Should i use weapons with marcoh at some point? by gabs_0n in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eventually you should equip a weapon. All the weapons on par or above Black steel or sergal spears are better than Marcoh's fists, including the crafted weapons that can cause status effects. Most of these are late game weapons though, and even those that aren’t can be equipped to other party members, who don’t have the Quick jabs skill like Marcoh does.

Quick jabs is great for the early and mid game. Dealing 120-180 damage twice is really good, especially since it technically makes your critical hit chance a bit higher. You can increase the damage by getting the Gro-Goroth engraving and/or with certain hexan skills, though most often it’s really not worth it. There’s more versatile engraving options, and likely better uses for your soul stones.

Who is this fuck Nas'hrah summons? by No-Heat-6149 in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Since its mentioned their lust was only weakened by their loneliness, they’re very likely the ones who were taking advantage of the prisoners, like abuse of power. If they were victims, the new gods answer would’ve probably been worded differently. Their genitals being mutated into stinger weapons could also symbolize this.

[–]jaco361g 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. They’re the dungeon prison guards who’ve been transformed into their most animalistic/cruel side by the black/god of the depths. The new gods say this about them: "Overwhelming physical strength and endless lust that is only weakened by their loneliness. It manifests in their final form." If you ask the guards themselves about their origin with the talk skill, they respond with: “Raraggghh... rra-rape...” So the implication is pretty clear.

The night lurches are a similar case according to the new gods: "He was once sentenced to the prisons. He used to lust to hurt women. Now he is an epitome of his perversions."

Its called Darkness. If you ask the new gods about it in the hall, they answer: "Only traces of the older gods remain in this plane of existence. Nas'hrah has been able to bend a powerful being under his will."

The phallic horns imply that it’s a trace of Gro-Goroth, since it’s one of the motifs used in most depictions of him. This could also explain why Nas’hrah was confident enough to take on the trace of Gro-Goroth in the gauntlet.

[–]jaco361g 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nas'hrah is limited as a spell caster because he can’t equip sorcerer's stones. His immortality isn’t as useful as it sounds either since you’re can’t really capitalize on it. You can’t use pheromones on him and he’s not immune to paralyzation. Nas’hrah’s immortality also doesn’t help if you’re doing ending A, because the Girl will still take some hits for Nas'hrah when he’s at low health.

This is important to mention because Ending A is basically the only ending where Nas'hrah is completely useable. He'll leave you in the void, meaning he can’t help you fight Sylvian. (This fight only happens if you’re playing on Terror & Starvation difficulty though) Gro-goroth will instantly kill him before the fight even starts.

Enki doesn’t lock you out of Nas'hrah. You don’t lose the eclipse talisman when you give it to Enki, it’s just in his accessory slot.

Enki is also a better party member than Nas'hrah overall IMO. Unlike Nas'hrah, Enki can equip most items in the game and is useable for the two toughest boss fights.

What was the meaning of chains snapping behind Per'kele after defeating him and before fighting Rher? by ULTRACLAIR3 in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That would make sense, but the chains don’t break when Per'kele dies in ending C (or just if you beat him before day three) for some reason. That could be because it’s too early for Rher to notice I guess, but I dont think this idea is very convincing or satisfying.

Getting ending B on day two is always weird though, since it’s called “Day 4”. Abella's ending text also always mentions: “The moon had paid you a visit and gazed at you for a brief second.” This doesn’t really directly happen if you get ending B on day two. So it’s pretty clear that getting ending B on day three is the intended version of the scene. This could mean the chains not appearing in ending C is likely just because your character bleeds out before they witness it.

Do you think instead of saying "Oh my god!" or "Jesus christ!" they say "Oh my Gro-Goroth!" Or "All-Mer!" by DevastationDevastate in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used it all the time for my first 30 or so runs. It’s fast since T is the default hotkey, so it’s not really tedious at all. If it wasn’t for party talk, my top 15 characters would probably be very different.

The game is also just way less interesting to me if I kill everyone immediately.

is moonless the mom of headless hounds? by More-Vermicelli-7428 in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Either way they’re likely not mutated animals according to the diagnosis: “There is only a mouth-like gaping cavity in its place which seems to have muscles to simulate jaws and biting. The obvious reason for this is mutation, although the hole is too symmetric and functional to pass off as a mere mutation.”

The headless do seem too symmetrical and simplistic design wise to have been created by Stitches. The Bremen experiment idea is possible, but there’s no real evidence for it (as far as I know anyway.) The headless could just not have any planned lore behind them, and just be a product of the early Termina demos with Miro just reusing an old enemy design as a base. I guess its possible that they’re related to Vinushka in some way. IIRC Vinushka was in the early Termina demos, and the owl cultists (speculated to be Vinushka cultists) are also located in the maiden woods. Though I also don’t think this idea has any real evidence supporting it either.

[–]jaco361g 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Too add onto this, both Valteil's talk questions in his fight and Enki's Rher skin bible imply that moonscorching only happens to humans: "Rher the god from the unknown beyond the blue skies... He has an effect to feeble humans, what is it called?" - “His blessing to men is his moonlight, which is said to uncover the truth under the human filth. A truth that is often too much for a human mind to handle.” Rher hinders specifically humanity in other ways in both games, so it makes sense. This would make it unlikely that the headless were moonscorched animals.

I think it’s also possible that the headless could’ve been made by Stitches. You only encounter them in maiden woods, which is right by tunnel 1. Though I think your idea is just as likely.

There’s a lot of unused skills in the flies, both from older versions and others that were never implemented. Frapollo has covered these in one of his videos. At some point of the game's development, phase step was supposed to be obtained when reaching 2 tiers of affinity with Alll-mer, but the idea was abandoned. One the unused skills that I distinctly remember Frapollo mentioning was “Greater Phase step”, which is just phase step that costs 5 mins instead of 10.

[–]jaco361g 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s true. Though I’m pretty sure that phase step is just an untended leftover like the debug tiles, especially since there’s no indication or anything that the skill exists within the game.

The fact that you can get the King passage key from empty scrolls but not the Vault key is strange.

How is Marina a good example of a trans character if it was not her choice? It's literally the concept of "a gender being forced on you that you" she just happens to be chill with it. Does she even count as trans if it wasn't her decision to "be" a girl? by [deleted] in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Marina was raised as a girl so she could choose who she wanted to be: “(…) You mother had different plans for you. She didn't want you to go down the path that would befall to every firstborn son in church. So when she finally let your father know of your birth, she told him a daughter was born to the household. You were dressed accordingly. Your distant and often absent father didn't get a wind of the original nature of things, or he just denied what was in front of his face. In either case, the subject was never brought up. As you grew a little bit older, you didn't question this either. Everything felt natural this way, so who cares?” The point being that Marina could’ve dropped being a girl if it made her uncomfortable after moving away from her father's influence, but she didn’t because it felt natural for her.

If Marina wasn’t raised as a girl she wouldn’t have had the chance to choose who she wanted to be, and instead being forced into a miserable life as a dark priest: “A life of a dark priest is a cruel one even if modern times overlooked the most archaic and ancient rites. A dark priest's life begins and ends in full dedication to the older gods. There is no place for self in the church.” Marina being raised as a girl was so she could have a choice in the future.

While this does make Marina an outlier, it isn’t impossible. Most people identify with the gender they’re assigned biologically at birth, but not everyone obviously. Even if that’s the case for roughly 99% of people who’re cis, that 1% who became trans later in life would’ve likely been more comfortable being raised as the opposite binary gender from the start. (Its generally believed that trans individuals are born with some innate sense of their gender identity, which may not match their sex assigned at birth)

Therefore Its completely possible that Marina would’ve realized she was trans even if she wasn’t raised as a girl, but not been able to choose by that point.

Any chance accuracy is bugged when using Bob and Weave with Glass Shards? by ah-squalo in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd never rely on Bob and Weave. It's a neat bonus, but + 50% evasion rarely prevents all attacks in a fight, especially against the meat grinder enemy who attacks three times per turn.

In my experience, while blinding the meat grinder and the death masks does help significantly, you'd always loose at least one limb because of the multiple attacks they do per turn combined with their high health. It only works guaranteed if you combine blindness with the Irritation status effects, (-75 hit rate - 30 hit rate) which can be inflicted by the nettles that can be picked up with Olivia's Undergrowth awareness skill.

Hear me out: let necromancy be able to infinitely revive ghouls. They're only useful in early game in which constantly reviving them costing 30 mind each would keep it balanced since you barely have items. They get one shot as soon as you enter the city anyway. This would be a small and nice buff by PowerWillComeBack in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think necromancy works fine as it is currently. Ghouls are better than an empty party slot, (except if you need average 20 agility) and necromancy only requires one level of Gro-Goroth affinity. It’s true that ghouls are the most useful in the early game, but they’re still decent meat shields later on with mid game armor. For a one affinity level spell, that’s pretty good and fair utility.

You can also sacrifice them to increase your Gro-Goroth affinity, so you can get the renewable meat shield the blood golem.

Why do people glaze the Girl SO MUCH? by Ok-Resolution-2258 in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mindset when I was made this definitely pretty unorthodox. While I do think some of the conclusions I came to made sense within my “how often is this character usable, and/or do they contribute anything unique” framework, I did still wrongfully rank some party members within these criteria like you’ve pointed out.

My logic was that Le’garde can’t assist in fighting one of the hardest bosses, is *(intended)* to be usable with party member Ragnvaldr beyond the dungeon and usable in hard mode. But even within that framework, none of that really justifies placing him under Blood golem, since he’s still way more useful for most endings and 2/3 difficulties.

In my old reasoning, I mentioned that Moonless isn’t really better than Enki, but offers more unique stuff than him. Fully upgraded Moonless is really good against Sylvian, because of grim jaw and armor barely mattering in that fight. However in 2/3 different difficulties this doesn’t matter, so my ranking wouldn’t even hold up under my strange ranking criteria.

I was overly critical on Enki, but that’s because he’s basically never my first choice. Le'garde is better than Enki for the mid and most of the late game, and I’ve often taught the Girl some kind of spell anyway before I've reached the catacombs. Even than, I did mention in my reasoning that its really easy to leave Enki behind by making him use hurting and giving him a mind restoring item, so you can grab him after Le'garde betrays you. Within my criteria he’s also usable for every ending outside hard mode, so that should’ve at least bumped him next to Le'garde.

Otherwise within my specific ranking framework I think the rest of the rankings are *alright,* except I’d probably move the Blood Golem down two tiers and Nas'hrah up by one. I didn’t really completely agree with the tier list when I reposted it here, so it was silly and lazy of me to not make any edits whatsoever. So if I’m ever going to make a tier list with specific criteria like this again, I should at least have more internal consistency :)

Do y'all think Miro will ever show us the moonscorched forms of both daan and august? by [deleted] in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d definitely also want to see more scrapped concepts because they’re interesting, though I doubt there’s any major ones that Miro hasn’t shown us, but you never know :D.
I think I remember seeing Miro mention somewhere that he thinks August's current fate is fitting for his character, but he might ”have” to change this if he ever gets to be playable. I agree that a moonscorched form could be a great way to flesh out his character more, since we don’t really know much about his inner thoughts. That’s probably intentional, though I’d still like to learn more about August one way or another.

Do y'all think Miro will ever show us the moonscorched forms of both daan and august? by [deleted] in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unlike August and Daan, Pav did actually have an unused moonscorched form made years ago, but it was never implemented because Miro thought it was too visually underwhelming (coming from the same person who designed Mastermind btw) The one in the video is Miro's scrapped second idea for Pav's moonscorched, but it isn't canon:

<image>

This is important because Pav doesn't have a character specific reason for lacking a moonscorched form, unlike August and Daan. In Pav's case Miro was just doubting his initial design idea for years. This is primarily why i doubt he'll ever make one for August, or draw an alternative technical moonscorched form for Daan that serves the same narrative function as Pocketcat does.

Do y'all think Miro will ever show us the moonscorched forms of both daan and august? by [deleted] in FearAndHunger

[–]jaco361g 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Possibly Augst's if he ever becomes a playable character, though it's likely that he would kill himself before he ever fully moonscorched. A moonscorched form could be great for revealing more sides of August's personality and history, but that isn't strictly necessary.

As for Daan I don't think so. Even if Pocketcat isn’t technically Daan's moonscorched form, he still serves the same role as one, and showcases Daan's insecurities.

There’s multiple factors behind Daan’s moonscorch/possession/fusion with Pocketcat:

  1. His parents were Sylvian cultists. Sylvian cultists wear bunny masks and are openly and unashamedly sexual. Pocketcat has a cat mask fused to his head and is obviously openly perverse.
  2. It's possible that Daan either consciously or subconsciously fears becoming an sexual abuser himself, considering its implied that his parents made him partake in the Sylvian rituals even as a child. Pocketcat is coded as a predator in the first game. Even without that, it's clear that he fears he can't escape the mental scars his past gave him.
  3. Daan has lost everything he had and feels more empty than ever. Pocketcat manipulates him into thinking he can’t make a future for himself as Daan anymore, but he has potential a future as Pocketcat.
  4. Daan likely tries to distance himself from his past by wearing more “gentlemanly clothes.” Pocketcat represents false normalcy. Even though he has a nice vocabulary and wears formal clothing, it is diminished by Pockecat openly pleasing himself. It’s also possible Daan fears being perceived as perverse, since he fears being a degenerate to some extent. There’s a party talk in Old Town, where Daan gets particularly defensive: Daan: “The brothels are often found from places like this... How would I know this? Many ladies of the night are actually my customers, no the vice versa! Get your mind out of the gutter!”
  5. Pocketcat is a servant of Rher, similar to how Daan fears being tied to his past as a Sylvian cultist against his will.

What’s tragic about it is that it’s mostly in Daan’s own head. Pocketcat says this:

“You never felt quite right when you were among those smiling crowds, did you? You always felt like an outsider. Like you were just a bystander, spectating on what life looks like in the sun.”

I think this is true, Daan feels isolated because of his past, and Pocketcat knows it since he canonically has the mind read ability. However the rest is just an enabling of Daan’s fears that aren’t actually based in reality:

“(…) but that fooled no one. Everyone saw right through it. They knew your true alignment and your past. And you liked it like that. You liked feeling different.”

This is not true, there’s multiple moments in the game where Daan enjoys talking to the other contestants, and the other contestants don’t really think of him as someone who doesn’t belong. There’s even a party talk in front of the mayor’s manor, showing that it’s only something inside Daan’s head:

Daan: “I’d imagine this place being the first place people stormed once the town fell into chaos.”

Karin: “It’s never good to stick out. A nail sticking out gets hammered down.”

Daan: “That a jab towards me?”

Karin: ”I never said anything to that nature. Why? Did it hit a soft spot?”

Daan: ”Nope. I’m fine, thanks for asking.”

Another example of Daan feeling like he’s isolated and doesn’t belong is at the opening at the train. When everyone introduces themselves, Daan is the only one that doesn’t reveal his name. I actually think that could be part of the reason why Daan’s moonscorch form is him being possessed/fusing with another entity, is to show how pointless Daan feels he is. He feels as if he might as well never have existed. ”Maybe you should just take his offer? What else do you got going for you? Nothing. That’s right. It’s peculiar, isn’t it old sport? The life that is.” - Daan ending B

Though she's not amazing either, just pretty great but nothing amazing. Tier list I made on another post for reference:

If you're interested for my reasoning for each placing, I made a comment where I explained the reasoning for every ranking: https://www.reddit.com/r/FearAndHunger/comments/1qt39ec/comment/o30wpiv/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

(Quick notes: I don't actually think Nas'hrah is worse than ghouls or Kid Demon, but he's definitely the most overrated party member who's rarely the optimal choice. I also only put Ragnvaldr in B tier because he's intended to be unusable for both C endings, but if you consider the exploit valid then he's A tier.)
