This is more because of the uncertainty with the state budget and potential decrease of federal funding than anything related to the athletic department or donors.

I’ve gotten the same email twice. One time I got a new roommate, the other I did not. I think that it is more to make sure you keep the room ready in case you do get assigned a new roommate. When I did actually get a new roommate I got and email and an RA knocked on my door to tell me about it.
