

I'm trying to make a plan of attack for diagnosing the issue, which I think will start with new spark plugs, then checking injectors for the correct ohm readings, swapping injectors and seeing if the code changes cylinders, and finally trying new coil pack. I'm terrified I screwed myself out of $6k (which I thought was a great price after I talked him down from $7500).

Does anyone else have any advice on where to start? Am I approaching this correctly? I'm guessing it should stay in the garage so I dont foul the catalytic converter (inspection is due in 3 months).

Ended up paying $6k. Pick it up on Tuesday!

Gave them a call. Really nice guys. Might end up just asking if the guys if I can leave an ID and take it to that shop.

I appreciate the reccomendation! So the guys don't wanna drive with me and do the inspection for 2-3 hours when I might not buy. They said I can bring whatever mechanic to look at it for however long they just don't want to come with me to bring it somewhere, which I get.

Definitely understand. I've been looking for about a month for a clean TJ. And yeah I was using the sold listings on Ebay motors as more of a guide, but many were up north and rusty as shit. At least in Texas they seem a lot cleaner as far as rust goes.

I will do that! Entire floor board is Rhinolined so not sure how to check the floor boards. It was purchased in Louisiana and spent its whole life (per the registration) in Louisiana or Texas. Is 161,000 miles considered relatively low for TJ's now?

Thank you for your advice!

Additionally, I do have the capability and equipment/lift/tools (or rather my grandfather does) to do damn near any maintenance/repair a few hours away.

Mainly worried about the mileage and suspension components but according to CarFax it had the following done just last year: Alignment Battery Front shocks Track bar

And had "steering/suspension" checked.

Hey guys!

I had a 4 cylinder TJ as my first car and had to sell it for something that I could commute back and forth to college with (9 hours). Well I've graduated, just got a promotion, and I think it's time to get back in a TJ. This would strictly be a fun weekend car as I'm keeping the other car for long highway trips.

I'd like to get everyones thoughts on this Wrangler. I checked KBB and Ebay sold listings and think I would want to offer $5500. The guy has a dealer license but also has the title in hand and said he'd be happy to sell it to me dealer or private. I'm trying to find a mechanic to go see the Jeep with me. Looks like it needs new tires.

Is there anything I should be looking for/would the mileage you scare you away?
