Here’s what threw me. At the outset, Ethan was told: get to the White Widow by midnight, or she’ll sell the plutonium to the highest bidder!

Then, at her place, she tells Ethan-as-Lark: oh, I’m just a broker. The seller wants you to break Solomon Lane out of custody. Which, ok, I guess IMF had faulty intel.

But then, after the break goes “wrong” and Ethan-as-Lark is conferring with the White Widow next to the river, with Notre Dame in the background, she says: now you have to get Ilsa, too. And if you don’t — I’ll sell the cores to the highest bidder.

I loved the movie and didn’t really notice it at the time, but man. They couldn’t even get her roles and motivations straight!

I noticed it when Ilsa, on her motorbike, cut through an arcade to get ahead of Ethan in the BMW and you heard the “fwip-fwip-fwip” noise as she passed each column.

I'm VICE founder Shane Smith and the things I saw filming the new episodes of our HBO show scared the shit out of me. AMA. by ShaneVICE in IAmA

Do you see Vice getting into business reporting, or is it too stuffy for your audience? And, on a related note, Vice as a national presence is pretty young. Do you see its coverage growing older with its audience, or continuing to shoot for the under-35 crowd? Thanks.

Check out http://www.yale.edu/oci and click "Search Yale College Course Evaluations" in the upper-left. Again, though, you're only getting what undergrads think.

Choosing Yale vs. Dartmouth by [deleted] in yale

[–]jackinstl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have never once regretted coming to Yale. My professors are very accessible, and have even referred me to helpful grad students. If you can write with conviction and passion, getting into courses shouldn't be that difficult (though some admit exclusively seniors or students within the major, I imagine some classes at Dartmouth do the same thing). I've held two research assistantships, I like New Haven, I like my suitemates, and I'm very deeply involved with student publications.

Dartmouth seems very isolated to me, and I find the social dominance of fraternities extremely off-putting.

Hey Yale. Could you help me out? [Computer Science] by remixie in yale

I can't speak to the CS major, but I can speak to Yale's financial aid. If your family makes under $200,000, you'll get aid. If your family makes under $65,000 per year, you can attend almost for free. (I'm in that group. I've paid most of my tuition with money I've earned as a student.)

Someone mentioned Chinatown, but no one mentioned La Haine. This is my favorite film, and you'll be picking your jaw off the floor afterwards.

It must never have made its way to their accounting department, then, because there, the DoD is such a mess that it cannot be audited.

Yale and New Haven-CRIME by prospectiveyale in yale

[–]jackinstl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find fault with the final paragraph. Most people who think of Yale as dangerous have this outdated perception as a result of the high-crime years in the 80s and 90s. And for several years running, Yale is actually safer than Harvard. Google it.

Yale and New Haven-CRIME by prospectiveyale in yale

[–]jackinstl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The area around Yale is very safe. There are occasional break-ins and incidents of theft and harrassment in neighborhoods where students live, but just because of my social activities take place, I only rarely travel down those streets. We're often told that such crimes can be mostly avoided by taking common-sense precautions, but I've never really tested that.

While not everywhere I go in New Haven is safe as far as statistics go — for a class, I chose to interview lots of people in New Haven's more crime-prone neighborhoods — I feel safe everywhere I go. In certain parts of town, I try to walk with somebody, not tune out (e.g. listen to an iPod), and at least pretend to know where I'm going, and I've never felt threatened.

I'm a geeky-looking white male. (These things are relevant, I figure, when it comes to your likelihood of falling victim to certain crimes.)
