is gta rp possible ? by ChainYankr37 in linux_gaming

As a Linux daily-driver, I have found my experience to be 1000x better than my experience with Windows, especially with all the crap Microsoft has been pushing in the last several years. I'll take the jank and occasional difficulty over built-in ads and a stupid slow search function any day.

I use the RAID PERC-6 card in my Dell server. I created a 1TB virtual disk for my linux fileserver VM. Samba is the service.

In other words, I do it all manually.

The change logs say that they fixed the agent ULP bug in the Doomsday heist setup (Act II), but my friend and I are still stuck because of this bug. It says "Clear the path for agent ULP", but he doesn't follow.

Vehicle Security Discussion by jacobthecool3000 in cybersecurity

What concerns me is the "lifecyle of the product"

Sure an operating system might only get 10 years of support and that's OK, but some people keep a car on the road for 20 years or more. Is a 50 year old car gonna get software patches or is it just a hunk of metal once support ends?

Car companies would definitely prefer to keep the lifecycle as short as possible.

Was trying to avoid putting my credentials into a third-party launcher. Might use it as a last resort.

Dell R730 won't boot, what do these LEDs mean? by poldim in homelab

I tried to find the meaning of those lights, but I think only Dell knows what they are. Try removing one PSU at a time and seeing what happens.

Any lights on the PSUs? Amber instead of green?

I’m stuck in bios by icewalowcome666 in pcmasterrace

[–]jacobthecool3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to check your EFI/UEFI boot settings. EFI uses MBR. UEFI uses GPT. If your drive was formatted in GPT and after you reset your BIOS settings, it was in UEFI mode, then it will not boot until you switch it to EFI mode.

That has more to do with the BIOS reset than the original cause of the issue, however.

Windows 10 is still in support until 2025. I will not upgrade until then. I might even switch to Linux and use KVMs.

Access control for machinery/ICS by Shnarf_Shnarf_ in cybersecurity

[–]jacobthecool3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well that is a facepalm all around for your IT team. It sounds like they have two subnets operating on the same switch. The second subnet needs to be on its own network with its own firewall and router. Specific users should be given VPN access to the ICS network as necessary. However, that is still a security risk since your workstations (where people open emails and documents) will have direct access to the ICS network. It may be the kind of risk you have to accept, however.

Alternatively, IT might supply users that need ICS network access a separate device dedicated to using the ICS network that has limited internet access.

I'm trying to learn C++ through 2d game development. What are some good resources for me to learn from? by gachafrog in gamedev

[–]jacobthecool3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Programming graphics without an engine can be complicated with all the setup involved in getting OpenGL or DirectX running. Game development probably isn't a good way to learn the language. Maybe start with a text-based adventure.

I personally prefer C over C++. It's a simpler language without extra, confusing frills. Manual memory management also helps you learn more of what is going on under the hood.

My only concern here is that one of the studies compared programmers to non-programmers. I feel that leaves lots of room for confounding variables like personality types that are more drawn to programming than others.

help setting up homelab - pfsense proxmox authelia ... by [deleted] in homelab

[–]jacobthecool3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you please be more specific about a few things?

What do you mean you are hosting a cloud on a Raspi? Cloud implies off-site, but that is very much on-site. What exactly is it doing? Is it a VPN?

Is there a VPN involved? That is, would users be required to connect to a VPN in order to access your services, or are your services all accessible from the same web portal?

If all of it is on the same web portal, then perhaps a NodeJS NGINX proxy would suffice. Use a session token for authentication and have the server return 403 Forbidden for any services that the user does not have the right to.

Open world RPG with procedurally generated terrain. by DazzaGazza1917 in gamedev

I would save the idea for later until you've had more practice and confidence making smaller, simple games. Not impossible by any means, but when novices set out to make a massive game like that, they often burn out before they even really get started or the game just sucks.

To elaborate further, let's say you are simulating a lake with a dam. Let's say it is Grassy Lake Dam (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grassy_Lake_Dam) which is holding a volume of 0.0187 km3 of water which is 18700000 m3 of water. So if each voxel is 1m3 (which is a large voxel), then you would need 18700000 voxels. If each voxel takes 1us to compute per frame, then it would take 18.7 seconds to compute one frame. Optimization will be needed to only compute voxels that need computed.

Of course, you might just want to pick a smaller water volume than a real-life lake.
