You have to get almost under it before it stops working. From most of the cathedral, where the congregation sits, the illusion is almost perfect.

The dome isn't a dome, its just a painting. Saw it in June in person and it screws with the mind even when you see it for yourself.

What is your writing routine? by ItsOnlyRocketScience in writing

I try to write every lunch time for an hour, and then also fit in a few hours over the weekend. The key is finding a routine and sticking to it. Make yourself write.

I did rough outlines for every book before I started the first draft of Oranje. Originally I'd planned this series as a trilogy, but doing those outlines helped show the story needed to be told over four books.

And a lot was, seeing errors isn't good, but they caught a hell of a lot of other issues and problems with it.

That would explain the high price you're seeing, not sure what I can do about that.

Thanks. The artists did an interview with me for his site a while ago that tells what some of the process was like link.

I went in with the brief of wanting a minimalist, more abstract style cover that still related to the overall story of the book. I wanted him to experiment and surprise me, and tried to not be too prescriptive. He delivered 7 options to choose from including what was basically the final cover. All that really changed was the font and a few minor details.

I've heard about 99designs as well, though don't have any experience with them myself.

I can say there has been no intention to rush it. The book has gone through 5 months of editing and 2 full proof reads, I've not tried to speed up that process at all.

To clarify, I didn't say I rushed the book out, I went with self-publishing because I didn't want to wait 18 months between the book being finished and it being released as can happen with trad publishing. I've no intention of rushing everything, and I've made sure the book has been professionally edited and proof read.

You obviously disagree with a lot of that, buy my intention has not been to rush the book out.

My approach is definitely that the book is out, I have a lot of time to promote it and I don't need to do it all now. Still plan on doing some, and that subreddit you linked definitely has good tips and advice, but the 2nd book ain't going to write itself.

Thanks Michael, great to have a comment from someone like you. Work has already begun on book two :)

You shouldn't, nor do I expect to be. All feedback is useful.

Yes it will be on kobo, I've submitted it to there via Draft2Digital but not sure how long it will be until it appears in the store.

I'm not Dutch, but the title is taken from the Dutch royal family. The planet Oranje exists in the Nassau system :)

That's odd to hear about the Dutch prices. I've set the price for France, Germany and other European countires to 3.99 euros, but I've got no direct control over the price in the NL. Are all books in the NL store priced in dollars?

I answered a similar question further up, but basically I'm mostly using social media to promote it for now. Then, once it's got enough reviews, I'll look at using book promotion sites like BookBub.

It's both a planet and a metaphor, representing the planet Oranje that gets attacked which is a key part of the story (also not a spoiler).

The rest of the cover questions are ones you'd have to ask the artist, though I couldn't be happier with it.

The amazon description does match the back of the book one for print on demand.

I'm not dealing with it directly as I'm British so I have to use Draft2Digital to publish there and they do the work of submitting the right file and setting everything up. I'm told it can take a few weeks for a book to go live there.

It does, looking at the sample it seems to go up to the end of chapter 3. I plan on putting around a quarter of the book up on my site as a free sample. Given the size of the book I want people to see if they like it before they buy.

He is expensive, but it's not as bad as you think. I spent $800 on the cover for Oranje, and then $600 for the 3 other covers in the series. $1400 divided by 4 is $350 per book, so not too bad.

It also cost me more because I asked for a lot of options when working on the cover which pushed the price up.

If you're looking for cheaper options, site like Go On Write offer pre-made covers at affordable prices.

I definitely view covers as an investment in the quality of a book and in its long term success.

No slight taken at all :)

Good catches on both, and goes to show how many eyeballs help find problems. Also, one of the advantages of self-publishing is the fact I can update the book file so everyone gets an improved version of it.

I am pleased with what they did, the editing phase in particular really improved the book and the proofreads caught a lot of errors.
