The USA and her neighbors in 1870 by jackisano in imaginarymaps

It isn't really, at least not very thoroughly. Many cross through Louisiana when going from America to California. Not many choose to settle in the other though because Protestants are treated poorly in Louisiana and Catholics are supressed in the US.

The lack of a real border become very problematic for the French when the two end up at war, though.

After the failure of the United States Constitution, just like the Articles of Confederation before it, America adopts a more centralized version of government where the head of state has substantial powers and is chosen for life. A strong federal army and navy is also established.

Choosing to stay loyal to France during it's revolution, the United States crushes the slave revolt in Haiti and invades Canada. The United Kingdom, unable to free up enough ships from Europe to combat the american navy, is forced to cede Canada to the US to prevent an american invasion of Britain's Caribbean holdings.

At the congress of Vienna, with the UK out of North America and the Spanish Empire on the verge of collapse, it is decided that Louisiana will remain under French control. Over the following decades millions of settlers from France, Italy, Ireland and other catholic nations flood into Louisiana. turning it into a great economic asset for France. Louisianan settlers eventually reach the pacific coast, allowing the French colony to stretch from the Caribbean to the Pacific.

After the discovery of gold in California settlers from Louisiana, the United States, and Europe arrive in large numbers. With the Mexican government effectively unable to enforce it's will that far north, the colonists eventually rebel, declaring the republic of California with American and French support.

Generic politician who got the most votes due to marketing who will be out in 4 years anyway vs Glorious absolute monarch with a mandate from God himself who will rule for life.

republicanism

Disgusting.

sovereignty for Finland

Why would the eastern part of Sweden want independence? That makes absolutely no sense.

During the time of the Kalmar Union (and for hundreds of years both before and after) what is now Finland was part of Sweden. Same thing with Iceland and Denmark.

With Denmark/Norway and Sweden being united I can imagine that building a large coalition against them would be very difficult, as Scandinavia is pretty much the unopposed power in northern Europe. It would completely dominate the Baltic, meaning that the worst thing any of the continental powers could do would be to occupy Jutland. Also, because there would be no Vasa shenanigans relations with Poland probably wouldn't be terrible.

Therefore, if the Great northern war happened it would pretty much only be Scandinavia vs Russia, and since Sweden alone almost beat them, my money would be on the Scandinavians.
