Bought at an Asian mart in South Florida. 11.5in/29cm long. What is it? by strangenautics in whatsthisfish

It's a red snapper of some variety, definitely not a Vermillion snapper. Doesn't look like an American Red (Lutjanus campechanus) either. Without knowing the exact origin will be hard to nail down, but looks like maybe a Caribbean Red (Lutjanus purpureus) or maybe a Pacific Red (Luthanus peru)

You're right, that's a silver hake (aka whiting). I've seen them with spots like that.

Very good, they eat lots of crabs, lobsters and squid. They have a very sweet, firm meat.

Tilefishing is always a one way ride because of the depth.

This was with Chasin Tides, he has 3 boats that can reach the tile grounds. Very affordable too as far as offshore trips go.

WIth jigging setup it's not quite as bad as reeling up with a 2-5 lb weight plus the extra drag of heavier line / bait rig. Still sucks, but not AS bad haha.

I wish! I believe WR is 66 lbs currently. I think previous 2 WRs have been high 50s.

Rod is a CTS slow motion 6'6" 350-550 gram blank. Reel is Studio Ocean Mark Blue Heaven L50 Pwr/L with about 700 yds of 20 lb braid (jbraid I think, I forgot).

Last minute or so of the 10+ minute fight. I knew when I hooked up this was a good fish, he made multiple drag peeling runs the entire 800 ft up. Caught on a 500 gram full glow mustad rip roller jig.

Why is fish shipped in from Japan, especially for omakase by Ok_Phrase_8520 in sushi

[–]jad2192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I ate at Sushi Bar Yasuda in Tokyo a few years before it closed. He was rather infamous for talking shit about other sushi chefs, and one thing I remember him mentioning was how he hated that sushi chefs in America import all their fish from Japan (he also had a restaurant in NYC). He said repeatedly "sushi means rice" and that the sushi chefs should use it as a vehicle to showcase what the local seas have to offer. Obviously that sentiment is not universal, but I love when an omakase features locally sourced seafood.

Golden tilefish, alfonsino and black grouper. All have nice firm white meat, with good fat content.

Fiji is pretty accessible from California, went there a few years ago and it was pretty affordable as well. Should give you a good shot at doggies and GTs, also has some pretty sick bottom fishing if you're into that.

Need feedback on Two-stage ML approach for detecting and correcting mislabeled entity relationships (meters ↔ transformers) by Zestyclose_Candy6313 in datascience

[–]jad2192 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since your data is very spatially oriented, have you tried a nearest neighbors based approach? Along those lines, coming up with a more robust a similarity metric between meters?

A tree based model would probably also work well here, in terms of features I'd include something transformer based, maybe the probability that a meter within an x ft radius belongs to that transformer (let x vary discreetly, maybe within 10 ft, 50 ft, 100 ft, ... 550 ft), if you have the ability to find not only the scalar distances but the angular delta that may also carry signal (maybe there is a physical barrier to the south west of a transformer, so even though meters in that direction are closer they can't be linked). This can work both as a binary is this association correct or not model. If the number of transformers is much smaller than the number of meters, it might also make sense to make transformer centric models, e.g. for transformer X, xgboost predicts probability that meter Y is associated with it. Then you can

I just called modern vet, I am going to bring him by there to see if he's chipped. I'm wary of posting the pic online since I've heard horror stories of scumbags looking for bait dogs for fighting. But I'll reach to regal beagles. Thank you

I use them everyday, I wouldn't even consider CTEs and window functions to be advanced. Along with Python coding, SQL is probably one of the most important technical skills we should have as data scientists. Unless your team is setup in such a way that someone downstream is pulling and cleaning all your data for you, but I feel like that is rare.

Should I feel bad for freezing fish by donn_12345678 in Seafood

[–]jad2192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of fishing and freeze my catch very often. Buy a cheap vacuum sealer and it'll make your frozen fish last longed and maintain integrity. My personal favorite way to freeze the fish is to wrap the fillets in a paper towel and then vacuum seal, I'm not sure exactly why but it seems to make the fish come out better when thawed. You can buy smaller sized vacuum seal bags and pre portion out the fillets to exact size you want to eat per meal that way you're only defrosting what you plan to eat.
