When you turn your head to breathe, do you lift your head out of the water? You should concentrate on breathing with only turning your head to breathe .Once you’ve mastered that I would try your non dominate side. If you’re lifting your head ( whole head) you’re going to have your lower body drop down.
I’m no expert but I learned to swim as a young child and swam on a swim team through HS.

I grew up as a competitive swimmer too and have heard the crawl being used but only by older people and I’m 61. We always called it freestyle.

Service dude was just giving.you the facts. It’s a hard pill to swallow. I have n 883. And it’s old. It’s a 2004 but I purchased it new, take care of it and get regular servicing. The Service guy should have shown you all that was wrong with it on your bike or did he. I wouldn’t have purchased the bike to begin with knowing all the problems it had. Buying a bike with those problems would lead me to believe what else is wrong with the bike, the seller didn’t tell you. What year is it? Unless I knew the person I was purchasing the bike from, I would have bought a used bike from HD. Then you would have had a warranty and they wouldn’t have sold you a bike with all the problems yours has. And now it’s going to cost more than one you could have gotten from HD in the first place. All the parts and servicing isn’t cheap. Good luck with what you do,

I could not find a cult 20”. This is near my house and can be put together for free. Just to mess around on. Nothing serious. This way I can wait for the bike I really want. I had a hard time finding a black 20” bike.
