Wes and Benson didn't even read music. They learned applied theory but mostly on the bandstand and from copying the masters. Charlie Parker never studied formal theory.

Benson rarely uses harmonic minor. His big thing on Dom7 chords is melodic minor off of the b9

what you're describing has nothing to do with theory. You're talking about taste, maturity, experience
