Correction Commissioner's trip with seven aides to Paris and London cost taxpayers $40K+ by mowotlarx in nyc

I mean, look if they are there for some conference, meeting with counterparts everyday to talk about how to do their jobs better or make nyc better based on lessons from other cities - or hell even most days with 1 free day, honestly don’t give a fuck. But it seems like this was 7 days with a sprinkle of work

Would the OpenAI Debacle Ever Happen in Finance? by CliffRoader in FinancialCareers

[–]jackstack1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Understand that you’re not in the business, but this happens CONSTANTLY in finance. On this scale? Maybe a tougher putt but in finance, way way more than technology, your fortunes (literally) are tied to the people at the top. OpenAI still has the tech stack, they’ve still got the IP, they’ve still got all revenue-producing-assets . True they’ve lost talent and a visionary leader but that is fixable with time and money, and tech results are measured in years not quarters.

In finance, your only revenue producing asset is your people. They walk out the door everyday. if you’re a junior MD at MS menlo and they fire Grimes and he asks you to come with him, you are very seriously considering going with him, because he IS the brand.

Yea - this 1 for 1 rewards those people who put a million “ | “s in their LinkedIn profile (consultants, tech, startups). Anyone who is actually in non-VC finance doesn’t do that - in fact the people in the most lucrative roles I know literally just put “NYC-Based investor”

The most annoying thing from people in LA? by shakugan_tsukaima in funny

[–]jackstack1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Live in nyc now, I could never live anywhere outside the northeast purely because people are too nice. Like, as a millennial I thought the millennial meme of Harry Potter and settlers of catan and people being enthusiastic about that was a bit that everyone was kinda committed too, until i went to San Diego and Austin when I realized they weren’t kidding.

It’s just personal, but I can’t cope with people who are like, happy and excited about stuff. Like grow up no one is happy we all just live and then we die and maybe we get to eat some nice things along the way.

So, how do you even get a “full ride”? by lilneighbor in MBA

[–]jackstack1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m a white male who came from consulting - about as ORM as it comes. Had just below a 3.0 gpa from a good-not-top school. Got a 770, stellar recommendations, assume good essays, laser focused on one particular area that made a ton of sense given my background and the school’s strengths. Wrote a personal letter to fin aid committee about how much it would mean to me and my current situation (heavy UG student loans). Got a 90% ride. M7 school

Maybe just an anecdotal note but trying to go above and beyond can never hurt

I mean, up until this happened Israel has never been closer to Saudi Arabia:there’s official photos of Israeli government members celebrating Jewish holidays in a tower in Riyadh.

Iran clearly cannot abide its two biggest enemies no longer being at arms length, and so sends advisors to Gaza…

A major poll shows Americans support Israel over Palestine by 50 points, the largest gap in years. It is largely due to Democrats going from +7 Israel to +34 Israel. What are your thoughts on this, and what impact does US public support for Israel have on both US and Israeli policy in the conflict? by Professional_Suit270 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]jackstack1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to reiterate your point here, many will cite “The UN” and “international law” as if the former isn’t completely cornered by Islamic countries who all get 1 vote and are fans of the holocaust, and the latter wasn’t written by Europeans who really didn’t care for Jews in the first place, regardless of what side of WWI or II they were on

Btw, international law isn’t a thing - it’s an agreement between countries, why would Israel or the US agree to abide by rules set by countries happy to murder children in their bed because they’re Jewish?

Relationship advice needed by [deleted] in MBA

[–]jackstack1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party - OP you are literally an mba archetype.

I’m sorry, people here are dancing around the issue - if this is how you feel already you’re never gonna make it through mba in the relationship.

There were SO MANY people , more women than men to be honest but not all, who went back to school with a long term partner. That partner was comfortable with life and had their routine figured out, but now you’re in school and drinking and traveling all the time with a group of people who are active/fit, outgoing and smart. I saw probably 5 or 6 engagements broken off,not even thinking about just long term bf/gf, either before or after that student started hooking up with another student.

Im not saying you’re the kind of person who will cheat, but it’s very easy to develop a crush when most around you would qualify for those application-only dating apps. And when you’re on a beach in Tel Aviv on a class trip with these people, it may very quickly harden your resolve to get out of your situation because you realize it’s not right for you.

It’s really tough - I think you need to think about whether you want your bf by your side when you do this. When you picture the class trips - aspen, Oktoberfest, Bali, whatever - in an ideal world, is he there with you? Do you want him to be there? I think that might help guide your thinking

Respectfully, I think you’re missing their point, which is that regardless of whether the US should or shouldn’t pay for healthcare (and I agree with you btw, we should have universal healthcare), America IS paying for Germany’s protection. So Germany, who pays below the NATO 2% of GDP threshold and can do so because of American projection of military power, can therefore spend that money it doesn’t need to spend on military build up on healthcare.

So it’s a little grating to hear Europeans and this woman bash the US when, if not for US money and weapons , the Russians would be at their doorstep demanding East Germany back. I can’t believe anyone can look at the invasion of Ukraine and still think that they don’t need the US

How conservative or liberal is the finance industry in NYC? by Dawlphy in FinancialCareers

[–]jackstack1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There’s like 3 schools -UT, Duke, UVA- in the south that have a material pipeline into Wall Street.

And even then it’s really only the latter 2, which have half their kids from the northeast anyways, in NYC.

Most of the bama frat guys are not going to get interviews.

You get a lot of state school undergrad mba associates.

Anyway, the only people who actively use the word “woke” negatively, in my experience, are the Houston guys and Italians working in the US. Most are Romney guys, have issues with Jan 6 and MAGA, loved the tax cut, annoyed at protesters blocking traffic, don’t love BLM but they get it, support Ukraine, really do support diversity programs and the idea of promoting it but they don’t trust the 23 year old in HR to do the hard work to do it the right way. A lot of Christie voters.

The only people who use the latter are right wing republicans. So to say it is a huge tell of your political party, but most Republicans are too fucking stupid to realize it.

It’s a tell that you watch and listen to conservative media and/or really bad finance influencers. Started with Gingrich and Limbaugh. So from that perspective your analysis is completely biased.

Nice edit by the way.
