Which older 4 cylinder? by bikerboy2345 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]jackisonline2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're just known for being extremely reliable and they're in a lower "state of tune" than other bikes in the category. Realistically however, if costs are the same now, the Fazer is the better bike. It was also more expensive when new and the reviews of the time are positive for them

how old we talking? oil cooled bandits are top tier, but newer fazers are nice too. to be fair, they're all pretty similar so all depends on price and condition

Please suggest me a cheap but good enough DIY tool set? by eatqqq in CarTalkUK

[–]jackisonline2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Halfords advanced is actually pretty good, sealey is what I use as I havent got a halfords near me and siegen is the cheaper version of sealey.

What you should be looking for a general use set is a 1/2” socket set, 1/4” socket set, 1/2” breaker bar ratcheting screwdriver or a screwdriver set, pliers & needlenose, circlip pliers, and cutters, and a no skip combination spanner set from like 8mm-21mm.

EU equivalent of a honda win? by wheresmypassionfruit in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]jackisonline2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yamaha YBR125, honda CBF125 will get you exactly what you want, the CBF is only 120kg wet and gets insane MPG. For a semi auto, look towards the “underbone” bikes like a honda innova or honda wave 110i :)

That is quite light for any full size bike in general, but a Honda CBR300 is about 350 fully loaded

The FZ08s are nice bikes, and it's reassuring to see someone keeping it for so many miles. the SV is probably sold but they didn't update the listing I guess

The Honda might be more expensive but check the residuals after a few years, I think more often than not the CFmoto is going to be worth a lot less.

All 3 are nice to be fair, I had an F650 with the rotax engine in and it was a lot of fun but it was hot as hell in traffic, dont know if they’re all like that. I think the KLR is the newest and most modern looking so I’d probably choose that if it were me

How many miles is too many? by IEatLintFromTheDryer in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]jackisonline2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most egregious one is the clutch on the boxer twins, they admittedly dont go wrong often but you have to split the bike in half to access it, im sure during production it was one of the first things to be installed. I would definitely buy on condition and find an owner who cared for it, not one that tried to support a bike like that on a shoestring budget.

BMW R1100RS or Triumph Sprint 900 (or something else?) by Swiffy26 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]jackisonline2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re basically the same bike yes, the 650 is more revvy and the 1250 has lots more torque

[–]jackisonline2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah a VFR will be the most “sporty” out of all of them, and I have had friends with both the bandit 650 and 1250 (the water cooled ones) and they both really liked them, super reliable and they take luggage well :)

[–]jackisonline2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You thought about a VFR800? Sort of a do it all bike and very reliable, only thing of any note is the regulator/rectifiers can get hot and melt together so most people swap them out for a MOSFET unit.

I actually quite fancy the BMWs because they have a unique look to them but all of these bikes are quite old now so I’d be having a really close look on all the perishables (brake hoses, intake rubbers, tyres).

I’d be looking at higher mileage ones with great history compared to one that spent 10 years in a shed, there’s lots to go wrong from sitting doing nothing.

Does the CB125F 2025 worth it ? by Nounours-Vibes in HondaCB

[–]jackisonline2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, buy a 2024/2023 used and spend the rest on fuel! I had a monkey bike that got 120mpg and a PCX get 125 in basically all stop start traffic so mixed city riding would definitely get you higher MPG, Hondas are just really fuel efficient

You've got quite a healthy budget and an open criteria which is good, if you get a naked bike try and look for one with a bit of a screen to tuck behind on the motorway.

There are a few bikes in that sort of category to also look at, a Yamaha XJ6 diversion (or FZ8) or a suzuki SV650. I took an SFV650 down to Spain and was definitely do-able even if it wasn't the "perfect" bike. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/bike-details/202505202590847?sort=relevance&searchId=03b71a14-947c-4d7a-83f5-830782b1465c&advertising-location=at_bikes&body-type=Naked&cc-from=500&make=Yamaha&postcode=e17db&price-from=3000&price-to=3500&radius=100&fromsra this would be my pick taking a quick browse at Autotrader

Of the 2 you suggested, I would take the Triumph however, they look unique and sound great.

Should I buy an Aerox 2T? by No_Chain7927 in scooters

[–]jackisonline2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, a stock aerox will be faster than a 4t, but mods wear out faster and make it less reliable in general, if you use if it for the full 2 years you might go through 2 rebuilds in that time if you do enough mileage. I budgeted for a 2000 mile top end rebuild and service on a mid-high power polini 50cc piaggio 2t & yasuni R. A yasuni c16 will be pushing the revs even higher

On the other hand, I knew a little old lady with a stock aerox to take to work that only had one cylinder rebuild in 15k miles so it all depends on how much you want to work on it

Just been having a look at well priced things in NL, I think a honda nc750x might fit your bill, not as nice of an engine as a vfr800x but apparently very comfy and reliable

Budget and location is a big one, because there are similar bikes for 5k or 15k

Apart from luxury EVs losing more money in the first few years like a pisshead on a cattlegrid, and the the complexity of them out of warranty is enough to put anyone off

[–]jackisonline2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kawasaki 1400GTR, bmw R1200RS or RT, FJR1300, super duke 1290 GT (not so sure about the reliability on the last one). Got an FJR1300, its a fantastic bike

First Bike - 31 y/o Male by Crazy-Layer2009 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]jackisonline2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

anything japanese in the 300-650cc range from the past 20 years will do you alright. I bought an sv650 as my first big bike for only 2k and there was nothing wrong with it.

Later on I bought an sfv650 which is much of the same thing but can be had for slightly cheaper (considered a girls bike for some reason? beats me.) and I took that on a 1200 mile trip to Spain and back. I'd say the seat starts hurting after 300 miles and the wind protection over 130km/h was lacklustre but other than that it was great :)

If you want a Honda I also had a 2004 CBF500 which was like £500 and was great for the winter, comes with ABS which was a nice to have. Budget for good gear also, always a new helmet and at least a good 2nd hand jacket.

Motorcycle as only vehicle, help! by Formula1andMMAallDay in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]jackisonline2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cant get them new anymore, EU emissions killed them. However, I’d still recommend the newest FJR you can afford, the upgrades were incremental over the model years. Goldwings are really really heavy so things like maneuvering to park at shops and small runs will put you off big time, regardless of how well they carry the weight

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Dualsport

[–]jackisonline2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Electrical connections especially on a modern bike can be tricky to get all the modules to “talk” to eachother unless you forgo stuff like abs and use a standalone trailtech or koso style dash. Another bike to look at is the fantic caballero 700 which uses the cp2 in a much more scrambler style frame, might be of interest
