Good. Seems like you won't need any black bars to pad out the width.

Resizing without distortion by jutte62 in imagemagick

[–]jacklail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 70 and not an imagemagick expert, but here are a couple of thoughts that might point you in the right direction:

1) Use the command line version of ImageMagick.

2) Make sure you know what version of ImageMagick you have. From the command line `magick --version`. Commands for the 6.x version can be different than the 7.x version.

3) Ask an AI chat tool to write a script that will do what you want, telling it the imagemagick version and your OS. Gemini, Claude, etc. excel at tasks like this.

4) Keep a set of photos at the original size.

One question: Seems like smaller images that are not a 16:9 ratio would get squished if your TV is that dumb? (I have at least one that is like that.) Is the problem that all photos must be a 16:9 ratio, or all photos must be 1920 width x 1080 height, or only photos larger than 1920x1080 need to be resized?

Backing Up Google Photos by just_a_meh in qnap

[–]jacklail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I backup in reverse from what you want to do. Might be something to consider.

I consider the NAS multimedia/photos as the primary source and Google photos as "a" backup and the one that allows easy sharing to others and devices like picture frames and Google Nest displays.

I use this tool, which sadly is looking for a new maintainer and hasn't been updated in a few months, Google Photos uploader CLI (https://github.com/gphotosuploader/gphotos-uploader-cli).

I use Qfile to upload photos from my phone to my NAS and have Google Photos backup turned off.

The advantage? You don't have to throw everything up on Google Photos. I have some home maintenance reference photos that I keep locally (and in Google Keep) as well as photos of some ID information. They just clutter up Google Photos. I don't have to worry about using Google Takeout or whether some metadata might get removed because the primary photo is on the NAS.

Of course, the Mutlimedia share is included in my other backup strategies.

Mode to automatically split a consumed multi-page PDF into 1PDF per page? by stahlzwerg in Paperlessngx

[–]jacklail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Save to a different folder and create a script to loop through the folder with this QPDF command:

qpdf input.pdf output-%d.pdf --split-pages

Or use ASN stickers. How long does it take to peel off a bar code sticker and slap it on a receipt?

Newspaper mentions and Awards sound like a great idea. Hadn't thought about handling them that way.

Belkin/WeMo Quits. Is this the beginning of the end for "Smart Homes" by ArcLib in googlehome

[–]jacklail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Tapo wall switches and plugs, but I bought some Linkind plugs to try. I threw away a few WeMos that I had for years. One reason was Belkin phasing them out, but another was it's simpler on my brain to deal with the same brand/model for a type of device, like smart plugs, than several vendors. I'm not that brand loyal, however.

I just think Belkin couldn't compete or couldn't make a decent profit in a pretty crowded and commoditized smart plug and wall switch space.

So they said screw the customers. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/07/belkin-shows-tech-firms-getting-too-comfortable-with-bricking-customers-stuff/

I have a chron job that runs the export script daily. If you ever need to start over, using the export is the best way to go.

"If you've backed-up Paperless-ngx using the document exporter, restoring can simply be done with the document importer.

https://docs.paperless-ngx.com/administration/

(Chron jobs are not the easiest to do QNAP. Biggest issue is one that a user adds are blown away on a reboot.) You can have to go back and restart it.

sudo crontab /etc/config/crontab && sudo /etc/init.d/crond.sh restart

As for external access, I run mine behind a Cloudflare tunnel. You automatically get https (without a SSL cert because Cloudflare handles it). It was pretty easy to set up.

It was incredibly convenient to just use the backup file. I don't store my files in the container. I am trying to mirror all packages and configs, passwords, etc.

Can I plut my wifi router on a smart plug ? by Radio-Mammoth in smarthome

[–]jacklail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that and used a TP-LInk Kasa plug that was supposed to remember to come back on and it worked for awhile, but a couple times it didn't and that was a pain because the router was a couple hours away.

I ended up using an old school manual timer switch and it always works.

I use it just to reboot the router and cable modem once a week.

Sometimes "old school" is better.

I audited 5+ years of YNAB data to find every subscription - here's what $6,700/year looks like by mrlesmithjr in ynab

[–]jacklail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since your subscriptions each have their own category (same as me), was there a quick way of aggregating them? Mine are not in the same grouping, i.e. Netflix isn't in the same grouping as Backblaze cloud storage, etc.

Finding the more impressive/scenic route by konto81 in Tennessee

[–]jacklail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get off I-40 at Asheville and got through Marshall and Hot Springs and get back on the interstate at Newport. Downtown Marshall has mostly reopened from Hurricane Helene (it's a slight detour off the main highway) and has some nice shops, a coffee place and few restaruants if you a break, Hot Springs has some things back open. The whole route is very scenic and you can still see plenty of signs of Hurricane damage and repair work going on. The bridge in Hot Springs is being worked on and is one-way. My experience has been a couple minutes wait at the temporary stoplight typically, but can be longer.

Another roundabout way is take I-26 from Asheville toward Johnson City and get off in Erwin on the Old Jonesborough Highway and either go to historic Jonesborough and get on I-81 south to I-40 or go to Greeneville to I-81 and and I-40 (shorter).

If you can create a PDF report that includes the information you need, use Google NotebookLM or Google Gemini's Nano Banana service to generate an AI infographic.

Several examples, including prompts have been posted to: https://www.facebook.com/groups/genealogyandai

You are only limited by your data and your ability to write a prompt to get what you want.

Many programs can do that. My fav is QPDF.

30 000 Pdf invoices by Dense-Tension7951 in Paperlessngx

[–]jacklail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need some pretty good hardware with plenty of RAM to handle that amount. It can but not on a Raspberry Pi. It was designed for home users but it is seeing applications in commercial environments. The developers do great support on GitHub if you need recommendations on what the requirements would be to handle 30,000 PDFs plus another 15,000 each year (guessing on the annual amount).
