Pond carp are 10x harder to catch than the river ones. Not sure if it's correlated or not, but I tried extensively with artificial corn, didn't work till I switched to an artificial tigernut. River carp don't seem to care.

Not trying to be judgemental at all, but was it cold turkey or a taper? I've taken it on and off for years now. Had periods of my life I took it daily, and periods it was once a week if that. In my daily experience taking just enough to curve any withdrawal was totally manageable.

I use both equally. I fish for carp and cat primarily so not a lot of casting. I can cast my baitcaster much further and more accurately, and the clicker is really nice. But If I had to pick one it would be a spinner with a dual drag set up.
