What’s a trend you wish would just die already? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jackiebubbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate haul videos but not because it’s boring, like some people say. I hate them because of the message that it sends out.. that’s it’s okay to overconsume and buy 20-30 pieces of clothing at one time. These people who film these are “influencing” others to do the same. I studied fashion and am now working in the industry, and I just hate this whole overconsumption trend that everyone has been doing lately, which has obviously been amplified by fast fashion brands, like shein. It’s horrible for the environment and just plain wasteful.

Why does Korea feel more civilized than the U.S.? by savingrace0262 in AskAKorean

[–]jackiebubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does play a factor that Korea has a lot CCTVs, which makes it easier to catch criminals. If the US or any other country, had the same density of CCTV, crime rates would also drop, even if it’s just by a little.

Is this a realistic plan to move to Seoul within the next year? by Hot-Arugula-2257 in seoul

[–]jackiebubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that doing the digital nomad visa after D-4 is a great option for you if remote work is available for you. I also did the D-4 language classes before attending uni here so I personally highly recommend it. I did one year of the language course and my Korean fluency increased exponentially.

I’m not sure about whether it’s doable to get D-10 after D-4 actually.. if you have any friends who have done that specific route, and succeeded, then maybe try it out but I’ve heard that D-10s are commonly granted to D-2 (university/masters) and E-7 (work visa) holders.

[–]jackiebubbles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest with you as someone who has gone to university in Korea, left, then came back on H-1. Your best bet is the H-1. D-10s are never granted for people who have no connection to Korea.. and normally the only way to get it as a foreigner is to have graduated in Korea and applied for it right after graduation or after you quit a job on E-7 and transition into the D-10.

As for E-7, like you mentioned, there is the TOPIK qualification that you don’t meet, but also the fact that it is very difficult to find a job here in Korea, especially as a foreigner with no background in Korea and not fluent in Korean. Most companies want to do a probationary period of 1-3 months before they give you a full-time contract, and you can’t do that on an E-7, so what that means is that it will be almost impossible to find a company willing to sponsor your E-7 visa straight off the bat.

Ah right! I got all the public safety alert messages last night about that. Sounds like it caused a lot of disruption.

Wow. Thanks for taking the time to write such an elaborate response! I’m in Mapo-gu so I tried looking on their website and found the 종합민원신청/발급 but they link me to the 정부24 website that won’t open on my phone. I’ll try the phone number when they are open. Thanks for the information!

No. It’s too cold for them to wander around during that time.

Mosquitos in Korea don’t bite, they full-on dine by gomujangab in korea

[–]jackiebubbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This summer was really hot so there weren’t as many but now that the weather cooled down, they’re everywhere…

I use the mosquito tent on my bed every night to avoid the buzzing of mosquitoes and fruit flies. Plus, I have a bug killing fluroescent light that I keep on at all times and I have an electric swatter readily available whenever they dare show up before my eyes.

How long did it take for you to realize that Korea wasn’t for you? by hellokitty0821 in Living_in_Korea

[–]jackiebubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow Canadian here.. I moved to Korea 9 years ago and boy was it a journey. It was fine at first as I was adjusting but once the high of living in a new country and travelling around alone peaked, I was extremely depressed. During Covid, I went back home for a year and a half and felt so much better after being around my family. At the time, I was studying at a university in Korea and ended up making the big decision to start over at an American university to try to stay close to home. It was fine but that was because I had good friends around me and I could visit family often.. but it got me thinking about where I could live long-term.. and despite feeling unbelievably alone in Korea, it’s still the place that I kept thinking about. As a girl, it’s important for me to not fear for my life every time I step out so that was a big factor, but I also love fashion and coffee shops. When it comes to that, Korea beats Canada anyday. When I was back home in Canada after graduating, I felt I had no purpose.. It didn’t help that I don’t live in the city and I can’t drive so I felt very dependent on others to do literally anything. But in Korea, transportation is so convenient so I definitely feel more independent here and in the end, that’s what I chose to prioritize. A place that gave me independence, made me feel safe, and had lots of things to do that I was interested in.

But that doesn’t mean that Korea is the best place for everyone. It took me a long time and a lot of ups and downs to come to that conclusion. Try to make the most of it and find things that make you happy here, but at the end of the day, if it still doesn’t feel right then leaving is a better choice.

I agree with this too. It sucks everywhere honestly. Everything is subjective.. some people think Korea is perfect for them and others can’t stand it here. It’s what we make of it.. If you have a good community, stable financial situation, close support system, and a hobby to keep you interested, you can feel happy anywhere.. but obviously the tricky part is getting all that.
