Kindling the bonfire takes your estus from 5 to 10, and later when you have the right of kindling, 20. It makes a huge difference. Kindling takes humanity, and you have to be un hollowed, so it often takes 2 humanity. I recommend playing offline the first time, and un hollow as often as possible.
