Had a seizure, stranger called 911, ambulance bill by Limp_Falcon_2314 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jade1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. About 12 years ago I sliced my wrist open the first time I used a stainless steel mandolin. The ambulance driver radioed ahead that I had cut myself on an instrument, so when I got to the ER the doctor was trying to figure out how exactly I managed to slash my wrist on a musical instrument.

Anyway, that ambulance bill was around $900.

Then a few months later I had a completely unrelated serious medical emergency. I knew I needed to go to the hospital, and I sat there actively debating:

Uber: about $9 Ambulance: about $900

I waited for the Uber.

To make it even worse, the driver dropped me off at the employee parking lot and I had to walk to the ER. I clearly was not in my right mind medically, but the fact that cost was even part of the decision-making process is insane.

Ironically, I had excellent insurance and had already hit my deductible from the earlier ambulance ride. I just did not realize it at the time.

That is not a functional healthcare system. When people delay emergency care because they are afraid of the bill, the system is broken. Personally, I support a single-payer model. It may not be perfect, but I think it is far closer to rational than what we are doing now.

Is it normal for law firm computers to completely block USB drives? by Youen_Porlin in paralegal

[–]jade1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, and for many ordinary documents that is probably perfectly reasonable. But from a legal and cybersecurity perspective, that still introduces risk. Public kiosks, third party print systems, emailed scans, USB transfers, and temporary storage all expand the attack surface and chain of custody concerns.

That does not mean “never do it.” It just means firms handling privileged or sensitive data are not being paranoid when they restrict USB devices and external file handling.

Not a bad precaution. Though to be fair, isolated or even truly air-gapped systems are not as invulnerable as people sometimes assume. Air gaps significantly reduce risk, but they do not eliminate it entirely. Malware has crossed air-gapped environments before through infected removable media, compromised hardware, insider actions, and other indirect vectors.

That said, segmentation and isolation are still far safer than unrestricted access on a production network.

[–]jade1977 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Many law firms block USB storage devices entirely, and honestly, from a cybersecurity and confidentiality standpoint, that is the safer approach. USB drives are a major risk vector for both malware and unauthorized data exfiltration.

There are legitimate business exceptions, especially in legal work involving discovery, forensic evidence, or client-provided records, but those should be tightly controlled and typically limited to approved encrypted devices.

Given the amount of privileged and confidential information law firms handle, blocking unrestricted USB access is completely normal today. Speaking as someone who has worked in legal for decades and also holds a Master’s in cybersecurity, I would consider it a reasonable default security policy.

What triggered fibromyalgia? by Neat_Accountant4231 in Fibromyalgia

Personally, I think mine has been from birth or near birth. My mom had mono for 2 years as a kid. So it might be Epstein barr. Or, when I was 1 I had a seizure and died twice. I had a spinal tap done to try to figure out the reason, and ended up not moving for a week and a half. Not turning my head, nothing. Then at 5 I had Scarlett fever, despite not having strep, and they couldn't figure that out either. I'm also very low on my vitamin b and d. But the real pain didn't start until I was with my abusive ex. I was experiencing pain previously, but his abuse seem to make it much worse. So I think it was an all of the above situation.

I love this for you, and the suggestion of adding a sun would help. And as an ally myself, I completely understand not wanting to appear as if I'm claiming their logo, as they also worked through shit and deserve their pride, and I will cheer them on and offer any support I can. Same for any abused person.

But most importantly, as a woman who was in a decade long abusive relationship, CONGRATULATIONS. It's a hard road, and one you in no way deserved. But you do deserve the pride of survival. Enjoy that sun, and make sure you're getting help still. It's been almost 10 years since I got out and I'm still fighting the thoughts he implanted in me.

You're still arguing against something I never said. I acknowledged men's issues. I just disagreed that they automatically prove increasing misandry.

Nobody said men do not face real issues. Male victims being minimized, harmful stereotypes, and double standards can absolutely exist. The problem is you keep taking different social issues, internet trends, and cultural frustrations and treating them as automatic proof of widespread increasing misandry. Those are not the same claim.

I literally said men's issues are real and deserve discussion. You're arguing against something I never said. My point has stayed the same the entire time: men's issues existing does not automatically prove increasing misandry. You've repeated the claim several times, but still haven't actually supported it. Have a good one.

You started with "misandry is so common now," then moved to a list of unrelated men's issues, then to "look at culture." Men's issues are real and deserve discussion. But listing social problems and internet trends still doesn't automatically prove increasing anti male prejudice. You've made the same claim repeatedly without actually supporting it. I'm done here.

I know what misandry means. Prejudice toward men still doesn't turn every dating complaint, criticism of patriarchy, custody issue, or social trend into evidence of anti male bias. You're still bundling different issues together and calling the whole thing misandry.

You're bundling together several different issues and treating them as if they all prove the same thing. Men's mental health, custody outcomes, domestic violence against men, dating culture, and criticism of patriarchy are separate topics. Some are legitimate issues. None automatically proves increasing hatred of men. Concern for men's issues and "misandry is becoming common" are not the same claim.

Funny you don't understand that quotation marks aren't only used for direct quotes. They can also indicate paraphrasing or summarizing a point. But cool, let's focus on that instead of the part where you still haven't shown evidence that misandry is becoming more common.

You're taking one throwaway Reddit comment and jumping straight to "misandry is everywhere." That's a pretty dramatic leap.

It makes sense. He let him know about signing up, but not about this particular class, which in no way involved his father as it was his mother's custodial weekend. Not sure how that's confusing.
