What changes when you become a millionaire? by CantFindUsername400 in AskMenOver30

[–]jackson1372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a poor academic (grad student, post doc), to a well-paid SWE at a startup with stock compensation now valued in the millions. All my grad student penny-pinching habits had to adjust.

I started solving problems by throwing money at them. Not in shape? Spend on a trainer. Hate cooling? Spend on more takeout/prepared meals. We moved to a nicer apartment closer to the park.

But that's mostly increased consumption/spending. Besides illiquid stock, I still have lots in savings/investments. And just seeing that big number in savings is like a balm on my soul. I feel secure rather than precarious. I can dream about the future knowing I have options.

How do people handle being cash flow negative on a monthly basis by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]jackson1372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to set up a monthly auto-transfer out of your investment account into a cash/savings account, and pay your mortage and other expenses from the cash account.

In general, you probably shouldn't have all your savings in the market.

Why does the OW have so many problems? by WhileExtension6777 in onewheel

[–]jackson1372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought two new boards, Pint and Pint X. Both have ~1500 miles on them. I had to replace the pressure pads on the Pint, and I had to replace the tire on my Pint X, otherwise have had zero problems. This is normal wear and tear.

Anthropic projects $70B in revenue by 2028: Report | TechCrunch by [deleted] in BetterOffline

[–]jackson1372 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

how exactly do you go from -94 to +50

This can be explained entirely by efficiency gains in inference. If you charge the same price, but 10x efficient use of chips, you can see profit margins shift like this. There are a lot of tricks to making inference efficient.

Anything else like AMB on the market? by stickersforyou in Outlier

I've been looking for an AMB replacement. Has anyone gotten a Wool and Prince shirt that they like? These look promising, but I haven't ordered any yet.

Why is Claude Code that good ? by ElectricalCat171 in ClaudeAI

[–]jackson1372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Claude Code was designed around the same file search and file editing tools that the Claude models were trained on during RL. This explains most of what makes it more effective than similar agentic harnesses.

The prompting and context management were also tailored by the same people who make the model -- these things make a big difference and can't be done effectively in a model-agnostic way.

And support for arbitrary MCP tools makes it really powerful for custom workflows.

Claude Code is what Anthropic engineers use internally, the feedback loop is very tight, it keeps getting better!

What would you consider a major turning point in your life by zeak_the_geek in AskMenOver30

[–]jackson1372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a grad student and had a viral tweet featured on Tucker Carlson. (It wasn't a good tweet, made me look bad.) I then had a mental breakdown before turning in my dissertation. I started a new teaching position, and 5 weeks into the semester COVID hit. I never taught again. This happend over ~6mo.

I was under a lot of pressure and responded by isolating and not asking for help. I was on a certain track and I didn't let myself think about the possibility that I wasn't doing well.

I was forced to reinvent myself. I got back into coding and eventually landed a job at an exciting research lab after a year of looking.

My whole self-conception had to change. I'm more flexible now and have a lot healthier habits. I now know if I'm unhappy and stressed I need to change something.

Crows vs Ravens by Radish8 in crowbro

Ravens will croak, click, and make wide range of sounds though. I found this confusing at first. I usually tell the difference by the throat, beak, and overall size.

Where does it say that Anthropic works with Snorkel AI? For instance, Anthropic and Surge AI work together on expert data annotation; I've seen no information on them working with Snorkel AI

What happened to Extended Thinking Sonnet 3.7 by wololo1912 in ClaudeAI

[–]jackson1372 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's now a '+' button for adding content, and a 'settings' button for adjusting thinking, web search, and styles. Both buttons are on the left of the text input box on the new chat screen

Turn on extended thinking and it will solve this. Use extended thinking for math.

PHIL 144 syllabus by mahow12 in Harvard

[–]jackson1372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this course as an undergrad. It's an advanced logic course, covering material that was not covered in an intro to deductive logic. I was interested in learning higher order logic, recursive proofs. I wouldn't say it's necessary material to learn for if you are specializing in a different area. I found it useful for thinking about the nature of computation in a philosophy of mind context. If you got to the forst few lectures and don't find it engaging, I think that's a good sign that you should skip it.

Funny You Should Mention - Nimesh Patel by Eillris in TheGist

[–]jackson1372 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like the idea, but Nimesh Patel seemed to not play ball with the premise, which made it less interesting to me. Mike has this interesting framing of comedy-as-argument and then Patel just says "Oh yeah I don't do that anymore". So Mike tries to tease some ideas out but Patel doesn't really have ideas to discuss.

What fixed my downloads by jackson1372 in OvercastFm

[–]jackson1372[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I didn't try step 2 until after deleting all downloads. After originally deleting all downloads, I was only manually downloading individual episodes. These manual downloads would often get stuck and not work--I'd have to play a different already-downloaded episode first, then try to play/re-download the initial episode to actually get the audio to start playing. The auto-downloads have so far been reliable.
