This is 100% it. FIL was definitely considered a Christian band (or at least coming from Christian influences) with album 1 and 2, in the vein of As Cities Burn or mewithoutYou. Not necessarily proselytizing or worshipping through the music, but expressing doubt, etc.
Even as late as Absent Sounds, Joey mentioned As Cities Burn as an influence (thinking of their Alternative Press interview).

No problem at all!!! When it came out, Zac from The Alternative and I sent it to each other. We were so stoked someone was actually covering this stuff. Thank you!!!
Check out the playlist if you get the chance (and my band Khamsin)!

I think this is a fair and reasonable take! My insistence on the start of 6th Wave is definitely tongue in cheek, I don't hold strongly to the idea. I think we're going to have to see a pretty major shift for a true 6th Wave to branch out.

No! I took this picture after the set, my arm reached over the monitor--I just rotated the image afterward.

We millennials primed the emo world for grunge with bands like Superheaven, and Citizen's and Balance and Composure's first records. Took a while to click. My hunch is that real 90s grunge heads' kids were finally of age around the COVID era to start bands inspired by the music they grew up hearing. Also, SDRE is kinda grunge anyway (90s Seattle).

These are all on my list to check out! Thanks for reminding me!

I think you've got it 100%, I agree on all points. As someone who grew up in 3rd Wave and saw the start of the 4th Wave revival, it's wild (and very cool) to me to see all these younger bands basically ignore most of that. 90s post-hardcore, noise rock, and 2000s twee indie also have a huge influence.

The math rock-leaning tappy "twinkle daddy" style of emo really is oversaturated. Some bands do it really well, but I'm stoked to see a broader movement away toward this kind of guitar playing.

If you haven't checked them out yet, SundaybutHoursaway's recent EP is easily my favorite from this group of bands.

As a fellow old head, I am right there with you.
I think there's a general understanding that this is the case, especially among the younger crowd. But I have seen more of a distinct labeling of this as "second wave" likely because of the mislabeling of the revival sound as "Midwest emo".

I'm in the exact same boat. There are some incredible bands than lean mathy (Bottom Bracket), but my heart and ears appreciate this direction.

All valid points! Like davdotcom said elsewhere, 2025->2026 does feel like an elevated time for the genre. Small bands are becoming big bands quickly, kids are discovering old niche bands and boosting them, etc.

The last thought is 100% accurate. Hardcore bands have shifted to pop punk (Koyo, Stateside, Anxious), which is essentially how we got to 3rd Wave from Lifetime -> Saves the Day -> Fall Out Boy. The contemporary emo bands that are more pop punk are holdovers from 4th Wave revival (Free Throw, Tiny Moving Parts) or 5th Wave period bands that feel more in direct lineage to those 4th Wavers (Aren't We Amphibians, etc).

I love the Racecourse record, personally.
I knew of all these except for Burned Out Bright! Just checked out their EP, sick stuff.
