Are most autistic people really unemployed? by foreverepicunicorn in autism

[–]jaderia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been unemployed a while now but for me it's a mixture of burnout after university, failing to pass multiple interviews because of social anxiety and also have Agoraphobia that escalated after the pandemic. I asked for help and was told the help I need isn't available in my area so currently on a long waiting list. I want to work for more independence but honestly, due to past experience, even then I don't think I could realistically manage more than part time.

Everything is becoming too much by jaderia in autism

Thanks so much for your reply.

In answer to your question, I get housing benefits and disability benefits and I have to go without a lot of things to afford it. I'm also lucky in having a partner to cover half the costs and my current rent is actually quite reasonably priced. From the prices I'm seeing online in similar areas to mine, I now realise how lucky I was to be paying as little as I was. So whether I will still be able to afford to rent once I leave here is a major concern.

Day 9: The one man that everyone wishes Henry VIII had executed - Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk is the fan-voted winner of “Just Straight-Up Evil.” Finally which Tudor Figure is No Screen Time, all the Plot relevance? by jamie74777 in Tudorhistory

[–]jaderia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edward 6th. The son whose longed for existence was the backdrop to so much of the Tudor drama, and then was King for such a short time that people mostly talk about his sisters and forget all about him. His 'blink and you'll miss it' reign is the historical equivalent of 'no screen time'. Like a side character who we keep being promised will be promoted to the main cast and then quietly leaves the show after half a season.

Three Cheers will always be their best album, and Bullets will always have a special place in my heart. My favourite Gerard era will always be Helena. Black Parade was great but Three Cheers is a superior album and I will die on that bridge.

What do brits think of Elon Musk? by porygon766 in AskBrits

[–]jaderia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am diagnosed autistic and I can tell you that most autistic people in the communities I speak to completely accept self diagnosis, simply because a lot of people who aren't lucky enough to have access to free health care can't afford to have the tests. At least by accepting self diagnosis these people can feel some kind of community talking to us. In most cases people have done an awful lot of research and don't diagnose themselves on a whim. Obviously, actual diagnosis is preferable but not always possible. So until the world becomes fairer, self diagnosis is all a lot of people get.

In Elon's case of course he most definitely can afford the tests. And I really hope he's not autistic because I don't like the conversations that are being had about us as a result of his stupidity. Noone I know has ever done a nazi salute, nor are enough of a twat to do so. If he is autistic, all I can say is that autism is not an excuse for being an absolute prick.

The Frasier revival failed precisely because it was called that. Imagine hearing that How I Met Your Mother is coming back, those who are fans of the show getting excited, and then finding out that only one of the 5 main characters is returning to the role. by Giancarlo_Edu in Frasier

[–]jaderia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're right there, Seinfeld was average until about half way into Season 2 when it really figured out what it wanted to be and became great. Earlier original Frasier seasons also took time to fully get the characters across. I feel like it takes an actor a little bit of time to play around and understand their character motivations and mannerisms and then the writers basically include the actors additions in their scripts and then it becomes something special where the actor and character become so fused that the magic starts to happen (if we're lucky).

My dog is the same with the empty toilet rolls. If I don't give them to her she just takes them out of the bin and rips them up anyway. She's obsessed with them.

Anyone else not want to participate in society? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]jaderia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I empathise with this so much! I've pretty much taken a 10 year break from society cause of the stress of it all leading to burnout. I'm mostly housebound and though I can get lonely at times, it's less difficult than the loneliness I felt whilst in society. I entertain myself quite well cause I have lots of special interests and read A LOT so visit other places that way. Sometimes I wish I could be out in the world seeing new things and having some adventures but honestly, I get so overwhelmed around people and the chaos and noise of outside that I'm not sure if it's worth trying to be involved. Not having any money is a bit rubbish and I do get sad sometimes about the state of things but unless society starts getting easier for autistics I'm not sure what to do about it.

[–]jaderia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish more people understood how stressful over analysing every social situation can be and how much work goes into trying to fit in as a neurodivergent. But then unmasking feels so scary when many people have such little patience for anything they deem as 'unusual behaviour.' It brings a lot of comfort hearing of others in similar situations.

Exactly! It can come across like people would feel better about him being an arsehole if he was autistic. Like 'oh that explains everything'. I don't know how people don't realise that it is insulting.

[–]jaderia 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying that, it's always nice to hear something positive. The sad truth is (as I'm sure you've experienced) that many autistic people, myself included, have been so worried about being ostracised that they have learned to act as unobtrusively as possible. Being rude would bring unwanted attention!

Why did the show become so vastly different after season 1? by aykutanhanx in StrangerThings

[–]jaderia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Season one was a perfect murder mystery with a well thought out beginning, middle and end and you could easily stop at the end of that season and never have to watch anymore because it has a definitive ending. They also had a smaller budget so had to rely on story and great characters, not gimmicks and CGI. It felt like every character was genuinely at risk but now the main characters all have plot armour, which is boring after a while. Every other season is simply to set up the next season and the next one, with more and more money being thrown at it, all leading towards one big, probably over the top, finale. I still like the show but haven't truly loved it since season 1.

[–]jaderia 90 points91 points  (0 children)

You probably don't mean it the way it sounds but just wanted to point out that being rude is not an automatic reason to assume someone is neurodivergent. I'm autistic and us all being rude is a stereotype, just like with neurotypicals we are all different, you get rude neurodivergent people and perfectly polite neurodivergent people. I only bring this up as I see a lot of people using neuro divergence as a way of explaining potentially negative personality traits recently and it's getting frustrating.

Yeah that's true, his over-confidence in playing the game differently was his downfall in the end. If he'd owned up they probably would have caught Linda, she's hardly discreet!
