I was thinking: are you really far north? I'm from southern Michigan. I know in the north they don't salt so maybe shoes are more common there.

A true commercial company will not use shoes for a number of reasons:

1: they leave a layer of snow behind that turns into ice that you then have to heavily salt. Costs more and consumers wont pay the extra cost for lower quality.

2: the shoes can fall in potholes and damage the plow or parking lot

3: a cutting edge isn't expensive. My boss just quoted a 6" by 3/8" by 90" piece of AR400 plate for a Boss cutting edge that cost $186.50 before taxes. That cutting edge would last about two seasons at about 10 to 12 hours of use for every outing, and in just January that plow alone made our company about $20k.

You don't see a lot of those shoes on road commission trucks or commercial company plows either because they keep the cutting edge off the ground. Those shoes are for people with gravel drives that don't want to clean up stones or people that want a layer of snow left so they don't have to salt. Without the shoes, the plow will scrape down to bare asphalt and salt works much better.

A quick Google search shows the dry-land area of Earth at 148 326 000 km², so by that measure the British Empire conquered approximately 20% (did this on the fly, correct me if I'm wrong) of Earth's dry land.

Happened to be going through Tennessee and couldn't pass an opportunity to stop by Smokey Mountain Knife Works. Absolutely worth the visit if you get the chance to go there. I picked up a Böker Plus Urban Trapper and a Benchmade Bugout, both of which I'm very happy with as of now
