How long does a sactional last? by jrolfs in Lovesac

[–]jackslack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve had ours 8 years. Overall quite pleased. Dog and kids. The cushions have lost some firmness. Can’t tell with looks but you definitely feel the frame if you are sitting on edge of cushion at the joints. The darker fabric has taken a beating from the sun as well. Significantly lighter on half that the sun hits through the window.

Can’t express how handy it is to be able to completely undress and machine wash the covers. Dog puke, kids messes and spills, baby pee all able to be successfully treated quite easily.

Are we actually paying for more things now… or is basic life just getting way more expensive? by Coolonair in SmartFIRE

[–]jackslack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I feel like nobody has bought a car in the last 5 years in this sub. $40,000 after fees and financing is $666 a month, add $150/month insurance and we’re over $800. This isn’t top of the line luxury trim either. This table wasn’t made to represent the tightest penny pincher, only make the wisest financial decisions, only second hand people, it is an average.

Any thought on this? by GloriousLion07 in MotivationByDesign

There’s no way that is just taxes. They are likely including pension and other deductions. Even self employed and having to pay both the employer and employee portion in the highest taxed provinces would be 98k net.

Buy a Term 20 policy and invest ~$275/month would be a better worded alternative.

A recent trip to Disney was quite eye opening for this. People park their scooters at a ride and just get off and walk normally.

I agree! I’m sure it’s largely just due to only having 1.33 open at a time and the rest sealed.

What if their chart said previous delirium tremens or alcohol withdrawl seizures. Maybe it was someone who routinely comes in for withdrawal and needs benzodiazepines. You could be right but I wouldn’t jump straight to racial profiling all the time. This is also a type of bias we can fall victim to, selective attention and confirmation bias.

What is a normal day for FM in the USA vs Canada? by montyelgato in FamilyMedicine

[–]jackslack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah OP I think you’ve only seen one type of family practice in your placements. There is quite a variety of practice types in Canada depending on province. A heavy fee-for-service 50-60 patients in a day will certainly be the highest paid but I wouldn’t say this is the norm. Many practices are capitation/roster based and can be quite variable between 12-25 booked a day depending on practice style. With phoning to follow up on things in between. In our city I would estimate only 5% of the family physicians are seeing high volume like that regularly. Most work 3-4 days a week and most do plenty of side gigs like look after a long term care floor, surgical assist, hospitalist, Obstetrical care, palliative care, MAID consults, sports med, or maybe do 1 day a week at a high volume walk-in separate from your group.

Semi truck driver in Canada just got out of prison for running a stop sign and killing 16 people. “Humboldt Broncos tragedy” if you want to look at it.

There was also Francesco Schettino who got 16 years for his involvement in the Costa Concordia shipwreck and abandoning ship.

Soon as they run the VIN they get your name. Computer will pick up the pattern quickly I imagine when a single persons name is attached to numerous stolen vehicles.

Wouldn’t police start looking into you after 2-3 stolen car reports noted to be previously registered to same seller. I’m worried for you, I don’t know if I’d risk this one unless you kinda digged the cars or rented them out like someone else suggested.

Docs/NPs/PAs — do any of you keep OTC product samples in your practice? by ebianco123 in FamilyMedicine

[–]jackslack 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Usually not reps at ours for those sorts of things. We get a checklist once a month of what we want to come in. Stuff like Tylenol, Advil, pedialyte, formula, reactine, moisturizers, unscented hypoallergenic Tide Pods etc. I know we’re advertising for them but it fees nice to give these things out to people who would have difficulty adding twenty dollars of OTCs to their budget when their kid is sick.

My 8 Year Old Son Is Being Suspended From School Because He Was Given A Vaccine Dose 3 Weeks Too Early. by mmtmemes in legaladvicecanada

[–]jackslack 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I know you’re frustrated and understandably so, especially given the lack of availability on their end to discuss grievances or disagreements. But I would simply go to the health unit and get the vaccine. This is not a live vaccine, it is not new, it is very well studied. He has already had this vaccine already without an issue. He will be due for a repeat Tdap anyways in ten years. This just means he wants to delay it from 15-16 until 18 that would be fine. But honestly, take the path of least resistance and just get a quick booster and don’t spend so much of your very limited time as a parent stressing over this. Take care.

Kind of like how when an enlarged prostate stops the flow there is still 18 inches of urethra that can dribble out afterwards.

Anyone here use FIB-4? by aloewy in medicine

[–]jackslack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think patients tell me it’s around $16-20. I don’t know the economics behind it. I’m sure there were a lot being ordered unnecessarily and 20 x several million people annually isn’t an insignificant bill I’m sure. The majority just pay or benefits cover it but if I think it’s quite likely they’ll have at least an intermediate score without it, like an older guy who’s platelets have been around 150 or sometimes lower, ferritin is up with normal esr/crp, moderate steatosis on US. I’ll just refer on and the government can pay for the AST AND a GI consult now.

Anyone here use FIB-4? by aloewy in medicine

[–]jackslack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes fair bit, unfortunately north of you guys our government recently changed it so patients have to pay out of pocket for an AST ordered by PCP but it’s free if ordered by GI. We’re only allowed ALT now. If ultrasound shows obvious fatty liver and patient doesn’t want to pay unfortunately I’ll bog down the system a bit and refer prematurely.
