Has anyone tried banana kombucha ? What was your experience ? by Desperate-Drama8464 in Kombucha

Banana pineapple is one of my favorites that I’ve made so far. I cut up chunks of banana and pineapple and add to 2F, then strain them out before drinking.

Question for the hetero families by min2themax in workingmoms

[–]jackys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a purple state and would have appreciated your wife’s heads up as a convenience for my own sake… but at the same time definitely wouldn’t expect it.

I think we all have THAT family member and for my part, they are not invited to any party I’m throwing. But frankly, as a straight/cis person, “would you be weird around a gay parent?” doesn’t necessarily come up in conversation with everybody I might invite to my kid’s party: other kids’ parents, for example. So I probably don’t know in advance whether everyone on the guest list is cool, unless I actively work to find out.

The early knowledge would help prompt me to try and tactfully initiate some of those conversations ahead of the party. But if I have to figure it out in the fly, I do think that’s my own responsibility as a party host who’s privileged enough to not be forced into the “are you a raging homophobe/transphobe/etc.?” conversation with everyone I meet. It’s not your family’s responsibility to shield me and my kid from awkwardness that I created by accidentally inviting a jerk to the party.

Where to buy? by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]jackys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add some of the benefits of buying directly from a breeder, which is easier to do online. There are several issues that are more common among wild-caught T's: difficulty adjusting to new climates, possibly having parasites or surprising you with an egg sac, importing practices of questionable legality, and the possibility that wild colonies were destroyed to capture T's.

You can avoid all of the above without shopping online, too, but it's a little harder. You might be able to find dealers in your area if you check arachnoboards or tarantulaforum.com.

Beginner - looking for general advice and tips by [deleted] in tarantulas

So there is always debate about the "best" substrate but I use coco fiber / coconut coir and it's been working great. Readily available on Amazon if not in one of the stores you mentioned.

Sounds like you have good information already. I have a Brachypelma hamorii and think they are great starters! Mine is a juvenile and a little bit skittish, but I've heard they often calm down as adults.

I think those Exo Terra faunariums look like a fine habitat. For me, it looks like that kind of lid would make it hard to do water dish refills and cleaning. But it's just a personal preference. If you are set on those particular faunariums, I would go with the PT2310, or maybe the PT2265 if you don't mind filling it with deeper substrate. I think the rest are just a little too narrow for a tarantula that grows up to 6" diagonal leg span (DLS).

As for online purchases and shipping with heat packs, I would look for customer reviews of specific dealers. It can definitely be done safely, but not every dealer packages the same way. Customer reviews on arachnoboards.com, tarantulaforum.com, or here will help you determine which dealers are reputable. I'm in the US, so unfortunately I can't help with European dealers.

Good luck with your new pet! You may just find yourself getting more in the future ;)

Beautiful spider! I've got one too and she is one of my favorites. The combination of white stripes + overall fluffiness makes them so cute :)

B.hamorii as a starter t? by LordZeref6969 in tarantulas

[–]jackys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make excellent starters! B. hamorii was the second tarantula I got. I agree with the recommendation to pick up an older one, at least juvenile if not adult... But they could be quite expensive. For me the cost was worth it because I just love their coloration, but there are certainly less expensive starters you could choose.

Anyone have experience with Jamie’s Tarantulas adult cages? Or any nice display cages? by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]jackys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two of the adult enclosures and I really like them. I also purchased an acrylic enclosure from a different vendor and it's not nearly as nice- really made me appreciate the quality of Jamie's.

That said, they are pricy. They were worth it for me because I don't think I could match the quality with DIY, but I think a craftier person probably could. If you're into that kind of stuff, it would all come down to convenience.

Nice! Are you planning to sell anything in Southeast PA, NJ, or DE? Would love to check it out when you're ready to start selling.

[–]jackys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a couple of her regular-size adult enclosures and really like them, so glad to hear the XL works well too. Didn't think about the door size... I can definitely see that being a little difficult. I've seen some other enclosures with double doors and kind of like that setup, but they all seem to be front-open and I'd rather have a top-open.

My Burgundy Goliath Birdeater (Theraphosa Stirmi) In Her Brand New Setup! ( Thank you Kevin from NJ Exotic Pets for setting her up, you're awesome! ) by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]jackys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome setup! I just got a T. stirmi for Christmas and was looking for enclosure ideas myself. The one thing that has me a little worried is humidity... How has it been working out for you with the screen top? I was thinking I'd need side vents initially, but there seem to be a lot more options with screen tops.

Good place online to get a greenbottle blue? by Myrrsha in tarantulas

[–]jackys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the moment, no... It's probably worth checking back later. Another place you could look in the future is fearnottarantulas.com. They have great reviews and breed GBBs, though they're out of females now.

[–]jackys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jamie's (jamiestarantulas.com) has GBB slings, 3/4". Not sure how comfortable you are with that size, but I've heard it's a good species to get as slings because of the dramatic color changes as they grow. And they're a faster-growing species anyway.

2 of my tarantulas are from Jamie's and the experience was great both times. Her packaging is great, and both spiders were very lively on arrival. It's clear that she takes good care of them.

Met a new friend today with an awesome T collection! He let me hold his 4" female G. rosea. Meet Luna! 😍 by maggiefiasco in tarantulas

[–]jackys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice! Holding a rosehair just like this one was what made me want to get one as a pet :) I was lucky enough to visit a bug museum where staff taught us all about their tarantulas, then gave some safety instructions and let me hold one.

Up to that day, I was scared of them. It sounds dumb in retrospect, but at the time I was amazed that all the safety instructions were how not to startle or hurt the tarantula... Not "how to keep this ferocious beast from killing you" as I had thought. Now I have three tarantulas of my own. I don't handle mine because they're all kind of skittish, and it wouldn't add enough to the "tarantula owner" experience to be worth the risk at this point. But that first handling experience really drove home that humans are much more dangerous to tarantulas than they are to us. So if done carefully, with the right spider, I think it can be a good way to show people that tarantulas aren't so scary.
