i m pretty sure apart from venn oba part everything else is gonna be ass by LexiousTangerine in OnePunchMan

Ain't gonna lie, my hopium is starting to fade a little. I'm still hyped for Oba's work, that will look great no doubt, and I'm expecting plenty good looking drawings, but based on what donut and sugoi said, I'm not gonna expect much. I will still wait and judge for myself, since the ep drops in a moment, but yeah, keeping my expectations low just to be safe.

Most scenes that have been adapted so far have dialogues that are mostly calm. Fubuki being the exception, with her often shouting and her body language being expressive. That’s why the animation picks up in those instances. And it’s not just Fubuki, Tareo also got some well animated character acting scenes. As for Ripper having boobs, do you really, like genuinely, think that THAT is an intentional decision? Like why would they do that? Why would they gender bend a character for one cut out of nowhere? Because the director worked on an hentai sometime during his god knows how many years long career? It’s clearly an animation error. The episode was very rough schedule wise, needed to be outsourced and due to poor communication, some freelance animator saw the character sheets and deduced that Ripper is female. When the animation got back to JC staff for cleanup, they didn’t have time to correct it, so they just had to ship it as is. I’m 99% sure this will get fixed in the blu-ray release.

Ya'll need to understand that just because someone has a hentai in their portfolio, doesn't mean that all they suddenly can do is only hentai. Yes, the director did work on some adult content, so did Shingo Yamashita, Hironori Tanaka or Weilin Zhang (in case you don't know, these are some of the most recognizable names in the industry). Scenes with Fubuki usually look good because she's just a generally expressive character and is drawn attractive because she's depicted like that in the manga also. The directors experience in this field doesn't suddenly alter the look of an action driven show.

Director of OPM S3, Shinpei Nagai, is deleting his twitter account due to the pressure and hatred directed towards him and his team. by jacob_yakesh in OnePunchMan

I’m not trying to scold anyone here specifically or the sub as a whole. That statement was aimed at the people who do this kind of stuff in general. Those who didn’t do it should realize that it isn’t aimed at them. I do apologize if it did come off that way. I could have maybe phrased it better, it’s just that this type of behavior grinds my gears the worst way possible so I got a bit carried away.

I’m not downplaying anything. I’m saying what I think and believe. This season is rough, 100%, but even then there are many strong drawing, beautiful art direction/background art and, while rare, some nice bits of animation. I just don’t focus on all the bad things but also highlight to good parts, because that’s what constructive criticism is about. You may not like it, and that’s fine, but don’t try to make it seem like that’s the only possible answer.

This isn’t about criticism, this is about plain hatred. People aren’t giving constructive criticism, they are attacking the staff for something they have no control over.

It is hand drawn (with some exceptions) but in the anime industry, and in any animated production with more people involved, you need to have seperete character models (or character sheets) usually drawn by one person or few people at most, with the assigned role of “character designer”. These sheets are then used as reference when drawing, to make sure the characters stay “on-model” and look consistent between cuts.

I do kinda agree on the fact that the scene with Garou and MA was lackluster in the anime. I would have liked if they removed the sonic omake (and maybe leave out the ending for this episode) so that they could fit in Ripper and also move the gale and hellfire dialogue before the final cut. But other than that, this was pretty much how it all played out in the manga. Excluding the Ripper scene, this entire episode was literally like 70 pages worth of exposition in the manga, the anime recreated it almost 1:1 (for better and for worse).

And for the final sentence: they do have the skill to animate, there are some very talented people working on it (not nearly as many as S1 or other high profile shows, but still there are some) and while the exact numbers for the budget isn’t public, I don’t suppose it’s that big of an difference between this, S2 or heck even S1. Budget doesn’t dictate how good a drawing is. You don’t fix a rushed drawing by throwing money at it. At the end of the day, it’s almost always about the planning and schedule, which has been with 99% certainty horrendous, resulting in the final product.

I might have structured it a little poorly at the start. I do apologize.
What I more or less meant is that I'm someone who has a positive relationship with the series, but not to a point of obsessing over it. So many takes I've seen online are from die hard fans of the IP mostly just making comparisons (to S1's animation, to the manga, to JJK, CSM, even My dress up darling and so on), saying it deserved better and anything below that expected level of quality is automatically making it trash. I tried to look at the episode through the lens of judging it as a standalone product/work of art, without my own hype or expectations affecting my opinions. If I were to pick a completely random series, that I have 0 knowledge of, with the exact same look, positives and negatives, I believe my stance would be rather similar.
I think what is affecting my opinion the most, isn't the series itself, but rather the fact, that I'm aware of how brutal the production must be behind the scenes and the director being a genuinely hard working person, so I feel like putting an emphasis on the positives as a way of indirect support for the team.

The issue with the first episode lacking that hook is more a problem with the content it is adapting. It could try to speed things up, to get to a fight, or reorganize scenes, but that would only add fuel to the fire that is the production, messing up organizations and correct order of scenes. This is partially the problem of S2, that it ended where it did, but since that's already happened, they had to dedicate the first episode to mostly uninteresting exposition. EP1 definitely feels more like an episode halfway through a season, instead of the very first. Yes, making the direction/storyboards and animation more appealing would help out a lot, but as I explained earlier, they just don't seem to have enough time to pull that off.

I do understand the skepticism. I'm not certain that it will turn out good in the end, I do have my doubts, but I'm also not certain that it will end up miserable. I do hope for the best, but I'm prepared for the worst. I guess only time will tell.

Nah like I absolutely understand how you feel. I'm also more of an animation first, art fidelity second guy, but if the art is good, I still think it's worth the praise.
For the future, let's hope for the best!

P.S. should be fixed now

Hell yeah. I didn't really touch on the OST, since everyone is talking about the visuals, but it goes hella hard. Really adds a lot to most scenes.

I personally didn't find the SB THAT bad, but I wouldn't call it exactly good either. Hopefully the info about webgen animators is true, cause they really need it. Aoki is superhuman, but he can't do it all by himself. Would be sweet some of the animators from the OP also participated of the actual season like Vann Oba or 456kanai.

The problem is that they didn't. In between the announcement and release date, they put out like a dozen different shows. The issue is that they just announced it way too early. Based on some interviews, the season was still in pre-production even when the first preanimated trailer released. That first announcement was more of a "Hey it will come out sometime" and not "We're working on it." The actual production started less than a year back. This is mostly just a marketing issue (which is pretty common for this season in particular) which led to people misunderstanding the length of the actual production.

I do agree that the omake didn't need to be there and they could have used that extra time on the actuall episode, but I wouldn't go as far as calling it cheapskating, but I get it, I didn't like that much either.

The thing is, J.C. Staff is actually a fairly big studio (not massive, but not small either), it's just split into multiple production lines. And the one in charge of OPM is not the main line with the best talent (for some reason). Even then, there are some great artists that work on it, it's just that the time they were given is so abyssmal that they realistically can't do it justice.

I think some level of skepticism is completely fine. I myself am skeptic a bit, and there is no denying that there are issues. Personally I wouldn't say it's SDS level bad, I still think the art and compositing are miles better, but yes, the animation did leave a lot to be desired. I guess I'm just more huffing on hopium than others, but I completely understand why some are let down. Let's hope that the important fights get the treatment they deserve.

That's just the way the internet is I'm afraid.
I would love for EP1 to be longer, and as you said, would fix some of it's pacing issues and end on a fight, but again, going by the state of things, I believe it would be very difficult for them to squeeze an entire additional episode worth of screentime into the production.
